Long Island radio in 5-10 years

So yeah, I'm stealing the idea from the NYC board, but this should be interesting to ponder....some predictions on my end:

-92.1 will remain the way it is :)
-Ditto 92.9 WEHM
-Party 105 will keep flip-flopping from dance to hiphop to more dance again
-Either WRCN or The Bone will change formats...my guess is the Bone, because of TMO's tendency to change formats and the heritage WRCN calls.
-Morey will purchase 94.3, plant 'LIR on the signal, but then tweak the format constantly
-WBAB will remain unchanged
-B103 will remain oldies
-WALK will remain #1
-More and more translators will hit the airwaves

Anyone think country will reach LI in the next 5-10 years, perhaps out east?

What about WKJY? Do you think they will ever beat WALK FM?

I don't think so. WALK has twice the power than KJOY. Plus you can hear WALK all over the island.

Ditto. I'm not sure what the Nassau-only breakdown is though, because KJoy does have a better signal than WALK in much of Nassau County, especially heading west. But overall on the whole island, WALK is king. K-Joy fizzles out on most car radios by Western Suffolk County.

Doesn't Barnstable own Love 96.1? I'm surprised they haven't networked the two stations like WBAB has with WHFM, or how WLIR used to do on 98.5 and later 107.1...and combine the ratings. I'm sure the two stations could probably get a combined share up to the mid 3's, which would put it in contention for the top 10.

My prediction is in five years you won't recognize radio because of the strenght that alternative technolgies like satelites and I-PODS and in-car Internet streams will bring to play.

I also believe all (or almost all) FM stations will also have HD channels and thus, say, WLNG could have WLNG "A", WLNG "B", and WLNG "C".

This will lead to a splintering of the ad dollar even more, or at least a move to even greater cost cutting (I doubt any of the HD stations will have live jocks or staffs of their own, maybe they will be voicetracked though).

Personally I worry about the future of AM and FM radio, I'm not sure it has one.

I'm not the only one who worries about that, I was having this conversation with a MAJOR (Top 10) market cluster manager for one of the "big boys" just this past weekend and his view is even more pessimistic than mine.

Internet advertising is soaring (granted, from a low starting point) while radio is up onlu 1% this year in a pretty lively economy. Yes, the "less is more" initiative has something to do with that, but radio may have already killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. Are these new technologies the final nail in the coffin? Time will tell, but I, for one, right now, think that yes they are.

I think that a top 40 station will come to eastern Long Island

Would we still be "Digital Mono"? I told paul that if we owned a
TV station, it would be in stereo and the FM still in Mono.

Wasn't Beach Radio a top 40 station, and didn't it fail?

> Yes, many believe that satellite and internet webcasting will take over terrestial broadcasting. But if you think about it, how often do you depend on the local broadcasting stations to get you around traffic, update you on local news, etc?
My personal opinion is that the alternative, newly developed methods of program distribution such as those above will grab a sizeable chunk of the listening audience in the beginning, lowering the ratings of our locals, forcing the locals to "wake up" and, as most media outlets usually do, become copycats, offering similar programming...and altering their means of generating ad revenue (less spot load and clutter). As they begin to do this, the "pay to listen" outlets will see their subscribers start to drop off. The bottom line is that over the air broadcasting, with enhanced local information, keeping the listener informed along with music that will keep him loyal will bounce back as the dominent one...without the subscription fee!

For at home listeners, the audio disc, in whatever format that may be then, will provide the music and television will provide the local information.

I can get it out as far as Riverhead, but not on this side twoard the city, here in Nasaw county.
Eastern LI does not come in well at all here.
Is it the same out east where NYC does not come in well? Or is NYC non-directional and have killer signals, and/or antenneas on hills? <P ID="signature">______________

Well, NYC signals are non-directional...I don't know which hills you think NYC stations could possibly have their towers on, as there are no real hills in NYC or LI...most signals are from atop the Empire State Building, a few more from the Conde Nast building in Midtown Manhattan. Generally, NYC signals are good to mid-Suffolk county (depending on how strong adjacent signals from other LI/CT stations are), and by Riverhead, have completely fizzled out on most car radios.

I think WBLI makes it further east than Riverhead, I remember even getting them in Orient Point a few years back when I travelled out there. I don't know if that sort of reception is consistent out there though.

Eastern LI had its own CHR station, Beach Radio, a few years back, and can get WKSS and WKCI from Connecticut reasonably well (and they show up in the Riverhamptons book). And WBLI comes in as well, I'm pretty sure, so I don't really see the need for another Top 40 outlet.

In the latest Hamptons-Riverhead ratings, WBLI tied for 3rd overall, so the signal MUST be getting out there.

BLI's signal is solid in the Hamptons, but once youiu get past there its not that good. Most good car radios pick it up further, but does have issues when you get further east

They absolutely should combine KJoy and Love 961. I'm not sure where Love ranks on the charts, but KJoy and Love are so similar in the formats that they could get away with it. It's almost foolish not to...
