Long Time Poster - New Handle

Not sure what happened but the usual monthly exercise of signing in after getting an email code obviously didn't work for me so I had to re-register with a new handle and email. Old handle was b-turner

I'm Bill Turner. I've been earning a paycheck in radio since 1978. I ran a part 15 from 6th grade forward until my first paid gig. I was even a volunteer at KCHU in Dallas around 1976 (KCHU was 100,000 watts then before KCBI took the frequency and what was the remnant of KCHU became KNON).

I spent a decade on air and in programming before being put in sales. From sales I went on to a Houston AM station where I spent almost 26 years, most of those years managing the station. These days I'm working toward 5 years selling at KGAF in Gainesville, Texas.

I feel fortunate that I have enjoyed experiencing the on air side, sales side and managing side of radio. I have a perspective that encompasses all three 'sides' of radio. I'm not an expert but I have see a lot and experienced a great deal.

Likely the two best things ever said to me are: 1) a great radio station is a reflection of life in the community it serves and 2) Sales means going out and making friends and working for your friend's continued success.

Always enjoy your posts, Bill! Sorry that @DavidEduardo or one of the admins can't help you resurrect your original, long-time user name and account. Sad to lose all that history and all your postings under your original handle.

So good to have you back!

Thank you!

I'll share an incident when I was at KYND, an AM daytimer, in Houston. Our tower site and office was an interior acreage 1/4 mile off a rather busy 2 lane road without shoulders. Access was via a one lane driveway with a 6 foot chain link fence one car length in from the street. At the end of the 1/4 mile long driveway was another 6 foot high chain link fence. Both fences required a key to open.

I used to tell my staff to act like they owned the place and that I trusted them to make a decision when a question came up. I told them if it was wrong, chances are I'd likely make the wrong decision too and we'd both figure out what the right decision was. My staff was excellent and made me a successful manager (I'm only as good as my staff allows me to be).

We had 4 weekenders that were 1099ed each year. So we paid them in cash each week. We put an envelope for them in my desk they could grab. I had a weekender that wasn't working out. I suggested he find another job and let me know when he was ready to leave. I hated firing people. So, he told me when his last week would be and left. We didn't get the key back from him and frankly it never crossed my mind nor my owner's mind to ask for the key. He came back the next Friday night and since we were a daytimer, let himself in and stole all the envelopes. We changed the locks the next week. We can't prove it was him but he was the only one with a key (and we never had such issues with any other employees).

One of my employees was an exceptional 17 year old girl that worked Sunday mornings. We had forgotten to get a key to this high schooler. At 6:30am she scales the fences and grabs the spare door key out of the electrical box, goes in and gets us on the air on time. Not wanting to wake us up, she waits until 9am to call my owner and myself. You see, we had live programs starting at 11 am so the gates needed to be unlocked. We race down to the station finding her sitting in her car at the street. She had scaled those fences twice because she didn't want us to be parked on the road until she could get to her car to move it. Talk about dedication above and beyond! She was very understanding and my owner slipped her a bonus for that!

If he had asked...

What exactly didn't work?
It seems likely I had the same problem Bill did. The 6 digit confirmation code email never arrived despite several attempts over the course of a couple weeks. I, of course, checked the spam bins in Gmail each time.

I failed to receive a confirmation email for the new account as well. But I control that domain, so I have some information I can share to help diagnose this problem, if the admins can let me know how best to send it (PDF). Some of the info is personally identifying, so I do not wish to post it publicly.
