Loren Owens - WPEN

Just wondering how many people remember Loren Owens from his days in Philly on 95-WPEN? When the switch was made to oldies, he hosted mornings with Brandon Brooks during news. It was a straight ahead morning show with music, news every 20 minutes, and lots of humorous bits.

I can't remember how long he was on here before he went to WROR in Boston. Apparently he has been doing very well up there.

He was on their emergency fill-in tape, for when something went wrong at the studio (I think the engineer ran it from the transmitter site) which I seem to recall aired at least once long after he'd left.

Loren Owens morning show on 95PEN was very entertaining, lots of quick comedy between songs, part of a full lineup of talent carefully researched & brought in from markets around the country in 1975. He left the station fairly soon & was replaced by Geoff Fox. I've heard Loren & Wally over the years and he certainly found his niche in that Boston morning team that has done oldies, country & classic hits over the years.

After Dr. Don Rose, Loren Owens was probably the best at delivering one-liners throughout his show. That was a great morning show..He would always bust on Camden and Mayor Angelo "Boom Boom" Erichetti, there was also the farm report as well. Original newsman on his morning show was John "Wellington" Winters, then came Brandon "Barrett" Brooks. But the best of the 95-PEN newscastes was Bruce "Eric" Smallwood in the afternoons.

There was a William "Wellington" Cole that you may be confusing this name with (who incidentally was really Mumia Abu Jamal).

HGN- You are right...but there was a newscaster with Loren Owens named John Winters, but can't remember what middle name he used back then.

He was definitely John Wellington Winters. Maybe they had a pair of Wellingtons.

I think Loren was at the station for 2 years, and was replaced in the morning when they moved Geoff Fox from evenings to mornings. Owens was also the image voice on all the promos...the way they used to use Morgan at KHJ...AM drive and promo voice.

Bruce "Eric" Smallwood would make a big emphasis on the word Thunder in thunder showers, then he started to add it to all forcasts, in the winter there was a chance for THUNDER flurries! Where did Bruce go? I agree he was one of the best radio newscasters, I can't think of anyone better right now.

John Winters also worked at WIFI-92, 1974 to maybe 1976. I have an aircheck of him with Steve Shotgun Kelly in November, 1974. He had a great voice and killer delivery.

Bruce Smallwood passed away in the middle '80s, I believe to lung cancer. I lastly heard him anchoring on Mutual, using the name Eric Smallwood, with a very straight-forward style of delivery.
