Not only was it a #1, but it interrupted the two-month run of "Bette Davis Eyes" at #1, so it was not a fluke hit. FRR is either pulling our collective legs, or he slept through 1981, or was born after 1981 or at least not old enough to remember Stars on 45. It appears that they were bigger in Europe (and apparently still are) than they were here.

FRR likes intros. Maybe he will like Stars on 45's take on these intros. This mix includes a few that are not on my Stars on Long Play II album:

Actually, Stars on 45 were a Dutch studio band that had more than one record.  They took lots of songs with similar themes or artists and made medleys of them.  If I am not mistaken one of their members (founder?) was a member of Golden Earring.

Roger That......Jaap was a member of Golden Earring...........I have a copy of the original bootleg 12" disc Lets do it in the 80's....which was the basis for stars on....as was the case with "Swing the Mood" was an underground DJ bootleg by Frankie Knuckles, as a 50's beat mix.

Hey, Hornet, was "Venus" a part of that bootleg medley? It was my understanding that he put together the Stars medley in large part because he was losing out on royalties from "Venus." By the way, I'd love to hear the bootleg medley if you know where I can find it. Thanks.

This is a great site. Thanks for the info! I LOVE that clip....No I was alive in 81 and can tell you, no station played the Stars on 45 where I lived. I think Bobonthejob could verify that fact. I think Radioman still gets the prize...Happy New Year folks

The Jan & Dean song, "The Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review and Timing Association" was half of a double-sided hit. I want to say the other side was, "Ride the Wild Surf" but I'm not sure. Neil Diamond's "Be" peaked at #34 in 1973 but did much better on the AC chart. I guess "One" by Three Dog Night doesn't count because it isn't titled "1".

Actually Jaap produced the medley at the behest of Willen Van Kooten, who owned the copyright of Venus. Kooten heard the bootleg medley(which included Venus) and decided to release a legit medley which included Venus. the amazing part is that Jaap found three Dutch musicians to mimick the Beatles:Bas Meyers as John Lennon, Oakkie Huysdens as Paul, and Hans Vermuelen as George. 99.9% of the listening audience believes that "stars on 45" are original beatles clips spliced together, thats how convincing those musicians are. Adding to the confusion other DJ's started mixing Actual Beatle Clips into medleys after that and the Jaap phenom was never explained as to the quality of the dutch musicians. My 12" discs are buried in storage I will look for them, and try to copy that bootleg , send me a personal message on this site with your e-mail and I'll send you a copy. Some other notable medleys spawned after stars on 45...Capitol released two Beach Boys Medley ,the upbeat hits and a Ballad Medley, mercury rteleased a Platters Medley, Fantasy a CCR Medly, There were two different James Brown Medleys that were superior to all other medleys. There were two most excellent Four Season medleys by "Season Of Gold" and "Gidea Park" . The DJ Pools went crazy and produced over 50 or so different medleys of different genres , Punk Medleys , classic Rock medleys by decade medleys ,and so forth..... some great stuff out there.
 
Thanks, Hornet, I will message you in the next day or two. Meanwhile, you are such a treasure trove of information! Were there ever any lawsuits over the bootlegged medley? There would have been, had this been here in the states! And I can't recall ever hearing a medley of Beach Boys ballads, only the one that started with "Good Vibrations." With those other medleys, I have tried to determine if the titles of the individual songs in the medleys were included as part of the overall medley title. If so, we might have one longer than "Stars," provided that it was a hit. I believe "Jeremiah Peabody..." et al holds the record for the longest individual title (which is apparently what FRR was looking for), but many medleys have titles longer than that by including the individual titles of the songs included in the medley as part of the overall medley title. I suppose you could say that listing the individual song titles in a medley is a technicality that makes the medley's title longer than it otherwise would have been, but then again I suppose that there is a legal reason for that requirement.

Flip was "From All Over The World"....The theme from the T.A.M.I. show (live concert which was filmed and released as a movie). I used to have the 45 (and actually may still have it somewhere). IIRC, both sides cracked the Billboard top 40, but neither was a particularly big hit. "Anaheim" was probably the better tune, but was basically a rewrite of "Little Old Lady from Pasadena. Same premise....Old ladies with fast cars.

But this was not a rock and roll song.
