This isn't the end of Free FM - it just started. These shows just weren't popular in SF. Takes some time and a lot of fine tuning when you first start a "new" format - kinda like tweaking the playlist. Give it some time. I still think they should give Kidd Chris from Philadelphia's Free FM, WYSP a chance for afternoons.

London not popular in SF?? He was the only reason I listened. I can't believe they would keep that GARBAGE Show John and Jeff, but get rid of LONDON!<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Radioape99 on 04/10/06 06:09 PM.</FONT></P>

This station seems to be a train wreck, from what I've read.

How long before Free-FM is out at 106.9FM???? Face it the format is a waste of a premium FM signal! He sure didn't last long! How long before CBS hires a new PD for the station? Too much talk in the city by the bay already! Its time for a new broom to sweep clean the mess that is 106.9! CHR-pop anyone??????

You know just maybe John London got rid of Free FM! Ken whats his name isn't so hot a GM/Program Director as he's cooked up to be! The proof is on-air at 106.9!

> Not much info available... various rumours floating...

The question is ... did he jump or was he pushed?

Please...You don't even know what you're talking about. Ken's not the PD. And they were hamstrung out of the gate with Adam Corolla....

I do think they've made mistakes, but a lot of the direction comes out of New York. But, one has to think London and Darrian were Ken's call.

I thought London was great, too. However, he has a big reputation for being quite difficult to manage. Some say he feeds off of the conflict and does worse when he actually gets along with management.

Saw some rumor in All Access about some guy coming to do mornings...

From allaccess.com

CBS Talk KIFR (106.9 FREE FM)/SAN FRANCISCO afternoon host JOHN LONDON was fired FRIDAY (4/7) along with producer DENNIS CRUZ.

CRUZ tells ALL ACCESS that the hammer was dropped after an on-air incident THURSDAY involving LONDON's reponse to comments by syndicated FREE FM host PENN JILLETTE. LONDON objected to JILLETTE's negative comments about MOTHER TERESA ("a bad, bad person") and parodied JILLETTE's free-speech stance by challenging JILLETTE's belief that words don't hurt people and people should be able to say what they want with an offer of cash for someone to kill JILLETTE. After someone in the studio asked about torture, LONDON said "come on now, that would be in bad taste." The show was replaced by a rerun FRIDAY and the show was terminated.

KIFR's only official response for ALL ACCESS to the story is the statement "JOHN LONDON is no longer with the station." On MONDAY, CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KTLK-A/LOS ANGELES weekender JOHNNY WENDELL was handling the afternoon slot on KIFR.

Oh, come on, Allison. You've been around the business long enough to know that formats (a) need shakedown time; (b) have lots of changes during shakedown; (c) never get cancelled less than a year after launch.<P ID="signature">______________

I said "formats", not individual air personalities.

That's Ol Ken Kohl, the merry old sole. The man who gave us the superb
KNEW. Sounds like Free is headed to syndication land. London and
Darian both had track records in SF, but the shows had no content.
I got tired of hearing that if you didn't like the station it
was to smart for you. Please! I guess the subtlty of Londons
"Phone Bitch" character requires an IQ in the 200's, Oh wait That .200 !

But as is always the case, Kohl has been promoted to VP of Newstalk for
SF by CBS for the great job he's done. No wonder Katie Couric got hired
to anchor the CBS evening news.

A cbs radio talk format in austin only lasted less than a year, 104.3 the coyote changed formats again when there night jock left. see anything here?<P ID="signature">______________

You certainly can't blame all of KNEW's problems on Kohl. That station, by the way, when he was actually allowed to spend money, moved up in the ratings. Ratings which have dropped since he left. Also, there were some who felt that Premier screwed the SF market when they wouldn't move Limbaugh over to KNEW.

You can't believe (or maybe you could) how much the political winds changed direction in that building. Not to mention Kohl was still spending half his time in Sacramento, supervising those stations (not his idea). Kohl is far from perfect, but KNEW's failure falls mainly on the revolving market manager door at that time. That company has so many VPs...and they all had/have different ideas.

As far as Free FM goes, it is stumbling, but I think it will eventually right itself. The idea behind it is solid. Execution has been something else. They should've gone with local talent in morning drive and syndicated the mid days. I liked London...Think he's kind of an ass, but he's a great radio talent.

I liked John London, Sure,he's a curmudgeon, but with lightning fast wit and razor sharp sarcasm, and funny as hell.

Problem w/ an all talk station, never a song to end a bit when it should.

Brad Kava's article:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/14311908.htm

some Podcasts available at:
http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podcasts/index.php?iid=8011

my 2 cents: station will fail at talk, will go pop-hits w/ a zany 'zoo' morning show, launching January 2007

Yes. I see this thread becoming convoluted simply because Allison started her wild speculation and others went off posting without even reading what I posted in response.

Austin is market #42 and does not relate directly to market #4 for terms of this comparison.
