Hello all,

I'm searching for those who worked at the legendary WQID-FM in Gulfport/Biloxi.
Would like know your name (if ya got one), and what you remember about your time at the station. It can be the songs that were big, the equipment that was used, air staff lineups, etc.

If you have visited the Mississippi board you can see that I'm trying to get interest up in creating a QID tribuite website.

Any information you can share/contribute would be apprciated!

Thanks,
Brady

Former PD from 1990 Beau Richards is at WAOA in Florida...He worked with the infamous Rev Red...I was at Power 108 kickin' their butt at the time...LOL...But he could give you some insight about that time period...

I never worked there, but from '79 to '83, I was at sister station SL-100, Laurel-Hattiesburg. I remember a few names from the coast.

Our first PD at SL was Ken Knight, who came up from 'QID...did pm drive for several years. Last I heard of Ken, he was using his real name of Bill Jackson and working in Orlando, but that was at least a decade ago. (Ken gave me the honor of being the very first voice to say 'SL-100' on Oct 31st, 1979).

I remember the name Bobby Case as their award winning production director for so many years. I believe his real name was Gene Wooten and he wound up in New York with ABC back in the 80's.

Kirk Cliatt was PD for a while during the early 80's...don't what became of him. Last heard his name mentioned in the payola scandal involving a Memphis indy promoter baxk in the 80's.

Of course, Mickey Coulter was the long time morning guy, but I never met him or know what happened to him.

The longtime architect of the station was Bob Lima...last known address for him was in Daytona Beach as a GM...Cumulus I think. He could probably fill in a whole bunch of lines for you. That station was his baby and more than likely has a sofy spot in his heart for it.

You Never Know Who You'll Come Across On This Board

Russ L. Williams...Lord have mercy! It has been sooooooooooo long! I came across your reply to another one of my posts while at work today, but couldn't come across it again!

I hope you're doing well. As for me, I've been out of the biz nearly a decade, but still running my mouth in a call center in Lakeland, Florida, just east of Tampa. My last radio job was as PM Drive/Asst OM for a AM Standards/AC in nearby Winter Haven until it went dark (it's now a Black/Spanish block).

Would love to hear what you've been up to all these years. A couple of folks on this board have also been asking about another of our brethern from those days, Ron Davis.

Happy Holidays!

Yes, it's been a long time...more than 20 years! Since this thread is titled for WQID, I'll say a word about that....Dangerous Dan McKay left SL-100 and went to the sister station WQID.....Bob lima said he'd never hire a guy with a lisp, but he did!

Now, back to SL-100.....ss for Ron Davis, last I heard he was there at SL-100, but it's been years so I'm out of the loop. But I remember when Ron first came in there to work at WQIS-AM. I started using him on a fill-in or weekend shift on the fm, and was criticized by some for putting a black guy on SL-100, but stood my ground. Granville Walters said do what I thought was right. It was the younger folks that had a problem...like David what's his name who was in sales. Even though it was more than 25 years ago, it still sounds asinine.

As for me, since my SL days from '79-'83 (with shares in the 50's!), no easy way to answer that, but here's the compact version.....warning, it's like a laundry list!

Baton Roge (WLCS-AM), jock, 83-84
McAllen-Brownsville, TX (KBFM), PD, 84-85
Starkville, MS (WKOR), PD, 85-88
Tupelo (WWZD)...GM, 89-90
Laurel-H'burg (Kix 106)...sales, 90-90
Tuscaloosa, AL (WTXT-FM)...first time Country PD, 90-97
Rome, GA (South 107), PD, 97-00
Tuscaloosa, (Radio south) OM/PD, 00-02,
Columbus, MS (WSMS-FM) PD, 02-03
Tuscaloosa (Clear Channel) OM/PD, 03-06

....got bounced in the Clear Channel debacle a month ago, but starting Monday 11/27/06.....
Jackson, MS (WUSJ, US 96.3) PD and PM Drive

So, it's been fun and I'm a survivor. So far.

I know where Lakeland is...I worked in Sarasota back in the 70's before my Sl-100 days.

Kirk Cliatt got into the weather forecasting game after leaving WQID, if I remember correctly. I know he was the main weatherguy at WJHG-TV 7 in Panama City in the late 80's; he came in to replace Captain Norm Miller when Norm went over to WMBB (while I was MD/afternoons at WFSY) and then he showed up for awhile at WRBL-TV 3 in Columbus in the early 90's doing the same thing (I was OM/PD at WGSY at that time). I think he was also driving up to Atlanta on weekends and doing weather stand-ups for CNN while at WRBL. Don't know what happened to him from there.

Also, a buddy of mine spent some time at 'QID in the late 80's. Russ Ragan was there for a short stint. He's in Dothan, Alabama doing farm and market reports (picking up the work his dad, Gene Ragan, did for all those years).

TDO

Whenever I run into people who remember me from WQID, they talk about the night that I "smashed" Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and refused to play it for a whole night. We must have had it in the super hot rotation then.

Then came the fatal night I came out of a political spot for some local election for a candidate named "Windy" Sweatman. I'm hoping that was his nickname. After the stopset I said, "A guy named Windy? Is that like a boy named Sue?" Apparently Windy had a lot of influence because the morning after, Bob Lima blew me (AND my lisp...LOL!) out.

Gotta say it was a lot of fun though...'QID had an awesome signal, a ridiculously large share in its demo at night and on a good night you could even hear it in Laurel. Speaking of which...Russ L. Williams! You're a real radio survivor! Congrats on hanging in there!

When Russ hired me I was doing nights at Top 40/Rock WHSY (Y-104) in Hattiesburg. SL-100 seemed a little more A/C than Y-104 ... especially during the day, almost bordering on full-service with their big noon news block and Paul Harvey. And God, airing those football games on the weekend! Almost fell asleep more than once when I had to babysit the board for them.

After 'QID, I moved back to New Orleans and did P/T and weekends on WQUE-FM (Q-93) AM station 13-Q. They were big into the "AM stereo" craze and were playing strictly MTV hits. Didn't anyone tell them kids didn't listen to music on AM radio anymore? Spent some years at WTIX, then at Oldies KHOM 104.1 which was licensed to Houma but was city-grade in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

I went back to radio full-time in the mid 90's when former SL-100 afternooner Ken Clark gave me a call. He was OM of a Biloxi group of stations who just decided to take their 105.9 frequency (licensed to Pascagoula) Top 40. I originally did nights; then the coked-up morning/PD guy decided not to show up for work or a remote or something. I took over mornings and PD duties and over the next year took the station 12+ from a .8 to a 6.3. As a reward, I got blown out. (Well, a little more to it than that...suffice to say I again said something deemed "dangerous" on the air.)

I got out of radio and now do internet marketing in Seattle. I also continue doing corporate work as a mobile DJ which, believe me, pays more than radio EVER did! Anyway, more about me at http://www.DanMcKay.com

Keep on rockin'

"Dangerous" Dan McKay

I don't care what they say. there's only ONE Dangerous Dan McKay! I'm going to find the picture with you standing by the generator fence pointing at the danger sign. The most dangerous man in radio! I guess the last time I saw you was your Mardi Gras party in '84 when you lived on St. Charles in New Orleans. I left for KBFM in McAllen the next week. Do you still have any family down in New Orleans? If so, how did they fare with Katrina?

Didn't really know him; just met him on my way out the door. I think we overlapped a week before I headed for Texas.

I am the former Music Director and 6p-10p host at WQID from late '90 to early '92.

I was there until it officially dropped the Top 40 format. It changed to Magic 93.7.

The PD at the time Todd Martin was/is in upper Traverse Michigan. Midday host Joey Parker has been in TV for years. He's anchoring in Nebraska now. Part-timer Mitch English is on the Daily Buzz national TV show on WB.

-Kevin "Crash" Davis

"Modern Mitch" English ... there's someone I haven't thought about in 15 years. Good to hear that he made it to TV.

There was another part-timer, I think named Paul something, who did a remote at the Cuco's After Work Fiesta, one day during my shift, and awarded his prizes (on the air) to young ladies who were wearing a certain color underwear, and (again on the air) made them show him proof of the color. lol

94 QID was truly a one-of-a-kind radio station... That place was the most fun I ever had on the radio.

The only one I can remember is the Cowboy. He was in the WVMI side. I was there on QID in 1979. Had a bit of a break until the late 80's and did late nights on a new station in Maine, WQSS. Then went to WRFR-LP where I was scheduler/programmer/engineer. It's no longer like it used to be. I miss those days.

Lots of good times there. Remember the Queen promo we did in the Bicycle Contest. The jingle went:

"I want to win a bicycle,
I want to win it free.
I want to win a bicycle,
By listening to Q I D!"

I worked at WQID in early 1982. My Air Name is Paul Jason, and at the time, was also in the US Air Force stationed at Keesler AFB for Tech School Training. That only gave me about 6-months in the area before I went to my permanent duty station, but I loved being at WQID. one of my greatest memories is the song KeyLargo. Without fail, that song would play every morning around 5am as I was getting ready for an active day of training, and always brought a smile to my face. The other song that meant a lot to me at the time was Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis. I had a girlfriend on the base, and when I dedicated it to her on day, I heard from many fellow airman about my sentimental dedication. My two cents for what its worth!

Wow, is the old board still alive?

Just goes to show you the strenght of a legend! I first started this thread 2 years ago and it still draws interest today. There may not be that many people who remember WQID, but for those who knew it and/or worked it, it is a testament to true radio programing and vision. I only wish we still had QID with us.

As someone who wasn't on the inside, I want thank everybody that has kept this thread alive with the stories of the legendary QID and those who have shared stories of how QID knocked all other stations they worked out of the competition for best worked.

Thanks everyone! And keep the stories coming!

Wow! What great memories those names bring. I am starting to put together a Tribute page to both WQID & WVMI. I heard from a lot of jocks when I put together the youtube tribute (www.youtube.com/watch?v=04iGBOua2SM). Many have mentioned doing a tribute page.

So here's the score. Send me your pics, airchecks or even audio salutes and I will start putting this on my website at www.boblima.com. I already have some airchecks uploaded that will bring back memories. I will also start a list of all the jocks I remember and where are they now.

Anyway send them to [email protected] and I will put you on my email list to notify you when the site gets started. Yes Dan, Windy was a VIP A-hole...

It was great to see your posts.

Hello all. I just discovered this website. I have a 1 hour recording of WQID from July of 1976, recorded while I was stationed at Keesler A.F.B. I have posted it on my website. Please go to http://aa6rr.info and follow the directions to download it. It is 60 MB in size and features Mickey Coulter. Enjoy ! Mike H.

Russ..did you ever know Dave Lyons??

Hey Z-100....I worked with a Dave Lyons in the early 80's at WKMX Enterprise, AL
He wasn't there too long. Reckon it is the same Dave? Nice guy

I know Dave Lyons, because I'm him. Yes, I worked at KMX in '82 and SL-100 83-86, and I also did some consulting for WQID in, I think, '88. Drop me a PM and let me know who you are.
