Los Angeles Regional Talkers Forum 2011 - Oct 20

Is anyone thinking of going to this event - put on by the Los Angeles Press Club?

Los Angeles Regional Talkers Forum 2011 - on October 20 at 4773 Hollywood Blvd., in Los Angeles

http://www.talkers.com/LARTF

I would be interested in attending.

"Talk host number one, why do you hate Obama?"

"Talk host number two, do you hate Obama more than Talk host #1 and how do you differntiate your hate from theirs?"

"Talk host 3, post Obama, who are you hating and why?"

Leykis on "The State of So Cal Talk Radio"? I guess since he's soon to be in a state of not being contractually paid to do anything is starting to sink in. Tom better make a "new normal" name for himself right quick because he might just be stuck with a web radio biz and no where to go.

A discussion panel with Don Martin and Jack Silver? Will they both be able to answer the first natural question of "How can each of you remain in your positions while single handedly destroying the medium in which you represent?" I suspect no one will bring this up in the Q&A session, not after all those Brooklyn Water Bagel Company sammiches.

Handel with the keynote is pretty appropriate. He only has 15 minutes so it's likely he won't drop enough racial epithets to completely clear the room. It'll be a close finish to the wire though.

Stephanie Miller will be available during the last segment for the important Republican bashing needs while ignoring that the issues that face So Cal in her world is no one listens to KTLK 1150.

Admission is free to working media and press????? How about if you're not working in the industry anymore?

My main questions would be about the lack of developing talent anymore. I think KFI did a good job with Bill Carroll in place of Dr. Laura (That's just here in LA, what about the other markets she was on?), but radio still can't replace Howard Stern. And who is going to replace Rush Limbaugh when he leaves the airways?

Would be interesting to take part.

Does Howard Stern have much of an audiance on Satelite? Seems like he was replaced. It looks like the people at this event do have some industry credibility.

Did anyone go from here, and care to share some thoughts?

My guess is that Leykis is going to start up a Shoutcast station to stream his show, offer his show as a podcast and/or try to syndicate it to stations around the country. Will it work? Not really, because his show depended on those listener phone calls and an internet show may not bring the same call volume. Syndicated might not work for him either because the "hot talk" format has disappeared and his show would have no appeal to the audience listening to KFI, for example. Plus, web radio has no advertising dollars attached to it, unless he goes subscription based.

Leykis has already created his own network with New Normal. All he has to do is plug himself in once his contract runs out. He has maintained his fan base via New Normal, Facebook and his website and he pops up in the media from time to time just to remind everyone that he is still with us.

Most likely he will take a route similar to what Heidi and Frank are doing. They stream a live 2-hour program everyday. The live stream is free to anyone who wishes to listen and they take live calls (lots of them). VIPs pay something like $5 a month or $50 annualy and have access to live streaming video and on demand listening and other exclusive content. Frank has been building out his Toadhop Network with shows from other people (Gina & Randy of the Pretty Good Podcast, 2 Guys and a Mic, Huff & Stapes and others) and should have 24 hours of continuous programming very soon, if not already. He has some other major things coming in the very near future which should help to increase the visibility of the H&F show locally.

With Tom's fanbase and his financial resources he could easily do something similar, and as I pointed out, has already laid the groundwork for it. I would imagine that an un-censored Leykis show that doesn't have to kowtow to the FCC or some stodgy media behemoth can and will be quite succesful (provided he still has a voice by then).

With Dean Edel off the air (guess he still has commentary spots) Lykus represents the liberaltarian point of view, which gets a good demographic.
