Looks like Mark Davis has a new job

This radio listener agrees with the radio pros that it would be much better to keep the branding "NewsTalk 660 K-Sky". As a news talk consumer, I really dislike that "The Answer" nonsense. I can't imagine what group that plays well with but I doubt that it is this station's target audience. It's too much like keeping the format, but changing the branding of an AC station to "Good Music 104.1". With nothing else to go on but the name, If I'm looking for AC, I'm going to rush right by that one like the plague.

All that aside, it's very good news. I repeat what I said in the "leaving WBAP" thread: My best to Mark.

I have some old KSKY transcription discs from the early 1950s in my collection. They aren't air checks or any sort of on-air programing but rather musical recordings of a local band. My guess is that the band perhaps either performed on KSKY or contracted with the station to use their recording facilities to make the discs as samples - back in the day when radio stations were one of the few places in most towns that actually had decent recording facilities. Anyhow, the label on the discs says RECORDED BY KSKY "Your SKY Station" DALLAS It also has all of the standard fields and check boxes that such radio station labels of the era typically had - in/out (i.e., center verses edge start) vertical/lateral, 78/33 1/3. The outer edge of the label has two bands of strobe lines - one for 78 rpm the other for 33 1/3 rpm. My guess is this was primarily intended to make sure that the turntable in the studio was at the correct speed when the disc was being cut more than it was for checking the playback turntable - but that is just a guess on my part.

Anyhow, I think "Your SKY Station" sounds rather cool - and was presumably a reference to the fact that its studios were in the penthouse of the Stoneleigh Hotel. Of course, if they used that today, it would probably cause modern audiences to scratch their heads and go "what??" - sort of like I did when I first read about "The Answer."

I find the following passage from the DFW.com article interesting. It quotes Salem regional VP John Peroyea:

""The last time [Davis] was on Limbaugh was last Tuesday, and on Wednesday, a listener called Limbaugh to talk about Mark Davis," Peroyea says. "Rush sent me a copy of the air check and said, 'Use it for promos.' It was his way of honoring Mark, because the [listener] was very complimentary of Limbaugh using Mark as a replacement.""

(quote at: http://www.dfw.com/2012/05/27/629066/mark-davis-returning-to-dfw-radio.html )

It is definitely an honor for Mark that Rush would do something like that. Obviously Rush has a high opinion of him - otherwise, there is no way he would allow him to be a fill in host.

But let's look at it from a different perspective as well. Rush is allowing a clip of his program to be used to promote a program that will compete directly against his own affiliate. Under normal circumstances, I would find that to be a little odd and perhaps unfair to the affiliate. But, in this case, I wonder if it is an intentional and direct slam at Cumulus. If so, Cumulus certainly deserves it given its behavior towards Rush these past several months.

I am guessing that Rush is not particularly pleased with the way that Cumulus has promoted the Huckabee program by means of attacking him - and I have zero doubt that he is thoroughly disgusted by the way Cumulus has played tag-team with Media Matters' attempt to silence Rush through its intimidation campaign against his advertisers so as to help give its Huckabee program a cheap advantage.

What I am wondering is, when WBAP's contract with Rush expires, if Rush will have already found a replacement affiliate and Cumulus/WBAP will not even get a chance to keep the program at any price. Rush has already refused to take back advertisers who had joined the boycott and subsequently begged to come back. Why would he not take a similar attitude towards Cumulus - especially given that only 38 of his 600 affiliates are on Cumulus owned stations?

Now, of course, some of those Cumulus stations are in major markets and are dominant stations. But WHY are they dominant? One of the reasons is, of course, the stations carry The Rush Limbaugh Program. If Rush were to move his show to a rival station, that new station would immediately become a major player in the market.

If Rush pulls out of WBAP, what other program are they going to put in that time slot that will draw anywhere near the listenership? If they think Huckabee is going to be able to do it - they are out of their minds. And, not only that, Cumulus has already weakened its lead-in audience to Rush's time slot by replacing Mark with the less capable Ben Ferguson. And by the time their contract with Rush expires, whenever that is, given Cumulus's track record, it will have further weakened WBAP as its on air-talent get the same treatment that Mark did when their contracts come up for renewal.

If this were to happen tomorrow, Cumulus would probably welcome it as they apparently think that Huckabee is god's gift to broadcasting. But, over time, when the ratings of the thing have not gained traction - well, Cumulus may have a hate-on for Rush, but his program does make its affiliates a lot of money. If it didn't, others would have abandoned the show years ago given the fees Rush charges. In the end, money talks. They might not be so thrilled about losing Rush if it becomes obvious that Huckabee is not going to replace the lost revenue.

What I find interesting about the DFW.com quote is that apparently Rush knows who John Peroyea is. Perhaps Peroyea has worked with him in the past. Perhaps Rush specifically researched who Mark's new boss was going to be and initiated contact. Or could it be that Rush perhaps has already had feelers out with Peroyea about the possibility of a future move to KSKY? Would Salem even be open to such a possibility given that Rush competes against their own syndicated programing? Do any of Salem's other talk stations carry Rush?

Anyhow, just a bit of curiosity and speculation on my part. #CumulusFail

I had the same thought when I read that story. It also tells me Mark is probably closer to Rush than other fill-in hosts. I would not be surprised to see Rush leave Cumulus stations when his deal is up. In part because I think they won't pay the rights fee and partly because Rush doesn't like Cumulus.

Yeah. And when Cumulus no longer has Rush on its former ABC/Citadel stations and Huckabee takes the time slot, perhaps when Huckabee goes on vacation they can have Chris Krok - who they seem to think is a really great talk show host -fill in for Huckabee the way that Mark fills in for Rush! Wow. What a spectacular train wreck that would make. #CumulusFail

I am curious as to what others here think of KSKY's rebranding of itself as "The Answer."

No matter what it calls itself...if no one cares for the programming it's inconsequential.

Personally, I'd work on the programming first and rebrand after the momentum increases ( assuming it will ). ;D

DD...Just curious. What would you do to improve the programming?

"...'The Answer?' What the hell was the question?"--Mike Shannon

How about:

"What is the only DFW Radio Station that will provide Local, Honest, and Consistent Debate for North Texans in the closing months before the most important National Election since the Civil War?"

Or this one:

"What DFW Talk Radio Station is currently run by a real Broadcaster who realizes that success begins and ends with the On-Air Product?"

And finally, (My favorite):

"What DFW Radio Station is owned by a Corporation who believes that Radio's true customer is the Listener, not a Wall Street Stock Analyst?"

If I didnt know any better, JonDavidVox might be angling for some imaging work on the new station, I kid, I kid...;)

That all being said, I say congrats to mark, he and I have different political views on what can make this country great, but I respect his right to it! I hope KSKY gives him the credit and respect his deserves...

Also JD, I dug this weekends Coast To Coast Men In Black interview...you always dig up the coolest guest..

"The Answer" sounds more like a religious station to me, like "The Word".

LOL! :D

That has to be the BEST comment I've ever read on this board.

But ditto, "The Answer" Sounds like a religious station's name.

Chris....

Thanks for listening to my dear friend....John B. Wells, on Coast to Coast AM Weekends.

John is a superb broadcaster who's legendary voice-work has transformed our industry, and is the Weekend host of one of the great all-night broadcasts ever.

He was the one who (truly) deserves your congratulations for bagging the Men In Black interview.

Medved is not an audience builder, he's just a "name"...way too argumentative and overconfident. His air time is a lead-in to afternoon drive you need someone that can command an audience. But it isn't Medved.

Dennis Miller is one "crazy cat" and kinda reminds me of the "sterno bum that injested pickles between blood donations"....?? In other words the guy doesn't speak to his audience he's busy making inside jokes and manipulating the english language...very tiring to listen to.

That's the starter..for my changes. ;D

YES!!! That was one of the best summations of Dennis Miller I have read. Thank you!

Before we know it KSKY will be the new WBAP :D

The next step should be doing anything they can to get a class c fm simulcast. The low power slots on now are a joke. 99.9 in fw has been off since the storm 5/25 and I'm sure they don't even know it. :-\
