LOPEZ PLEASE GIVE CONAN A BIG "THANK YOU" CHRISTMAS PRESENT

According to the press release Turner released (published on TV By The Number), it stated these ratings notes about Lopez Tonight:

Two weeks into the new season, the show has averaged 392,000 adults 18-34, an increase of 87% compared to the four weeks leading up to the new season

So wait a second, before Conan was on TBS, Lopez only averaged ~50,000 adults 18-34 at his 11PM slot??? That's EXTREMELY low, even for cable. And I believe that the four weeks leading up to the new season HAD to have included some new episodes.

Math is hard. :)

It would seem that LOPEZ was averaging roughly 210,000 viewers pre-Conan. The new total of 392,000 is 87% more than 210,000.

210,000 X 1.87 = 392,000

Network execs can play/twist/portray/manipulate numbers in countless ways, so there are always ways to make any growth sound amazing. I am presuming that the 392K "average" is a per-show average of the 8 episodes over the past two weeks. The 210K "average" would be for the previous four weeks (16 shows), which likely did have some reruns.

Of course, TBS could be playing with numbers and saying that 392,000 distinct people watched at least 10 minutes of any one episode during the two-week period. Networks play that game when they tally up big event ratings, which is how they can squeal that 100M people watched Program X. 100M people aren't watching the whole show, they just tune in for at least 10 minutes.

Unless George Lopez had a decent pre-nup, there likely won't be many pricey XMAS gifts for anyone this season.

Sorry, my bad!
I guess my 430 on the Math portion of the SAT really shows!

I would say that Lopez's performance HAS to come from the first few mins. of the presentation from Conan viewers. I, myself, do let it run into Lopez Tonight after Conan until I clumsily try to find the remote ;)

I read where Conan's audience declined sharply after his first show. So this news is interesting that while Conan's program is slipping in the ratings, Lopez's ratings are going up. However when you hardly have an audience to begin with, I guess up is the only way to go.

Conan mentioned getting back to the Boston area for part of the holiday period last night. My questions about that:

1- What time does he tape the show at?
2- His show is new on TBS tonight. Did he tape two episodes yesterday?

It could be that the 11PM hour on TBS is cursed.

Apparently, the show's beating its late night competition in 18-49. (which shouldn't be a surprise with a median age of 30)

The biggest hit, however, isn't Letterman or Leno, it's Comedy Central's combo of Stewart and Colbert, which took a direct hit in audience decline since Conan hit the air. The worse thing is that this coincided with the end of the midterm election season, which is also when audience tends to decline to their shows.

Well as long as the show shows a profit, TBS will sit on it as long as they can. Even a ratings poor Conan gives them valuable publicity. That is the nice thing about cable you're rating isn't as important as the $$$$$$$$$$

That is expected with any new show. (Palin's show took a bigger hit than Conan did on the second episode... just noting.) TBS is in fact, extremely happy with the ratings that Conan is pulling in, plus it's pulling in the demo that they wanted.

1. The show tapes around 5-6P (Eastern)
2. Yes, he did tape two shows on Wednesday (one for Wednesday's airing, the second for Thursday)
