Looking for old WOKI Airchecks

This was my favorite station as a kid.. I lived in Dadridge, about 30 miles east of K-Town, so I cant really say im a K-Town Native, but I grew up listening to WOKI from about 1984-1993 until they had gone country... Also,, I know this isnt a K-town station,, but im also looking for WKSF Airchecks 99.9 from Asheville which was easily receivable in my area, and much of knoxville if you werent near the Sharp Ridge Towers....... But if you have any,, even the mid 70s airchecks, either scoped or unscoped,, doesnt matter,,, but my priority is looking for the I-100 era airchecks when they were a straight ahead CHR and didnt lean on Rock so much, but like I said,, send me all the airchecks you can get from WOKI,, even the mid 70s ones..... and Also WKSF Asheville from 1983-1994 before they went country... my email is [email protected] I would appreciate it so much,, will accept anything you can get......Thanks...

I would not have considered WOKI a straight ahead CHR station during the I-100 era. I considered I-100 more of a Top 40 radio station with a Classic Rock lean. Plus they ignored a lot of the R&B Top 40 hits back during that time period. I didn't get to listen to WOKI during the 70's, so I can't speak much about that time period, however I felt they had the best music and radio talent during the time period of 1981 to 1986 when they had DJ's like Brother John St John and Shotgun Stevens.

Well, To me at the time it was top 40 cause thats all I was exposed to,, I know WKSF Asheville kinda tended to have an Adult Lean,,, but with a Rock lean at the same time,, both stations didnt play much Rhythmic/Rap/ or Dance music,, but they would play stuff like Celine Dion, and then play a song like Metalica-Nothing Else Matters,,lol During the final stage of like 1992 I-100 started to play more rhythmic and Dance music, and I know I-100 aired Open House party on the weekends.... If I recall, I think Knoxville had another CHR station in the mid 80s on either 95.3 or 95.7,,, called Power 95,, and it tended to play more of the Rhythmic stuff that WOKi shyed away from.... You cant deny that the jocks on WOKI through all the years were very talented, they kept the station fun and always sounded friendly and cheerful and like they really enjoyed their jobs and being on air,,, its not like that today with all the voice tracking and stuff, and corporate read cards were the jocks cant show their true talent.

Down the road in the greenville Spartenburg area Power 93.3 WBBO was a day and night difference from WOKI and WKSF as they were very Dance/Rhythmic friendly and didnt play the hard rock stuff.. But like I said,, If anyone has airchecks,, either scoped or unscoped,, send them to [email protected] I dont care about the audio quality as long as i can hear it... Its been 15 to 20 years since these stations aired the top 40 format, so im sure the audio quality isnt so great now days,, but I just want to hear the Liners-Sweepers, and the Jocks,, and at least some song snippets.. Commercials are okay too... I realize that Power 93.3 wasnt audible in K-town,, but for those that lived farthest south east it would boom in at times.

WOKI had that WLS status and goodness knows Brother John St John borrowed enough from the Big 89. That FM signal covered a wide area and was big time rock and roll radio for places that had none.

I grew up in Lexington, KY and top 40 radio didn't exist in the early 80's; TM Stereo Rock doesn't count. WOKI played something resembling the hits and had disc jockeys so I listened. It became a challenge when 100.1 moved closer to Lexington but WOKI was still possible.

At one time, I had an aircheck of a Brother John Boogie Check. The signal broke up in the middle but I swear hearing a listener call Brother John a "dumb mo**erf**ker". Oops!

I have an aircheck on CD from "Brother Bill"(Bill Prather)that also has GT and Pat Garrett from around 1986. I met Bill as a ham radio operator at the Shelby NC hamfest a few years ago. I'd been wanting to meet him since he was the afternoon jock at 99.9 WKSF around that time. He gave it to me by way of another friend who had broadband internet. We email each other quite a bit. He did have his aircheck on a site at one time. I'll ask him. As far as WOKI, All I have is old tapes that are just about had it. I put them all on one tape and its about to go too. I listened to WOKI from around 78' till the time it went country. "Brother John" was the man back then. (79-82).

That was my time too, 1992-93 in Knoxville. Do you remember the 100.3/93.1 swap. Z-93 seemed to have more of a CHR lean to it IIRC. Believe it or not, there's a WWZZ (Z-93) bumper sticker on a stop sign where I live now in Connecticut! Small world ;D

Was there really an actual coordinated swap between 100.3 and 93.1? I thought when WOKI gave up CHR, that 93.1 just simply filled the hole by picking up the format themselves. I didn't live here at the time, so please fill me in on the details.

Still haven't got an answer on this. Can anyone fill me in on the history? I was always under the impression that I-100 and Star 93.1 were completely unrelated.

I believe it was a direct format swap. At the time, 93.1 was a country station and I-100 was of course CHR. IIRC, the jocks at I-100 were then heard on 93.1 after the switch. After the switch, 93.1 was known for a while as Z93 (WWZZ).

It was only a few years after when it became Star 93.1. Then came another switch with 102.1, which is now Star 102.1 to this day.

Thanks for the response. It's interesting, considering all that, I guess you could say there could be a single line drawn which connects I-100 to Star 102.1. I had no idea that the two stations had such a connection.

So its almost as if,, I-100 were around today,, it would sound pretty much just like star 102.1, but be on 100.3 instead of 102.1........ Kinda what I wondered. I honestly think that the Z-93 name and calls only lasted a few months, and that following summer they were Star 93.1..... idk for sure..

If I remember correctly, when it switched from Z-93 to Star 93.1, it went from regular CHR to adult CHR. It had to have been around 1993 or 1994.

Later, however, many adult CHR's evolved into regular CHR. I guess WWST was part of that trend.

And now WWST is Adult CHR again. Sometimes they even sound close to Hot AC.

hmmmm.....I prefer Electric 94.9,, even though its not really a Knoxville station.

Also, didn't 94.3 pick up regular CHR when WWZZ became WWST?

Were these stations related as well?

94.3 had an absolutely horrible signal, and that's where CHR's at the time were ending up.

Oh I remember those days! I think they are often referred to as "....back in the days of real radio." Do you think we'll ever have anything like that again? Oh, since we day tripping down memory lane.......here's a couple more names from the glory days of "WOKI-FM 100" : Mike Beverly and Lynn Wright. Does anyone remember them?

I remember Mike beverly quite well...Lynn Wright sounds familier as well...

Anyway,, 94.3 wasnt really a CHR,, but more of a Modern Rock station with a few Pop, Rhythmic songs mixed in... Also 106.7 was a Modern Rocker with a CHR feel for awhile, and 95.7 was doing hot ac kinda like Star, but actually sounded hotter than star at times...

I think there was a Power 95.3 TNZ for a brief time when I was like in first grade,,, kinda more of a Black/Dance leaning CHR,,, while WOKI,, then Hits 100 still leaned on the rock side of things.

Also,,, Does anyone know why their were always young kids hanging out at the old WOKI studios,,, Where these kids from the DJs there, or was part of the building used as Day Care or something... I heard storys of kids tearing stuff up and old buster having to come in and fix things alot... I cant completely confirm this story, so if any of you guys can....Feel free...

One more thing,, another story I havent yet confirmed... I dont know if it was for WOKi or Z-93,,, but I guess Johnny Pirkle or the PD one or the other picked up a homeless Alcoholic on the street one cold night, and let him run nights playing songs and Adverts, but I dont think he was suppoed to talk much,,,, anyway, Supposedly one night he got a little too liquired up and was removed and fired..... Can anyone confirm any of the above rumours.
