This afternoon WRFF was playing, (and this is back to back), Social Distortion, Gin Blossoms, Radiohead, Rancid, Better than Ezra, Paramore, Papa Roach and Chevelle, when I checked out WYSP in-between the cuts, someone was talking about Cra**ing their pants. Is this radio; "LOL", I broke out in a roar, the people I was with were roaring with laughter, not at the genius of the show, but the stupidity of the bit. What station would you rather hear. We were all eating dinner, who wanted to hear that, LOL, honestly is this what makes radio. I know some of you will say just change the station, and you all are probably right, after all, its free America, I have just one serious question, is this good radio and is this what the suits think will bring in listeners, what type of human does this target, Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, Executives or White 18-30 (cant get a chick), Go Eagles, Slum Trash.....LOL...it made my day....

Right here buddy ;D. I very rarely was without a pair of headphones during the last year and a half, including during dinner. Yes, rock is great but we don't need overkill of it (and clearly this market is a great example of overkill). The talk was simply something not being done anywhere else. Do I like 104.5? Yeah, it replaced 94.1 on all my stuff as the #1 preset. Am I still gonna (try to) listen to Kidd Chris (between the same 6 Chili Peppers songs and AC/DC hits)? Yeah, because there isn't any talk station like that in town. WYSP filled a niche.

I hate being the only one that liked Free FM.

Actually driving home today I noticed YSP had a liner essentially making fun of 1045 and the some of the "rock" songs they play being too soft for rock radio...let the games begin...

I did not hear the new YSP liner, I guess they are laying off MMR for a change. I can understand them bashing MMR but no way with RFF, at least 1045 plays many new and "oh wow", older cuts that the other two wont touch...example: Paramore, Bravery, Muse, Flyleaf, Angels and Airwaves plus the older stuff, D-Mode, Pistols, Smiths, New Order, Smithereens, Flys, Screaming Trees and a host of others. IMHO MMR and YSP are so predictable the same tired Classic Rock U2/Everlast garbage. With SixxAM, Priest, AC/DC and many other older bands bringing new music to the table they still stick with the familiar tunes.

So far MMR is the only station that I have heard sixxAM played on. YSP may be playing it too, but I haven't been tempted to put them back on my preset yet. I can't give an informed opinion about Kidd Chris either because I don't listen to his show. From what I hear his was the only mildly successful program on the "Talk that Rocks" FREE FM format.

WRFF tends to be musically superior to WYSP in its current chicken rock state IMO. But there is a lot of improvement that can be done at Radio 104.5. They play tons of songs that I would NEVER play if I was programming an Alternative, songs that are way too soft for the format - we're talking songs that have all received airtime on B 101. Yes, I'm aware that many of them were hits, but eventually you have to move on. Hootie & The Blowfish and Meredith Brooks had hits on Alternative at one time - doesn't mean you should still play them. That was back when every artist needed a launching pad, and lots of soft pop/rock acts managed to break through on Alternative for that reason. Other examples of songs that Radio 104.5 should drop completely:

Seether / Amy Lee - Broken
Hoobastank - The Reason
Finger Eleven - One Thing
No Doubt - anything by them. Especially because Gwen's a cheesy pop star now.
The BoDeans - Closer To Free
Blues Traveler - Hook and Runaround

In addition, I think they would do well to lighten up a bit on the Hot AC crossover piffle (The Killers, Incubus, Coldplay, Green Day) and the teen pop crap that all the Top 40 stations have locked down (Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's, Panic! At The Disco). There's still a ton of new music out there that they could be playing but aren't, and this is another area in which they drastically need to improve. Despite all this, they are still by far the best thing Philly has right now, even if they won't make anyone forget DRE or even Y 100 at their peak.

I 100% agree. The other morning they had songs from Train (more than one song), New Radicals, Jack Johnson (they could cut a few spins) among others, and it left me scratching my head. There's tons of potential for RFF, but it definitely needs a few tweaks.
