Longwave season begins...for me anyway.

Fired up the old Drake R8B, and hooked up my 1530+ antenna for a little pre-hurricane DX.

Dropped down to the Euro-Middle East-African longwave frequencies, and heard both 162/France & 252/Ireland. 252KHZ popped up for a few minutes with enough strength for me to detect a bit 'o the old Irish accent. Although barely above the threshold, I did hear both a French song and a female speaking French on 162. Both stations had faded out by the time a came up to start this thread.

Hets on several other frequencies.

On the MW band, its that time of year again, when stations that broadcast friday night high school football, for some unexplained reason, forget to power down/shut down. Imagine that. Heard a few tonight.

I was just going to post about LW conditions tonight and saw your post. I connected the longwires up earlier tonight with the same idea in mind and was surprised at the TA whistles all over the MW band (I don't usually DX this time of year). Anyway, here's what I'm hearing in West Michigan right now on LW:

153 khz, strong carrier but no audio
162 khz, France International with music and French talk, signal weak but readable, no fading noticed, the strongest of the bunch.
171 khz, weak audio
183 khz, Europe 1 coming in about the same level as France.
198 khz, Some muffled talk, presumed BBC but tough copy with the summer noise.
207 khz, strong carrier but no audio
216 khz, weak carrier
252 khz, Talk and music heard here but beacon interference is rough, can't tell if it's Ireland or Algeria.

Excellent news. Now time to dust off my Zenith Trans Oceanic.

Midnight EST, just checked the band again, BBC now strong on 198 khz and getting over the static. Some audio on 234 khz has also surfaced and 216 khz has also come up nicely. If not for the static coming through here, these would be excellent conditions. Still fun to hear these in August!

I didn't noticed any LW reception until I get home from work late tonight. Heard only an extremely faint audio on 153 kHz after midnight. Sounded like voice and music, but was hard to tell. The signal is within the noise floor or atmospheric noises.

I'm getting France Inter on 162 kHz (slight correction for Kilokat, it's not France International aka RFI), barefoot on my DX-440. The music at the moment clearly coming through matching the stream (http://www.franceinter.fr/player).

Trying for others now!

When you say "barefoot" are you using the antenna in the radio as opposed to a longwire?

That is correct. All of my LW/MW DX catches have been on the internal antenna.

I've also used all internal antenna for DX. I heard three Japanese (NHK) stations on AM with this (594/693 Tokyo, and 774 Akita).

SW Ohio.

162 was again on last night in the 10 p.m hour, and stronger than my first reception. I assume I was hearing France. Faded out a few minutes later.

Audio, but barely above threshold on 198/UK, and 225. Although I heard audio on 225, I couldn't make out the language, so it may have been a domestic AM broadcaster mixing on the freq.

Good job. I was only able to hear those when I was in Hawaii.

The only thing I've been finding here in the mid-Atlantic on LW is some US based MW stuff. Usually able to hear it and sometimes ID stations, but nothing overseas yet with just the internal antenna. I need to get my longwire up in the trees again.
