Longhorn Network

I have the Longhorn Network now on my Verizon Fios cable. It's great if you love obscure sports you never get to see.
But here's the thing.. I can't imagine that ESPN would really do this deal unless they knew UT was going to offer them a lot more than just one or two football games a year.

So here's my thinking: this whole deal with A&M leaving the Big 12 is probably just what UT wants. When A&M leaves, the Big 12 will have to find another school to fill the hole. If it's not Notre Dame, BYU or someone else of good stature, the Big 12 could be in jeopardy of losing its BCS status. That being the case, UT would then move to become an independent in football. Doing so would let them put ALL of their games on the Longhorn Network. (or at least all their home games) That might make this channel a more logical business venture for ESPN.

That's a step down in the world for Texas. National exposure is the name of the game when it comes to recruits and donors, and the 8/7 game each week on ABC is gold, with the earlier games on ABC and anything on ESPN/ESPN2 in second place, and the 'Horns had a lot of both over the last few years, at least until the bottom fell out last year. Longhorn Network steps in to provide a better alternative to PPV games, perhaps a slight step up for games on FSN (ESPN gamebreaks featuring an "over on the Longhorn Network" bit, coverage on Goal Line, and perhaps ESPN3?), or a lateral move for anything that might end up on ESPNU. It isn't going to replace real national games when everyone outside of the Big12 area is going to get Longhorn Network on a sports tier, and most everyone inside will get it digital-only.

That Sucks. Looks like XFinity-Which is Houston's primary cable provider-is one of several cable companies that are still holding out for The New LSN-Longhorn Sports Network, Which is powered by ESPN. I wish Houston would have got Verizon-Instead of AT&T U-Verse.

Uh.. so what? They promote games on ESPN all the time. If the Longhorn Network is another ESPN network, this is no different. I don't see what the big deal is.

True, cross-promotion happens all the time. And personally, I don't expect as much journalistic integrity from sportscasters as I would from, say, Diane Sawyer. But many find the practice troubling, so when a noteworthy example occurs, complaints don't surprise me.
