The long running Passion 91.8 North London has reverted to NET ONLY status, plus they added a AAC stream, and their website is now very nice... Check it out.... http://www.passion918fm.com/ They now are just calling Passion4Music.com

Why can't we have more dance-formatted pirate stations in the US? Most of the pirate stations here have Carribean formats.

That is the worst idea. Lets put more of a negative outlook on dance stations. We are trying to create success stories so that radio companies will take a better look at this format, not make us look like a joke.

In the U.S it doesnt help the industry to have pirates.... They dont pay the roylalties, the airplay doesnt chart because it isnt documented. Its different in the UK where the labels supply the pirates and the pirates promote local clubs and raves..... In fact, T2 Heartbroken was first heard on UK pirate radio. What we need in the U.S is more Legal High Powered Flame Throwers in markets where Dance can work...... Also, more School stations dedicated to Dance, and legal LP FMs playing Dance instead of Religious relays...... The new Vibe 94.5 in Nevada is good, but I think they should target and advertise in their COL rather than pretending they are in Vegas, which is a good hour and a half from the TX.... Dance can work in small markets sometimes better than big cities,, Just like in Indiana, Dance works in Bloomington, but not so good in Indianapolis which is much much bigger. Luckily, more CHRs and Rhythmics are playing Dance these days....

I concur with Clubber and Dance Rev's thoughts and statements.
As for pirate radio in the US, most of their them should be shut down, and their owners should be donkey punched ;D

Is that Liquid Radio 97.7 your talking about,,,, they are only on the air for a few hours on weekends. Minneapolis has a Legal PART 15 called Energy 87.9, but it only gets out about a mile or less from his apartment, his focus is on the internet stream. Energy 98 used to be a pirate if im not mistaken.

Oh that is pure crap. Pirates don't place a negative image on any format. You know what's truly the most negative image of the dance music format? THE DANCE MUSIC FORMAT! You all don't get it at all. Dance is never going to appeal to the masses... Specially when what's being pushed in mainstream is annoying and sickly lyrics by female artists with high squeeky voices over a cookie cutter beat. It's like listening to a yippie little dog 80 times a day, it scares people away!

Instead of taking the approach trying to appeal to people like a CHR station, maybe an approach of appealing to dance music lovers would work better. Playing what Billboard says is hot is definetley not the way. All Billboard's function is a way for radio stations to talk to each other. "Hey this single is hot in New York!" "Really? I'll play it too! If it moves people in New York, then it will 100% move people here!" BLAH.

Back onto the pirate subject... I've had the privilage of hearing Energy 87.9, Liquid Radio and (now defunct) Beat Radio myself. Energy tends to lean mainstream but I noticed none of the annoying crap being pushed, and there are people listening. I've talked to the Energy guy and his claim, "I just play what moves me. Maybe it moves other people too". Liquid Radio tends to be "off the wall" and play a lot of classic rave type stuff. But what's interesting is they seem to have a following in the little burg they broadcast from. Beat Radio did a lot of house, but they were buzz on the streets of Minneapolis. All 3 stations promote. If you look at their sites, all 3 promote the music and local venues in one way or another.
