Long Island PPM info

The PPM discussion has been very interesting. Apparently one of the more difficult challenges is to get enough people to use the devices. Some have argued that people in younger demos are less likely to use the device, skewing results, but Dr. Sniffin's comment that they are even less likely to keep a diary is probably dead on.

I would love to see which stations on LI have benefited vs. been hurt by PPM.

The issues are recruiting people for the panel, and then keeping them participating. A panel family can be on for 24 months, vs. 7 days for a diary keeper. The annual incentives are "less than what would require a 1099" per Arbitron.

Arbitron has two issues with the PPM panel: 1) can't get enough younger participants, particularly 18-34 and 25-34. 2) can't keep the panelists participating over the longer term.

In the diary, they simply overrecruited in the younger demos and among Spanish dominant Hispanics and the cells were always close to proportional and required minimal weighting (less than +/- 10% to achieve tabulated proportionality. The PPM efforts fall vastly short of the diary results in meeting quotas and proportionality.
