Longtime Sarasota Disc Jockey is dead

Worked with both of them... once you got past him initially, Pete was really an interesting guy... I did news with him for a while in the late 80's...

Also recently spoke with Bob Barnes.. Worked with him numerous times starting when he 1st came here from upstate NY and starting running WDUV & started "Your Kind of Counntry" on sister WBRD back in the mid 1970's...was also with him at his attempt ar bringing 1490 back to life as WTRL... in the mid 80's and later when he was ops mgr ( I think ) at WSPB (1450) and then WMLO (106.3) ...He's doing well... and yes he babysits WTIS 97.1 in St. Pete, and his company "The On Hold Company" is hanging in there despite the economy... we chat every few months, and I called him after seeing the initial article about Pete last week... He says about the only time we get together anymore is for funerals of former co-workers... damn, getting old sucks...

Enjoy the day...

Walt

PETER WAS A GOOD GUY TO TALK RADIO WITH, I WORKED WITH HIS GIRFRIEND LUCILLE FOR A FEW YEARS IN A NON RADIO BUSSINESS AND WE WOULD DISCUSS BROADCASTING AND TELL RADIO STORYS OF OUR PASTS WHEN HE WOULD VISIT AT LUNCHTIME OR TO PICK HER UP......BIG ED EDWARDS

I began my career with then WSPB AM/FM while attending Sarasota High School in 1973 and stayed until moving to WYND to do middays in 1976. Neil Rodgers was our morning man! Larry Lujack's former newsman "Peter Brass", as Jahns had been known at WLS did middays, Lowell Schumaker (later Stan Grams) was in PMD and Art Howell was 7P-12M. Al Stottlemeyer was the P.D. I did overnights during my sophomore and junior years 6 nights a week (I wanted it that bad!) Peter was a real teacher and mentor, as were all of the serious real radio pros with this top-notch Walter-Weeks station at the time. We had a fulltime news staff and Craig Sager (of TBS/Turner Sports) was our sports director. (He's the guy in the beige trench coat you see run out on the field with Hank's teammates after Aaron hits the big one to get his first comments on tape.) Those were the days! R.I.P: Peter Jahns Brass...Hats off and headphones on to the talent who taught me and others at WSPB (Sarasota/Palmetto/Bradenton)...

How did WSDV (spb) do in the latest ratings? I know that did rather well with the Adult Standards switch last time around, though most thought it an aberation with Arbitron.

What's sad is knowing that Sarasota radio in the 1970's was once capable of supporting this level of talent across the market, not to mention a full-time, locally produced news-talk station.
