looking for smalltown full service stations

I am the content editor of an internet radio show that discusses radio. We're doing a special show about local full service radio, and we are looking for radio stations that still offer full service programming -- news, high school sports, specialty shows, maybe religious services on Sundays, ETC. We ask in hopes of interviewing people at these stations. If anyone knows of any such station still existing in the US, please let us know at:
[email protected]
Thanks.

KUBA AM 1600 and FM 95.5 in Yuba City, CA sounds like a live and local full-service station. I sometimes listen during morning and evening drives, but I don't know what programming they run in the other dayparts. I believe the station was sold last fall. I hope their highly local programming continues, but I'm not very hopeful. According to Google, their website is http://www.kubaradio.com but, as of today, that link appears to be dead.

Although part of the broadcast day they run music programming from Dial Global in some dayparts WZBG 97.3 in Litchfield, Connecticut has a local morning and afternoon show. Local News, CBS News, Local Weather and Traffic Reports, Specialty Shows on the weekend including a Swap-Shop Show and a Jazz Show. They're really involved in the community. They don't stream however. http://www.wzbg.com/

WORX 96.7 FM and WXGO 1270 AM in Madison, Indiana is pretty close to full-service. Local news in AM drive (and PM drive too, coupled with IRN-USA Radio Network News at top of the hour, local morning show, high school sports (football, basketball), a coaches corner segment every Saturday with a high school coach, local church services/programs on Sunday. Granted, I think they use Dial-Global for music programming, but they do quite a bit to serve a four-county region in Kentuckiana... www.worxradio.com

The fastest way to find these gems is to check out these two websites.....

Surf Muzik (Use Google Translate if you need translation)
Tune In

Both sites let you search by state to make it easier for you

That said, I love the small town stations. Sadly, they're THE ONLY things which resemble REAL local radio (Or TV for that matter!) these days. What a shame too :(

Hope this helps.....

Cheers :D

Try WCVA 1340/1490 AM in Culpeper Virginia. They seem to still be fairly locally oriented.

Here's a pretty good AC format full service station, KXEO 1340 AM from Mexico, MO

http://info.kxeo.com/

They have a country FM sister KWWR 95.7 FM

http://info.kwwr.com/

They're locally voicetracked and automated, not canned syndicated feeds......

WJPA AM and FM in Washington, Pennsylvania.
The most excellent example I can think of in this area.

I totally agree. It is a top-notch outlet, in a region with its share of full-service small-market stations, many rooted in a day when for most the primary competition was KDKA.

Some examples ...

WMBS 590 (CBS) Uniontown

http://www.wmbs590.com/

Butler County Radio Network stations WISR 680 (CBS), WBUT 1050 and WLER 97.7 in Butler

http://insidebutlercounty.com/

WBVP 1230 Beaver Falls and its sibling WMBA 1460 in Ambridge

http://wbvp-wmba.com/

And a recent, if somewhat unorthodox add to the list, WTYM 1380 in Kittanning under ownership by the Family-Life Media-Com Inc. ministry that also runs a cable TV station and a freebie afternoon paper that isn't quite a rival to the local Leader Times but does fill the bill if you need something to look at during a lunchbreak.

Just found this thread. Better late than never. WBTA 1490 Batavia, N. Y. Local, local, local.

WHEP 1310 AM Foley Alabama Family owned for 50+ years. Live & Local. First class station.

WBTM 1330 in Danville, Virginia (http://www.wbtm1330.com)- the station mixes a well-executed oldies format with such elements as ABC news, a full local news department, a Trading Post broadcast, and a strong lineup of local personalities along with national hosts Rush Limbaugh noon-3pm and Mike Harvey from 10p-5am. The station is very plugged into the Danville community with contests, remotes and lots of energy. 5,000 watts non-directional daytime and 1,000 watts directional at night.

The station is part of a classic AM/FM combo with sister country station WAKG 103.3 FM (http://www.wakg.com), the sole 100,000-watt FM signal not absorbed into one of the three radio markets surrounding Danville (Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, Raleigh-Durham and Roanoke-Lynchburg). While it doesn't have all the full service elements of WBTM, local news is aired frequently and the station is mostly live and local with strong personalities (most of which aren't shared between the two stations) and a well programmed format of current and classic country.
