Look What They Did! WHUM in Columbus

Yeah, it's a Quinn station..Bruce's wife, Mitzi actually started it and now that Bruce taking things easy, he helps run the show. I believe it has been on the air for quite a while now. I've heard it, and I can only take about 10 minutes of it at the most. Sounds a lot like how his old station in Attica was programmed.

Our company gave Bruce Quinn about half a million dollars for 95.7
in Attica. Looks like he is having fun spending our bucks and playing
radio, I mean music.

I am sure that Russ Oasis threw in a few bucks, too

I'm already bored:

Bluegrass

Irish Jig

Bluegrass

Irish Jig

Cajun ballad

Banjo music

Fiddle Music

New Age Music with Mandolin

ZzZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

There's "eclectic" and then there's "train wreck for 2 people to listen to".

I'll try it again later before I totally NOT ever listen again.
But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't put more than 1 or 2 Irish jigs in my iPod....and probably not back-to-back.

WHUM has company on 98.5. WSHI LP Shelbyville is on the air now in living mono. When I heard it earlier, it was "Life Talk" Christian programming...I'm about halfway between WHUM & WSHI...WHUM is quite a bit stronger here.

They just put a new frequency in Columbus with the FCC.

It reads as if "Dutchman" still has to go through an application process for this. Just like a half dozen or more other applicants, I'd guess. Hey "Chief"...will you file?

An engineer told me Bruce and Mitzi will be heard in Indianapolis again if
they get this major power increase. Yes, we all know they were on the
old WKLU.

I've seen untruthful and unflattering comments about the Quinns posted here before. And I hate to give the writers additional ammunition. But allow me to clarify a few points.

1) It's not just Bruce who owned the previous Quinn stations. The majority of the financial investments came from other people - most notably members of Bruce's immediate family. Most of those millions being referred to earlier in this post went to them. Without elaborating, let me add that Bruce and Mitzi also have to face hefty 'out-of-pocket' expenses that are normally covered under an employer's benefit plan.

Now, I'll agree that Bruce and Mitzi don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. But they aren't nearly as filthy rich as some are implying on this post.

2) For lack of a better term, American Heritage might be the best way to describe the WHUM format. This includes all the musical influences (both domestic and foreign) that has shaped what we know today as 'pop', 'rock', 'country', etc. Some may find it boring, but others (especially well-educated professionals who enjoy all styles of music) love the appeal of never knowing what to expect next. No, its not a good commercial format (advertisers demand specific demographics and quick results), but the fact that its commercial-free compliments this unique broadcasting offering. Thanks to the fact that it's now steamed worldwide on the internet, WHUM is reaching one helluva lot of people.

3) Whether or not you like the WHUM format is really beside the point. Most commercial stations are only interesting in broadcasting to generate a profit. However, Bruce and Mitzi have managed to successfully generate profits to continue broadcasting in a way that satisfies themselves. In the film industry, it's this attitude of professionalism that set Spielberg, Lucas and Coppola apart from the competition early in their careers.

Be honest, now. Wouldn't we all love to accomplish that in our lives? Doing it 'our' way and being successful at it? You really can't argue with the Quinns' success, and if you attempt to discredit them, you will succeed only in displaying your own petty envy and jealousy to the rest of us.

What's the secret? Anyone who knows the Quinns understands that Bruce and Mitzi love radio more than money. They also know that Bruce has high intelligence, a driving curiosity, courage and an incredible 'entreprenural' spirit that has enabled him to successfully do things...as one of Bruce's favorite artists, Frank Sinatra, once sang it...'MY WAY' for several decades. Its also the reason why Bruce and Mitzi are able to continue to find hidden opportunities that have been overlooked by their much larger commercial competitors.

You may not agree with all of their decisions. But is it too much to ask to simply give the Quinns a respectful "thumbs up" anyway? Because if it is too much to ask, I only have four words to say to you...

[size=10pt]
EAT YOUR HEART OUT!

Oh! I see. A programming genius here. Maybe Bruce and Mitzi should
take over WKOA here in Lafayette or Q95 in Indy with this new sound.

Dawg - are you seriously putting WKOA in the same class as WFBQ? Uh, how many stations are asking to air “The Breakfast Club” in syndication?

In 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2006, Bob & Tom were recipients of the Marconi Award from the National Association of Broadcasters. Their show is the only five time Marconi Award winner. And from 1991 to 1998, Bob & Tom received The Billboard Magazine Radio Personality of the Year award. They have four CDs on sale across the country, and have also produced their own television specials for Comedy Central and HBO.

In comparison, Mark Allen and Annie James have…uh…well… really nice plaques from St. Judes after the Radiothon. I don’t mean to badmouth K105, but let’s face it -- there’s nothing exciting or innovative coming out of any of the stations on McCarty Lane. Neither John in the front office nor Marci in South Bend would allow that! K105 is just another Top 40 country juke box that’s #1 in Lafayette for one reason: conservative country listeners hate change.

Sorry, dude. But citing WFBQ and WKOA in the same breath as examples of ‘programming genius’ is a lot like citing both Disney World and The Largest Ball of Twine in Minnesota as great tourist attractions. I’ll agree with one. But the other?

And as for whether I'd rather work for Bruce Quinn or John Trent, that's easy. I'll take Bruce any time. Now, if someone ever asks me to choose between Angotti's greed and Trent's paranoia...well, that's a tough one.

I went to high school with Mitzi and congratulate her on building a station from scratch.

Wow - this is like the WTTS thread. Why not combine them? What would I do with your station.

So I don't care so much for civil war era music all the time. I will note this isn't the same 10 songs you hear on every other radio station in America.

I suppose because the station doesn't copy Z 100 from years ago it's crap?

There are always stations that are different and distinct.

Examples :

WSLM Salem. Tic Toc Tic Toc Tic Toc it's 12 o'clock. Or the broadcaster's prayer. Or begging for cash to light the radio tower with Christmas lights. Color Radar Weather. Turkey decoys destroy downtown Salem. Thanks Don.

WNAP Chris and Smash Buster Boomer...and Chuck.

KJ 100 with lateral replays

WNDE 1260 pre AC

WCSI with reverb

WLW 80's to late 90's

13 WIFE before WNDE 1260

WoofBoom

"This is Gary Gears and WXLW has Balls"

"Bill Shirk here on SPACE STATION SHIRK"

Bouncin Bill Baker (RIP)

My favorite - Rockin 95 WFBQ pre hippies with Top 40 TM Jingles and no jocks

WFBQ hippies - like the Beatles

Tell me one station that stands out like WHUM locally.

I didn't like Kiss 99 Disco but some did. It was different at the time. Name a station today that was the same as 10 years ago? 5 years ago? 1 year ago?

Easy to gripe when you aren't paying the bills, living the life to make it happen.

Why not drop in and visit Bruce and Mitzi and see what they are doing in Columbus that has the other stations paranoid.

(In the Jim Mora "Playoffs???) voice...

"Paranoid? Paranoid?? Are you serious? Paranoid??

(End of Jim Mora voice)

Nothing WHUM is doing has any other station paranoid, including Quinn's next little pet project at 93.5. If I took my own personal "eclectic" mix of CD's at home and loaded them into WinAmp, maybe I could have a radio station that everyone evys too. Their station slogan is "Community Radio," yet I never see them out actually DOING anything in the community like the other stations. Actions speak louder than a positioning statement and some pics of Columbus on their website in a box.

We believe Quinn has ambitions for more new stations. One in the Lafayette
market between WKOA and WGLM. The other in the Bloominton area between
Radio Now and Q-95.
Will these be WHUM repeaters? Are they trying to spread their remarkable
new sound state wide?

I'm sure none of the radio stations in Columbus are paranoid about Bruce & Mitzi's 100 watt iPod.
For the most part, WHUM is totally insignificant in the market, and there are literally thousands of webcasters playing music just as weird at WHUM's. Reising's stations have been streaming for years.
I'm sure none of the folks at White River Broadcasting and Reising Radio Partners are more than slightly concerned with the possibilities of adding Bruce's savvy to another Columbus station.
But the 93.5 allocation will be auctioned by the FCC and I know for a fact that at least 2 others (with the cash) will be bidding.
Personally, I think another FM, in addition to the WYGB/WXCH moves currently under scrutiny is total overkill for Bartholomew County's 75,000 inhabitants.
If I had the money to participate in an FCC auction for new allocation, and the money to build a new station and transmitter site assuming I win the auction, only to have to go up against White River's WKKG, Y-106 and Oldies 104.9 or Reising's QMIX and KORN Country for advertising dollars, I think I'd rather invest in a passbook savings account. More potential for income.
Even with the passion I have for radio, I'd invest my money in something that could possibly show a profit.

Yeah, 47RPM...you keep on thinking that its all about formats and market saturation. You keep thinking in that fashion, so owners with an entirely different set of values will fully understand why you are NOT financially capable of either comprehending the 'big picture' - and therefore, financially incapable of bidding for an FCC frequency.

Here's a hint, 47RPM -- do you enjoy 'chess"?

Contemplate that thought for a while. I assure you Keith Reising and Tasha Mann are doing the same.

We are expecting there will be major changes and upgrades at WHUM
very soon. We hear that Bruce Quinns health has recovered. Community
events broadcasts are something he is well known for.

I too remember the former stations owned by Quinn. High School ball,
county fairs, and festivals were how he paid his bills.
I saw him put down many times on this board for doing it too. He is one of
the last to do this local radio thing.
I suspect as well, that you will hear many future Columbus events on WHUM.
