Long-Silent AM Stations in Florida

jovialjay wrote "The Blountstown stations used to look rather crappy, but they're now in a very attractive brick building. Business must be good in Blountstown."

Harry got that building free (or at least almost free)....some kind of agricultural grant that he was involved with and got some of the money for him....

A little bit of useless trivia about WQIK 1090 Jacksonville -

In the early 1970s, when Marshall Rowland decided to break into the Tampa area with WQYK, he purchased former Top-40 WALT 1110am, changing the callsign to WQYK. (WQYK later moved to 1010.)

In the early 1970s, Jacksonville's WQIK 1090 was regularly receivable in Tampa (although very weak). Back then, it was possible to slightly turn the tuning knob and receive either WQIK or WQYK, both right next to each other, and both sounding very much alike, with callsigns that sounded alike as well!

WQIK 1090 Jacksonville (10) (wasn't this 50,000w?)
(10) WQIK...but the 1090 did exist...cd
We remember hearing them when we attended UF in 72/73
Must have moved because they were a 50kw d**timer!

WQIK-AM once operated on 1090 with 50kw-DA-D before moving to AM 1050 and later AM 1320. The call letters on 1090 were WCMG (Country Music Greats) and was owned by Marshall Rowland. For some reason, Rowland downgraded the power from 50kw to 10kw just before moving to 1050 with 5kw. The 1090 frequency has been deleted while AM 1050 is now home to religious formatted WROS.

I'm not trying to be argumenative but merely trying to reactivate some long tired brain cells, didn't WCMG stand for country music gold? It seems like I remember Marshall Roland, Lamar Lynn, and maybe Frank Theiss use that moniker back then.
Something happened to the 50kw transmitter and soon after that the station went to 5kw on 1050.

WQIK transmitted on 1280 KHz daytime-only starting in the mid 1950s before moving to 1090 with 50 kw daytime in the mid 1960s. Moved to 1050 in the early 1970s with 5kw daytime. Call changed to WCMG.

WIVY operated on 1050 KHz before moving to 1280 in the early 1970s. Became WEXI in 1976 and eventually WSVE. The WSVE license was canceled and 1280 is now silent in Jacksonville.

Does anyone remember that when 'QYK was also on 99.1, they had a strong power supply hum AM'ing the FM transmitter?
With less than a full quieting signal or when slightly off tuned, a loud 60Hz hum was present.
This is reverse slope detecting, the opposite of off tuning an AM receiver to hear a frequency modulated signal.
When receiving a solid signal and tuned in properly, there was no hum; none at all.
I was using a dipole thirty feet up at UF/Gainesville.

The recent post, although I have no answer, had me reading this thread again, and sorry to say that I did not respond to a couple of posts.

@Mr Tillery: I posted in the Mexico or Latin America board about the 710/730 Mexico City deal (actually 690/710/730!). I wonder how a Coby radio would perform there.

@radiosanchez: the WAVS deal, I cannot recall when it left 1190 (I was in the military 1978-80---not sure if it was during that time), but I noticed a signal on 1170 in 1983 or so, and "WAVS" was announced. It was a standards-style station, even playing comedy.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether or not WINV 1560 is on the air?

Thanks.

WINV is an interesting station in an interesting situation. Over the past few years WINV has been broadcasting for very short intervals only to go off the air for an extended period. Programming wise WINV has been re-broadcasting sister FM station WXOF 96.3 when it is on the air. As far as I know WINV is currently off the air. I surmise The Gull Group is operating WINV with minimal broadcast requirements simply to preserve the license and for no other reason.

Shame it's wasted, just to keep the license...

If they are operating for "short intervals" and then going silent, the FCC is certainly NOT aware of it.

I have also heard that they want big $$$$ for WINV. Who would be foolish enough to pay six figures to rebuild a daytime AM? ???

I decided to drive by WINV the other day.

The place is totally trashed. You can even see the transmitter through a broken window... it appears to be totally stripped. There's no way that this place could meet any "minimal broadcast requirements"...that's laughable. I know that Clear Channel is famous for deferred maintenance and "slum" transmitter sites, but I never expected this from the Marcocci group. ???

HAHAHAHA glad to see I am not the only "curious george" around here! I too drove by awhile ago and it doesnt sound like the janitor came anytime since my visiit. What a mess.

The FCC has clarified what they would consider "minimum" broadcasting and exactly how that serves their COL. It is one of the new affirmations on the renewal application. OMG, their app claims they have been back on the air since Jan 16, 2008. "Licensee certifies that the station is currently on the air broadcasting programming intended to be received by the public." Stereolane, when you were sitting in their parking lot did you hear any signal on 1560?? I know I didnt.

Monday afternoon. And no, there's no signal on 1560.

"Derelict" is how I would describe the condition of the place, and that's being kind. It looks like it was a nice facility at one time.

Drove through Homosassa and Crystal River today and heard what appeared to be a scratchy carrier on 1560 with a little hum in the background. Listened on and off for about 20 minutes as I drove along US19 but heard no audio (or ID for that matter). Cant definatively say it was WINV.

QUOTE:

"OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS, STATION WINV HAS GONE OFF THE AIR INTERMITTENTLY. INSPECTION HAS REVEALED THAT THE ANTENNA SUPPORT HAS RUSTED THROUGH, AND THE ENTIRE COMPONENT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY IS REQUESTED WHILE THE LICENSEE GATHERS THE RESOURCES TO MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS."

It sure is nice to see that a licensee can simply lie, with impunity, to the FCC.

What about WKAO 1510 in Boynton Beach. This was a Beautiful Music daytimer in the70's.Mark Pritchird, who owned the station, then applied and moved the station to 1040 am 24 hrs..it became FOXY 1040

1510 must be spooked, for two stations to move :) just kidding...

I remember WKAO. Was WZZZ in the 1960s (top 40?) prior to that.....it was silent in between, early 70s.

1510 in Cocoa, WWBC, jumped from 750 watts to 50,000 watts a few years back. Also there's a 1500 CP for Palm Springs in Palm Beach County. Ergo, no more 1510 apps there....

Who in his or her right mind would buy an AM station today? Possibly if HD Radio would become popular. but it's going the same was as AM Stereo, IMHO.

As of this posting, in my market, Jacksonville, there are maybe 5 FMs in HD, and zero AMs in HD.

I'd love to but the damn commish won't open another filing window. I am more put off by the idea of an auction. Also, AM Stereo didn't interfere with adjacents like HD does. HD is pure garbage. Yes, I do have an HD radio.
