Long Distance Radio - AM 1430 up Route 95. 90.9 FM and WEEI

OK, travelling back from Maine I was around Byfield, 8 miles or so from the Massachusetts/NH border (Amesbury, Newburyport, etc. etc.) and AM 1430 was full of static, but you could hear the conversation up there.
That was a surprise.

The other surprise was that 850 AM, WEEI had a lot of static, about 50% what AM 1430 had, but you could
hear WBUR loud and crystal clear.

Just some observations on a bright, sunny day on the highway.

Don't forget, WBUR upgraded its power from about 7,000 watts to 12,000 watts at 305 meters AND
changed the North-to-northeast quadrant from about 75% of full power to 100%. BIG difference.

1430 is decent up the Turnpike to Dover. 1200 is decent all the way to Manchester but unlistenable near the coast. Note that it takes a decent car radio to get them. 1190 (WLIB NYC) has good skywave after dark and is often clear as a bell but is in and out this far north. 870 (portland) can barely be heard in Dover or Portsmouth. I hope that WKOX at 50kW will make it this far north. No doubt the Ocean is helping with reception.
