Longest Running Radio Program

The program first aired in 1950 and is still on the air today, being heard on 1550 radio stations world wide. It is still produced as it was back in 1950 with live music, a sound effects person doing the sound effect live, and the actors acting their parts live as it is recorded. It is a 1/2 hour radio drama called "Unshackled". It is based on true life stories of people from around the country who became unshackled when they turned their lives over to Jesus Christ.

The studios are located at the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, Ill. Their web site has plenty of photos of the actors, sound effects, and the studio from way back when and today's very modern studio. There is a radio log also that will tell you anywhere in the world the program can be heard, which by the way is now translated into, I believe, 7 languages besides the original English. Whether or not you are into religious programming, that's quite a feat. 55 continuous years of broadcasting. One person, I believe is still there from the original crew/cast.

The web site is www.unshackled.org Locally in and around the Philly/Trenton/Wilmington area it can be heard on:

Camden WTMR - 800AM M-F 2am
Trenton WCHR - 1040 Sun 10:30pm Sat 4am, 11pm.
Lancaster WDAC - 94.5 Sun 6pm
Philly WPHE 690 Sat/Sun 5pm
Baltimore WRBS - 95.1 M-F 2am
Elkton, MD WOEL- 89.9 M-F 3pm/8pm, Sat/Sun 3pm/5:30pm

Interesting. It beats Don McNeill's long running show 1933-1968.

Opry is Longest Running Radio Program

As far as I know, the longest running live radio show is the 'Grand Ole Opry', which has been on WSM in Nashville continuously since 1925, preparing to celebrate it's 80th birthday this Fall!

Not Even Close

You should check your facts (for a change). The following broadcasts (that I can think of - there may be others), many of them religious broadcasts, have been on-the-air as long or longer.

"Grand Ol' Opry" (1925)
"Music and the Spoken Word" (1929)
"Back to God Hour" (1929)
"The Lutheran Hour" (1930)
"The Metropolitan Opera" (1931)
"Jamboree USA" (1933)
"Renfro Valley Gathering" (1937)
"Old Fashioned Revival Hour" (1937)
"CBS World News Round-up" (1938)
"Radio Bible Class" (1938) Now titled "Our Daily Bread"
"The Voice of Prophecy" (1942)
"The Baptist Hour" (1949)
"Paul Harvey News and Comment" (1950)
"The Hour of Decision" (1950)

Many local religious broadcasts have also aired since 1950 and before.

Nice touch to list local stations this time, but your post still has nothing to do with Philly radio. I also noticed you have cross posted this on the Religious format and Classic Radio boards. Once again, you seem to think you are well intentioned and therefore the rules don't apply to your posts

Partial Credit - Shows that started on radio and continue on TV:

"The Guiding Light" (1937)
"Meet the Press" (1945)

Re: Not Even Close

I went back to re-read what their web site said. It said the longest running radio drama. I stand corrected.

"Longest running radio drama"

Depends on when in 1950 they started. "The Archers" has been broadcast on The BBC since Whitweek (The week of Pentecost in the Anglican Church), 1950 (would have been the 3rd week in May that year). The program is a daily soap opera about "the everyday life of country folk." The program premiered on the BCC Midland's service and was fed to the entire Home service at the start of 1951. It is now carried on BBC Radio 4 six days a week.

For many years, CBC Radio also carried the "programme" to English-speaking Canada.
