And Rhode Island television does it again. All 3 are absolutely blowing coverage of the latest round of bombings in London. They just give it one 2-minute story from the network feed and then go to local news, preferablly the heat wave. Most know that I'm focused on improving WLNE, so if I were the ND there, I would make sure my coverage is the best anywhere. Kinda like the underdog comes out on top. I would stay on the story like 4 and 7 in Boston, through the remainder of the newscast, with local break-ins in programming. My coverage would be better than even Sky News.

Is Providence Local TV News Too "Local"? (Was: Re: London Attacks Coverage)

If I were a news director in Providence, I first would have expanded the Noon news to a full hour, and devote most of the hour to coverage of the London explosions, with a short segment around 12:50 to 12:56 to cover the rest of the news and weather.

Here in Boston, WBZ-4 expanded their noon news to an hour, and pre-empted "The Price Is Right" to (for the most part) simulcast Sky News coverage between 11 A.M. and 12 Noon, interspersed with local anchor commentary. I didn't get to watch WCVB-5 after 12:30, so I don't know if they expanded their Noon news to an hour. WHDH-7 normally broadcasts an hour of local news at Noon every weekday.

Perhaps this question needs to be asked: Is Providence local TV news too "local"?? By that, I ask if Providence TV stations habitually play-up local news stories and ignore or downplay major national and world news stories that might get plenty of attention on local TV newscasts in most other cities??

YES! Far too local at times.

Rhode Island stations are woefully inept at providing coverage of news that reaches beyond the Providence metro area.

They are most likely to cover a story such as the London bombings (if at all) beyond a passing mention or the briefest of network packages, only if they can find a local angle.

Other wise, its more car crashes and fires etc, which usually impact only those directly involved, not the public at large.
