Lores Rizkalla Coming to KTRH

Just heard on KTRH that in October Lores Rizkalla will be on KTRH Sundays 2pm to 4pm. Who is she?

I was going to start a thread about this soon, but ya beat me to it.

From what I know, she's coming from Salem's KRLA 870 in L.A. (Sunday 1-hr. weekly show) to KTRH...for another Sunday weekly show.

I heard her a couple of nights ago giving "coverage" of Ike.
IMO, she sounded unprepared, paused for up to 10-sec's at a time so she could find links to baby pictures, and kept callers on waaay too long to the point it was just dragging on.

Her main topic was getting kids' opinion on Ike - something, granted, was a little different, that caught my attention. But the way she handled it formatic-wise and just an overall presentation led me to just say, " :p"

Not to knock on her skills, as I only heard her for about an hour, but in the hour I did hear, it did not appear to be anything worth listening to, of course, IMO.

...I could be wrong. This is just my 2 c.

I wonder if her pauses have anything to do with the fact that she's never been in a city dealing with hurricane stuff?

I actually thought she like a good addition to the KTRH staff, certainly better than some of the others on that station.

Who the hell is Lores Rizkalla? Let's go to the video tape.

She's a Los Angeles talker who does a show on KLRA. Here's a link to a bunch of YouTube videos featuring her:

If you need or want more info, here's a link to her website:

Her home page is not complete. Ignore that "Page Not Found" notice, and go on to the various links on the left side of the page.

From what little I've seen so far, she seems to come from the conservative side of the aisle, but not exclusively, and I applaud her for that. I share many of her views. I look forward to hearing her on KTRH.

She's not Muslim, but she is of Egyptian descent. I'm guessing KTRH is putting her on to cater to the huge middle-eastern population in the Houston market.

Not very smart, IMO. Putting somone who's brand new to Houston on host duty for a talk show about Hurricane Ike. Is the first time we have heard her on the air in Houston? Would rather have someone who knows the city instead of someone who keeps saying "How happy she is to be here from LA."

I don't think she will actually be "here". CC is able to put its talkers on the air from anywhere. They do it all the time. She's probably going to do her Houston show from the CC station she works at in L-A.

Dude, thanks for the definition of syndication, but that's not what we're talking about here. She said her husband is a school teacher at Katy ISD. It sounded like they moved here recently.

I listened to her a little bit by accident last week. Michael Garfield was working night shifts last week and I like him.
So I was surprised to turn on the radio one night and hear this woman instead.

After listening for about an hour I thought: Why is this woman hosting a radio talk show? Sing-songy voice, amateurish delivery, air-headed comments. Surely we have better local talk talent in town.

I think that Michael Berry likes to do strange programming moves so that people will talk about him - because no one ever talks about the Michael Berry show.

You sir, have made me, as they say, "LOL." Hard.

Oops. I missed that part

I missed the part about her husband teaching at Katy ISD. Thanks for clarifying that.

I like her generally conservative slant on things, but based on those YouTube video clips, I have to ask how in God's name does someone as amateurish as she get a job on a major market radio station? She's 39 years old but she looks and sounds like someone just out of high school.

Andy Warhol was only half right. He said sooner or later everybody will be famous for 15 minutes. To that he could have added, everybody will also get a talk show.

Michael Berry on his show gave information about Lores Rizkalla and said that she moved to Houston because her husband moved here, that he thought she was a great talent (or something similar) and that KTRH was going to try to find more and more ways to use her, starting with the hurricane coverage. Michael Berry did say, however, that she was new to town, would not know how to pronounce many of our area streets (specifically asking for listeners not to give her a hard time if she mispronounced Kuykendahl) and admitting that she would not know much about the geography or people of our city in talking about the hurricane, but that listeners should just give her a break.

I can remember when broadcasting background and skills, knowing something about the market, it's people, geography and local pronunciations were REQUIRED to get a job in a major market. I guess knowing what you're talking about isn't important anymore.

Michael Berry is living proof that anybody can walk in off the street and get a job in radio. Now he's extending that privilege to this woman from Los Angeles.

I gotta tell you. Watching this wonderful business decay and fall apart this way is painful. Very painful.

Why should WE give HER a break? I think Michael Berry has it bass ackwards. She is there to entertain US, the listener.
It's not our job to give her a break. The fourth largest city in the United States is not a training ground for radio talk show hosts. When they get on the air here, they should be the cream of the crop.

Michael Berry needs to give us the very best talk talent in Houston and Lores Rizkalla is not it. And ... I don't appreciate him putting a rookie from out-of-town on the city's largest news/talk station during a time of crisis in our city when up-to-the-minute information delivered by someone who knew what they were talking about was crucial. Instead we got someone who was "so happy to be here in Houston and everyone is SOOOO nice!"

KTRH should be a shining example of the best talent in news and talk radio. Instead, it's Berry's little petrie dish.

I might be more tolerant of the situation if KTRH were a very small station or even a college station. But for a big Clear Channel radio station to operate this way in a major market, well it's just embarrassing. And I honestly don't know how Berry gets away with it. It's like he's arrogantly thumbing his nose at the listeners and if you don't like it, change the station.

Well guess what?
I have.

And here we are talking about Michael Berry again. I'll bet he just loves this.
Didn't he start out at Clear Channel as a customer purchasing a brokered show to promote his real estate business?
