Longtime CBS Correspondent Christopher Glenn Retiring

Veteran CBS correspondent Christopher Glenn will be retiring from the network next month, after a 35-year stay there. This story from Radio and Records.com notes that most of Glenn's work has been on radio.

However, TV viewers of a certain age will remember Glenn was heard as the off-camera narrator for "In The News", a series of three-minute segments explaining newsmaking issues to youngsters that aired between CBS' Saturday-morning cartoons from 1971 to 1984; and was seen as host of "30 Minutes", a newsmagazine for teenagers seen on Saturday afternoons during the early 1980's.

Count me as one that remembers "In The News." Right after "The Shazam/Isis Hour" and before "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids."

I would be of that age--30 Minutes in particular was a favorite of mine as a kid. Then again, I was a total news junkie from day one.

Both In The New and 30 Minutes were examples of TRUE educational/informational programming, not the slop that's served up today.

Oh, man, you're bringing back memories of the 70's! I was another avid watcher of "In the News" and "30 Minutes" -- a big Christopher Glenn fan!! Who could forget the Shazam/Isis Hour?? "Oh, mighty, ISIS!"

I have been meaning to post about him for the last year or so, but never got around to it. Whenever I hear his voice on CBS radio news, I get a flashback to my childhood watching Saturday morning cartoons and "In The News". As young as I was, I had appreciation for Christopher Glenn and what a good newscaster he was. I remember one edition of "In the News" where he covered Watergate and made it easy for even a 7 year old like myself to understand.

Just a few weeks ago I heard him on the radio and thought to myself "Wow, it seems like so many lifetimes ago when I watched "In The News" on Saturday mornings, so much in the world has changed since then, yet Christopher Glenn is STILL with CBS, how cool is that, he seems like an Uncle to me, I hope he never retires". So I am saddened to hear he is retiring, but he certainly deserves it after all those years of service!

Say, didn't Charles Osgood replace him for a while, before CBS eventually dropped the segments alltogether?

Hearing Mr. Glenn reporting the news of the week every Saturday morning was how I got my news as a kid in the 1970's. I also remember my mother was an avid listener to the Seattle CBS radio afilliate(KIRO 710AM). She would have the radio on while my brother and I were having our breakfast before leaving for school and Mr. Glenn could be heard giving the hourly news headlines of the day.I wish him luck in his future endeavors. The end of an era.<P ID="signature">______________
