Lohan goes to jail coverage

The morphing of real news to entertainment is certainly evident with the "breaking news" coverage on the cable networks of Lindsey Lohan being sent to jail.

Years ago, when there were real newspeople in charge, I doubt this would have merited just a few short lines in a newscast. But since the entertainment folks have taken over news operations, this three-ring circus becomes a major news event.

Murrow, Cronkite and their peers must be turning in their respective graves.

How many networks aired live coverage of the Michael Jackson memorial last year? Just asking...

So are you comparing the death of Michael Jackson to the arrest of a spoiled druggie teen queen who made a few movies? ::)

To their credit the two hosts on Phoenix' channel 10 morning show both commented on the circus this type of 'news' has become. The real news segment of this show had no coverage of the 'event'. They showed a ten-second clip of Lohan running into the court building from her SUV and that was it.

As a former radio news reporter/anchor, it disgusts me to see the coverage Lohan has been getting, not only on cable TV, but the three over-the-air networks as well.

This story belongs on TMZ or Entertainment Tonight; not a news network because it isn't news IMHO.

The credibility of the anchors at Fox 10 far exceeds what goes out over their air. KSAZ-TV is a Fox O&O, and their morning show (unless that's changed in the last couple of months - I quit watching earlier this year) contains too much BS from American Idol and TMZ for me to bother with anymore.

I doubt if their anchors (or news anchors on any station) have much control over that. But until I see something different from them, I'll stick to KPHO CBS-5, which didn't mention this "story" at all, at least not between 6 and 6:30 this morning, for morning news.

News presenters or news reporters should not be commenting on news or information at all, as it distracts the audience from formulating their own personal thoughts without influence from the folks who are supposed to be storytellers, which reminds me of what Don Hewitt said in a TV interview: "Tell me a story".

To defense of the networks and the cable channels, this is news is what the people are interested in. There is obvious interest from the general public about this topic or else they wouldn't be reporting on it!

That's why there's claptrap programs like Entertainment Tonight and TMZ. This type of BS has no business on a local news program. Maybe it's valid on an LA station (since it's local news there), but nowhere else.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear......the Lohan 'story' was delivered by the two morning show hosts and not the news guy (Ron Hoon).

As the morning show is entertainment and not necessarily infotainment I thought they handled it correctly. The news segments at the top and bottom of the hour are usually straightforward news although there can be humorous segue's in or out.

I usually watch 10 for news updates in the AM, catch 5 at lunch (hi Marya!) and 15 at 5:30 (national news). I've found that to be the best mix of to-the-point stories which have a minimum of repeats.

Guess who's in charge of the morphing of "real news" into entertainment news. Nope. YOU. And everybody else who watches it. If nobody cared, there'd be no market for it. Stop watching it and it'll go away; well, at least it'll go away for you.

No, it seems to me that he was comparing the excessive coverage of the memorial service of Michael Jackson (not the coverage that his actual death (about two weeks earlier) received) to the excessive coverage of the Lindsay Lohan arrest.

"To defense of the networks and the cable channels, this is news is what the people are interested in. There is obvious interest from the general public about this topic or else they wouldn't be reporting on it!"

Ummmm.....nope. This "news" (note deliberate use of quotation marks) is reported because it is designed specifically to distract the listener from REAL news topics, like the economic problems, recent developments regarding the oil leak, political scandals, Iraq/Afghanistan/the Middle East in general etc. This way the media "machine" can help the government/corporations effectively silence public opinion regarding recent developments--you can't have a reaction without a catalyst. It's basic physics.

I mean, why else were all the fornographic web sites suddenly made accessible recently in China? Think about it.

The lowest point of all entertainment news began when CNN was following the hearse that Anna Nicole Smith's body was in driving to the airport. What did CNN expect to happen, Anna Nicole jump out of the hearse and say "I'm Alive, Alive!!"? ???

I couldn't believe it. I'm sitting in a restaurant and they have a TV on Fox News Channel. I think they have closed captioning although they may not have that day. And I saw that they were covering ... Lindsay Lohan going to jail!!!??? Seriously? And there were all these cameras.

She looked nice, I'll say that. Seems kind of pointless but then if there are going to be cameras ...

Consider the source. Fox Noise Channel is notorious for broadcasting meaningless drivel! I'd be worried if FNC *didn't* devote at least three hours a day to something like this.....
