Long Distance Radio Log June 17, 2009

Location: Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador
Time: Approximately 9:30 AM NDT
Date: June 17, 2009

I noticed one far-off station on my Sony AM/FM Portable Cassette Player, and in very certain spots, came in pretty strong.

93.7 FM WPYA Chesapeake, VA (BOB FM) (Required a Google search to find out where it originated; distance between two locations is about 1,148 miles, or 1,848 km)

The songs I heard part of were Cruel Summer by Bananarama and My Sharona by The Knack.

That's incredible! Perhaps look out for ZBM-FM 89.1 Bermuda. I've heard ZBM here in Illinois, and many people have heard ZBM throughout the East Coast and Midwest.

That's a great catch. WPYA's big tower is south of Virginia Beach, VA and on the VA-NC border and few miles from the coast.

And the odd thing about this catch, incredible as it is, and probably the highlight of my DX'ing life, is that the CBC Radio 1 transmitter in nearby St. Andrew's is on the same frequency. I was pretty lucky to get what might be a one-shot.

Great catch!

was it via e skip or tropo? i'm guessing it's via tropo because i could get Hot 100.5 last night in NJ. did you get other Norfolk area stations?

Nope. Just that one.

1,148 miles is a bit long for tropo and just right for e-skip. It's rare even in the Gulf of Mexico to have 1000+ mile tropo. Today, I heard a moonlighting channel 6 audio on 87.7 suddenly boom in, so that must be a short e-skip since there are no analog channel 6's in the US within tropo range, and I also heard some country music on 92.1 but didn't get an ID. Maybe you experienced a short duration e-skip.

Aren't there still some stations on channel 6 running the "night light" on analog?
