Longtime Birmingham radio host Patti Wheeler dies

WZZK is reporting that Patti Wheeler, half of "Patti and the Doc" on WZZK and later "Patti and Dollar Bill" on WDXB has passed away at the age of 71. She died after surgery at UAB to remove brain tumors.

The Birmingham News (via al.com) has the story as well as a link to a profile done on Patti in 2004.

Well to say she's been around the block would be an understatement, but she did it her way.For years Patti and Doc on ZZK was the thing in B'Ham,what a run they had, made a pile of money for the station. She had a quick whit and really connected with her listeners.May she rest in peace!

Both the WZZK and WDXB websites had tributes to her. I wasn't a fan, but I was aware of her when she and Dollar Bill were the tops at WZZK. Crossing the street helped legitimize a moved-into-Birmingham-proper WDXB in the country radio battle.

Classy of both of stations to acknowledge her on-air work. Condolences to the Wheeler family.

Sad news, indeed. :( She was a lengendary figure in Birmingham radio.

However, I do find it somewhat ironic that The Bull acknowledges this on their website....when it was their management who forced her into retirement because they didn't want to pay her substantial salary anymore. Pretty classy of them, for sure :-X

She will be missed.

This is very sad for me, as I used to listen to "Patti and the Doc" ALL the time...back when Dollar Bill was doing mid-days. I moved away before the pairing of "Patti and Dollar Bill," but I had the chance to listen in once in a while and enjoyed their program as well. I've had the honor of meeting Patti, Doc, and Dollar Bill...All very good people. Always felt like they were all part of the family to me. Of course Doc, and now Patti, will truly be missed. Thanks for the memories! My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Patti's family, friends and co-workers.

I walked in to my first day of work the day WZZK first made #1 12+ in the early 80s. Due in no small part to Patti & The Doc. She was a class act all the way, and a true Crazy Lady in the finest sense. Party at Patti's was an Experience, not to be missed.
It's truly sad to see the good ones go. It was a hell of a run though. See ya around, grrrrrl.
