Logo Dumps all gay programming

Another cable channel abandoning their niche, this time its the Logo network.

I use to watch the channel for shows like Queer as Folk, Noah's Arc, Beautiful People and Sordid Lives etc. but the network got away from that a few years back.

Another victim of The Network Decay Curse (sorry I have to say it).

You hit the nail on the head.

They all think that by copying each other by getting away from their original programming mission they are going to gain viewers.

I wondered 25-30 years ago when Cable TV was growing did they think that every cable station would almost be the same (i.e. MTV ,USA ,TBS ,TNT ,etc)?.

Not exactly. They will continue to show the vapid, yet sometimes fun, 1 Girl 5 Gays, which originates from MTV Canada in Toronto. And Rupaul's drag series.

Frankly, their efforts at gay original programming were pretty darn awful (A-List, Setup Squad). And the bakers-dozen theatrical movies they ran endlessly were rather cringeworthy. Change is sometimes good.

The channel picked up the rights for Will & Grace which will air soon. Other than that their orignal programs have lacked alot. Only one that was decent to watch was Noah's Arc. Sad enough it only lasted 2 seasons. Most of Bravo's programs are gay friendly so no lost. Not to mention cable companies were very slow adding the channel to cable line ups. Not sure what MTV network Logo used to be before but where I live the cable company doesnt carry it.

Those will probably end up on CMT ;D

Given the large amount of homosexual oriented programming on many other networks, both broadcast and cable, I'm not sure there's any need for a specific channel geared toward homosexuals at this point. I also think the overall possible audience for such shows was too small to begin with. I'm sure they made money by having a fairly low overhead and living off whatever subscriber revenues they made, but there are just not enough homosexuals in the country to provide a large enough audience to make this work as a cable network. My hunch is that most homosexuals didn't know about the channel and many of them that did had no interest in watching the programming they offered. Most of the homosexuals I know have pretty average likes and dislikes when it comes to entertainment options. Assuming they want over-the-top homosexual programming is kind of patronizing and insulting if you ask me.

You can use the word gay..."homosexual" is kind of dated sounding in this context.

As for the need for a gay-oriented channel -- it's kind of hard to say, since I don't think anyone has ever really done a very good job of trying to program to a gay audience. And that includes Logo during most of it's existence.

It probably is a fairly tough audience to serve, though. Stereotypes aside, there probably really isn't any sort of "gay aesthetic" that can programmed to, because we're really a very diverse group. More so, perhaps, than other minority groups who at least tend to be exposed to some sort of common culture as they grow up (ie, Hispanics tend to grow up in households with other Hispanic family members, Asians in households with other Asians, but gay people typically come from heterosexual families).

Still, it would have been nice to see someone make a better attempt at it. In a way, Logo seemed to me to be to gay programming what SyFy has been to science fiction. And I don't mean that as a compliment to either channel.

The only cable network that stayed the same after 30 years is ESPN. I know HLN changed from doing all-news "You Give us 22 Minutes We give you the world Mantra" with Pictures TV to all-tabloids. CNN went from All-News to News/Talk. Family channel went from classic TV to Teen TV CW like.

And even then, have they changed or what? Even The Weather Channel and CNN were not immune to channel drift.

Is poker a sport?

Even ESPN is evolving. Now they are showing ESPN Films and other sports documentaries. It's not just sports and Sportscenter anymore.

Yawn....restaurants I've been going to for decades have changed. Grocery and department stores have changed. My cell phone provider has changed. Fashions have changed. And yet this group whines and complains when these businesses evolve over time. ::)

As an outsider reading the 'whine' posts it occurs to me the posters are not commenting so much about evolution of cable channels so much as they are about all the former niche channels becoming the same. Just more "general interest" type services selling virtually the same product.

Not sure what "whining" you're referring to, but my post about ESPN evolving was meant as a good thing. Their sports documentaries (especially the 30 for 30 series) have been very interesting. Let's face it, I would much rather watch a sports documentary than some Division II women's basketball game or some poker match which is what they could be showing otherwise.
