Long Live Paul Barsky

Paul Barsky and his on air antics and show ideas are an institution to the city of Philadelphia's radio listeners. Why else would people be clammering for him during his periods of being out-of-town. People in this radio market missed him when he fell from WCAU-FM's morning show, then we all missed him when Preston Elliot replaced him on Y100. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, you all know that all that WMMr's listeners were glad when Paul Barsky arrived on 93.3 WMMR's airwaves, but you all got sad when Barsky didn't renew his contract and WMMR had to keep the airwaves warm with that( P-word that sounds like Wussy) who was on with Vinnie the Crumb before The Phily Guys show went on the air. Everyone knows that Barsky was the best thing to ever happen to 96.5 no matter what format they may be, and Ben Maxwell or Rocco the Janitor, or whatever he calls himself now, will never be anything but a guy who got a morning gig all because of Paul BArksy. And now Philladelphia and Infinity can be happy that Our Man Paul Barksy is back on the air. Before we go there, Philadelphia needs to forgive Infinity for letting David Lee Roth have enough rope to hang himself and for not giving Paul Barsky the green light to Man the helm at Free Radio 94.1. Barsky is and will only ever be the one guy who can walk in and with the strength of his career, successfully take on and do damage to, The Preston and steve show. Perhaps Mel Karamzin or Les Moonves will let some one at 94.1 Free Radio make a good faith judgement and do our man, Paul Barsky justice by moving him into morning drive.
Does Infinity posess the ability to invest in a local morning show as opposed to mass producing and then syndicating a morning show?????
Barsky Is the Man...Let's hope that Infinity doesn't Phuck him up tooo bad.
Edited by Captain Happy on 10/30/05 06:20 AM.

Mel is the head of Sirius now.

By the way, I'm a huge Barsky fan and I am glad that Barsk' is back on the air in Philly.

well bob let's see...Barsky has been on-air for multiple stations spanning numerous years and have he's just been picked up by Infinity. Have you ever done anything compariable??

To be fair, no one was comparing Rob with Barsky. Barsky is a proven loser which is why he "has been on-air for multiple stations spanning numberous years."

I'm not judging anyone: If you enjoy Barsky, then his return is good for you. Enjoy! But ya can hardly blame us for being surprised that he's back yet again.

Barsky is like Ric Flair. Sure he has had some rough times. But still he's been on top of the world before he's run into those.

How any one can be a PROVEN LOSER... is beyond me. You're telling me that Barsky has NEVER done anything positive in his million years on the air in Philly? That would be an out right lie and all of you Barsky Bashers know it.

I like Barsky alot ..but we must remember......
This time he is doing middays and probably getting less money than a
drive time show. But only his agent knows for sure..

Middays could be tough to get ratings in a hot talk format as well..
As I recall Don and Mike had trouble..Leslie Gold in NYC had trouble.
Barsky, I would predict could do better than most based on his experience and name recogntion.
Unfortunatly many people are working during middays and listening to some AC station at work probably. I think Barsky would have a better chance at success on 7p -12 midnite really.

I was listening to him only for an hour or so for a few days..as I have to go to work at noon.
He mentioned he would not be doing phone scams which was disappointing.. but
I don't know if he had said no song parodies or other type comedy bits either.
He is known for his originality.. I just hope he will produce his own work
in the future..
His singing is fantastic..
Maybe he can go all Christmas along with B101 and Sunny and sing christmas song parodies..

LOL

I can't stand listening to him, but would agree the "proven loser" comment is far from "proven." His run at Y-100 was fairly long, and to be fair, Barksy is hardly the first, nor last, person to be pushed aside when new management gets the chance to put in one of their own pet projects.

Max and The Point don't prove anything, other than owners will throw the baby out with the bathwater in pursuit of that elusive "next big thing." He didn't have much time at either outlet to establish data one way or another.

If I'm to believe what I've read, he was offered a new contract for WMMR, and chose to take the chance at the brass ring--management--at 96.5 rather than renew at 93.3.

I don't know how well this all-talk thing is going to work, with Vinnie as the sidekick, but I suspect a large part of the success or failure is going to depend on David Lee Roth, and THAT is an even bigger unknown. If he tanks, I don't see that it matters how creative Barsky is....the whole concept goes down the drain.

And if he tanks, do you suppose he'll ever work in this town again?

I wrote that sentence poorly--apologies for that. I should have been more clear that I think if David Lee Roth tanks, the whole Free FM idea is down the drain.

But as to Barsky, if his show alone tanks, and the others do well (keeping in mind the mid-day numbers aren't apples-to-apples when compared to drive time), then no, I think he's done in Philadelpia. But, if Free Fm turns out to be a failure across the board, then it's an uncertain situation. I'd say the odds are against him working in Philly just based on the number of stations left, but it's not something you can rule out entirely.

I know there's a feelig on this board that Philly does too much "recycling," and to each their own opinion. Personally, I don't think it's an altogether bad thing (in all cases), because some of that recycling comes from caases of good people winding up in bad circumstances. For example, I'd welcome hearing Brian Murphy back again, even if it would be, what, station #4? Just because Mix croaked doesn't mean he wasn't a talented, entertaining personality.
