Long Island Radio....Just awful

I was back on LI this past week for a visit with Family. Grew up there, working in radio there left but was still a state away for many years until moving west. Thsi was the first trip back in sometime. All I can say is...ugh. Radio is so bad on LI, I am at a loss for words. Bland, Boring....lame jocks, horrible programming...just awful. Once a great market, now just sounds like some itty bitty backwater market in the middle of now where. Just terrible....my wife even commented while skipping thru the dial "this is terrible". Thank goodness for the Ipod....

Agreed. You can't blame WLIR's parent company for selling the 92.7 frequency (it was an offer that no one could refuse), but local radio suffers mightily with the absence of that legendary station. Probably the one station that isn't either redundant and/or completely stale is 94X. They play a pretty good mix of songs. They steer a little too much toward bubblegum pop from the late '90s/early '00s for my liking (more '80s would be nice), but at least it's something different from the dull soft rock, Top 40, and dinosaur rock playlists that plague the local airwaves.

WHLI is a great sounding station. They are live and local all day and combine standards and oldies. They have been doing the same format, with some modifications since 1978 when they were one of the charter stations for their Music Of Your Life format. Dean Anthony, a former WMCA Good Guy was the PD and Midday man for years and Jack Spector worked there as well.

This is not offered as a rationale, Actix, but Long Island radio cannot be singled out.

Radio is awful on any dial in any market. All it takes is a glance at the many Radio-Info forums. Just pick a market. It's that easy to read how awful radio is to some of us, from Mount Washington to Mount Polimar.

Where it once acted as a leader of sorts for young people, radio no longer does. And there are some who insist that the erosion of that younger listener base (the most notable fragmenting of the saleable demo spectrum) began several years before any new alternate gadgetry had been invented.

But no way is this modern mind-rot limited to Long Island. In order to hear anything interesting these days, a monitoring critic or ex-radio person is likely fated to travel to markets rated, say, #75 or lower. Even in many of those smaller marlets, though, the sameness is too pervasive and too entrenched to be corrected.

I enjoy listening to Party 105 as well. I listen a lot on the weekends and I enjoy the DJ Wildman Steve when he's on the air on the weekends. He's very pleasant, he has the voice that the ladies like, and he's funny. I really enjoy listening to him when he's on the air.

I have not been to Long Island in about four years, but two stations alone, in my opinion, invalidate your opinion. I like WBLI. It has some great jocks, including Al Levine (one of my favorites), and is far more live and local than most CHR stations today. In addition, how can anyone complain about WLNG? It is perhaps the last real "Oldies" station out there. It is live and local, and it has a sound that can be found no where else in the United States.

I haven't been ABLE to listen to wbli for the last few years because of the people they have on there. I'm not sure when the last time you heard Al Levin was, but he sounds corny and out of touch. As for the AM show, it is unlistenable. As someone who has worked in radio for more years than I'd like to admit, that's just my honest opinion.
