Longtime Vancouver, BC News Anchor Tony Parsons Steps Down (for now)

After 36 years at the helm of CHAN-TV's "News Hour," Tony Parsons has stepped down. There are reports that the departure was moved up from March due to some form of disagreement. After a bit of a sabbatical, he's expected to resurface sometime in the new year on CHEK-TV, former sister station of CHAN. He's reportedly an investor in that station, which survived Global's intent to shut it down.

That said, you get a choice of video linkage (viewable in the USA):

Tony's Final News Hour in full
or,
Reflections and a Fond Farewell

Bar none, he's perhaps the best news anchor the entire Pacific Northwest (yes, including Seattle in that) has ever had. And, much like Arnold, he'll be back.

Yeah, these days if you weren't hired in the late 70's or early 80's for television news, chances are good you'd be lucky to see 16 years!

Tony Parsons started last night on CHEK's 10pm news. Article from Saturday's Times-Colonist:

He also appeared on CHEK News a few days ago to talk about his new gig, prior to his official start date:

The station also converted from the virtual news set back to a real set, and brought its master control back to Victoria. Now all it needs is to have its website separated from Canwest's (Parson's bio isn't up yet, and the banner at the top still says its late news starts at 11).

And just out of interest, I chanced upon this ad taken out by BCTV on the now-defunct "Chinese Times" in September 1992, announcing that News Hour was now available in Cantonese on SAP.

He is the Legend...I find it incredible that Tony is rumoured to be making the commute after the CBC to CHEK for the 10pm cast???? It sounds like late April Fools..but it seems its the case. I remember personally doing monday to friday radio in Vancouver and commuting to Victoria to do weekend Sports..and THAT was a commute.....Tony is 71. If he's doing that..that is fantastic. Then again I took bus and ferry..I am sure Tony has the harbour to harbour chopper!!!!

I don't think Tony was the only one -- it's been said that Bill Haugland, anchor of the legendary "Pulse" news at CFCF Montreal often made daily treks between Montreal and his home in Vermont (in the US, of course) before retiring a couple of years back. If that was true, I bet the custom agents at the border knew him by first name basis, and expected what Bill will answer to when they asked the questions.
