Long time Wilmington Radio Personality Roger Holmes Passes

Announced today in an e-mail blast from WVUD station anager Steve Kramark (Details likely to be in Tuesday's News Journal):

Long time ‘In A Mist’ host Roger Holmes passed away over the weekend. There are no funeral details yet, but please contact me if you would like additional information.

Roger retired from WVUD last March, and while we are saddened by his loss, we are glad that he was able to end his WVUD career on his own terms. Over 60 years in the DJ booth for Roger….quite an achievement.

I remember listening to "Roger in the Record Room" on 1380 WAMS when I was in junior or senior high.

Roger was a wonderful man and a kind gentleman. I was a kid of 13 when he allowed me to sit in with him on a Saturday morning in December 1963 at WAMS. I was there with Roger for four hours, along with the late Tom Castona (newsman) ... the visit cemented my goal of getting into the broadcasting business. It took me about 3 and a half years to do it eventually getting a job at WILM in 1967. BTW, Roger's theme song for the TOP 30 show on Saturday mornings was "Boogie Blues" from the old Bobby Vinton (yes, THE Bobby Vinton) album, "Dancing At The Hop". As a result I ordered a copy of the LP, thru my mom, at a record store in Wilmington (I forget which one). Years later (about 2005 to be exact) I had Bobby Vinton on my radio show at WKII in Port Charlotte FL, and I told him about buying that LP. He was shocked as the sales of that LP were poor. He said he had never met a non-relative who had bought the LP. Roger ... thanks for all of the wonderful memories. Since my career is now over that is all I have.

BTW ... when I was visiting Roger at WAMS that Saturday morning he asked me to listen to a new single he had received, and to give him my opinion of it. I did, I flipped ... he said he agreed and thought it would be a big hit and that WAMS was going to jump on it. The single ??? "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (Capitol Records). I forget the name of the artist group ! :D

I worked with Roger on a few club dates many moons ago; I found him to be a class act, all the way around. Sincere condolences to his friends and family.
