Lonsberry Steps In It (Again)

The Rochester D&C reports WHAM and talk show host Bob Lonsberry are targets of a lawsuit. WHAM fired Lonsberry years ago for inferring Rochester's (African American) mayor was a gorilla, but re-hired the talk show host, whose vocal delivery bears an amazing resemblance to Ned Flanders. Surprise! Another "issue" that blows up in their faces.

Sounds like a bunch of lawyers are going to make a bunch of money, and WHAM and Lonsberry are going to get a lot of press. Meanwhile, their insurance carrier is sweating bullets, and planning to raise premiums. If Clear Channel isn't self-insured.

The fact that Lonsberry's statements came the day after John Gisel was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide would seem to make him culpable if the story is accurate. The language used will be vitally important to the case, but it seems that terminology like accusing Gisel of being a "cold-blooded murderer" would fit the definition of slander.

I bet this kind of thing never happened back in Jack & George's day. My, how times have changed.

No it never did because Jack and George were entertainers, not dillweeds that sound like Ned Flanders.

IMHO WHAM has gone down hill for many years from what the station once was when Slattery and Haefner were on the air.

It's doubtful that Looneytunesberry will get fired; but one can only hope ;D

Lonsberry and the others like him are a very good argument for reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine....much as blood-sucking companies like Clear Channel, Cumulus, etc are all good arguments for reinstating the old one-owner/7-station limit.

Maybe not the 7/7/7 limit but something more updated for the times. There really isn't any reason why a group should own more than three stations in medium/small markets and maybe five in large markets. And certainly a limit on how many total stations a group can own. In the last ten years it pretty much became limitless and deregulated. How'd that work out?
