I just discovered this tune through AAA this week. I've been digging it too.
I think you're probably right about it having a future at CHR, especially in this post-Gotye era of melodic alternative with rhythm. Add to that the anti-"self-royalty" lyrics, countering what's been so dominant at Top 40 in recent years, plus the fact that she's only 16. And I think you've got the ingredients for a Top 40 left-field hit.
BTW, I don't know if you saw this, but Billboard posted this article about the song, comparing it to other female acts whose debut blasted onto Alternative then became crossover Pop successes. "Royals" certainly has a strong pedigree.
I'm not a big fan of this, but it's selling REALLY well given that it's only gotten Alternative play so far, and the artist is young, so I think CHR crossover is definite for this one, especially b/c it got a bunch of unsolicited Hot AC adds today
It sounds like MIA "Paper Planes", which was a quick hit, and its selling pretty well. As much as I HATE this track, I think it will be a quick hit at CHR.
There's a huge ad for it on AllAccess in the CHR section, and it's #12 on ITunes
I really don't like it at all either, but crossover success paves the way for other tracks by other Alternative artists to follow, so pop stations can't use the excuse that an Alt. track doesn't "fit" with their playlist
I bought the song but I'm somewhat indifferent to it. Regardless, its nice to hear someone singing against the Escalades, the bling, the desire that everyone allegedly has to enjoy their 15 minutes of fame.
I first heard this on wpkx-fm the peak in westchester ny. It is one of favorite songs great sound and beat. Now its playing on z100 here in nyc. I think it has potential to be a hit.
