Losing An Affiliate for America's Best Music

Thanks for doing that @publisher ! If you could share those at some point I would be grateful. I happened to listen on the day they announced it and made plans to start recording tonight but their stream is down. I get a preroll ad and then nothing, Hope it comes back before Christmas is over. Happy Holidays to you as well!
I had an uncle who recorded his ABM station, back in the days when it wasn't called that. His daughter was women's basketball coach at a major university and was about my age and she didn't want to hear his music in the car.

Here is over nine hours captured from WNAM on Christmas Day and early early Dec. 26 after the midnight (central) switch back to the regular playlist. Some good promos airing at 03:30 each hour about the sign of the station on Dec. 31.

The final 2:00AM-3:00AM clip has the rare appearance of the "filler track" at the top of the hour after the playlist cuts out about 10 seconds too early. The track is "Georgia" by Wes Montgomery and has been used by WW1 for several years to fill the gaps. There have been a handful of others used through the years since I've been listening to this format, including "Wave" by Antonio Carlos Jobim and "Corcovado" by Charlie Byrd.

andyfan30 asked for the link to the "vintage" WW1 AM Only and ABM airchecks from the mid 90s to 2010, include about 90 minutes of KKJL San Luis Obispo. They can be found here. If that link does not work, go to Facebook and search for The Transtar WW1 Dial Global Radio Refugees group. It's a public page and there is a link a couple of posts down from the top that will take you to this awesome content. It's in a shared Google Drive folder.

From these airchecks, one can discern the original sound of AM Only shifted in the late 90s to include more modern pop and then again in the early-mid 2000s to take pretty much the form of the current playlist.

Happy New Year and hail and farewell, WNAM!

I remember changes in 2001. Certain songs had been added that I didn't think belonged there. And the liners had changed to reflect the changes.

Actually, when Timeless Classics became Timeless Favorites, they took advantage of the situation, or at least it seemed like they did. There was a definite shift when WW1 bought the Jones formats and hired Carl Hampton. But then songs started being added that hadn't been there before, and there were real changes around the time they let the DJs go. I don't think some of those songs added in that last change are still there, or at least they weren't there the few times I listened. WIOZ doesn't stream but I hear it on the way to and from the beach.

The breaks on ABM are all options, you dont have to take any of them, even TOH if you don't want to.

The breaks during the hour are all floating, but exact lengths.

The top of the hour break is either 3:30 or 6... you can take either length.

Each break is filled with exact timed songs

Our newscast at TOH was 75 seconds (60 sec plus commercial) and we didn't do 15 second commercials, so we'd fill out that break with an ID for the translator. At the top of the hour, John Gleason would ID us as "Bringing back the memories with the music you grew up with on Classy 1400 AM and 94.5 FM is WKBI Saint Marys" and then at 05:45, I'd id the translator with this:

This picture from fybush.com is the AM studio. All satellite, no local jocks except for ME doing the VT'd Sunday polka show! The B 94 studio was across the hall in the production room for the cluster. Left half of console was production , right half of the console was B94. And yes, if youre thinking what I know you're thinking.. at least once, someone came running down the hall frantically waving their arms because I'd been cutting a commercial over the music.

P.S It's real 24K Gold plating

Most affiliates I listened to did break for news. Sometimes they would have a song at :30 and it would happen more often at :50.

I've never heard a song at :20 or :40. Sooner or later even the national commercials have to air in order to pay for it.

@publisher I, too am recording the stream.

I caught roughly the same timeframe as you (after a couple false starts due to technical glitches, I started at 9 PM on the 26th, and I sort of just let it go. I'm in almost 48 hours (!!) so far.

Why? Well, it takes next to no space and I've got plenty of bandwidth, so I see no reason to attempt to capture WNAM's last week in its entirety as a compete record of its sound.

I'm going to try to see if I can let it go until the 31st, but I may need to restart it at least once if it goes down for any reason.

*new post for clarity*

I'm listening to the non-holiday playlist a bit, and I have to say, it's interesting. Basically a little bit of everything from the 50s all the way up to the 80s.

I was listening to WNAM in the car this afternoon (California Time) and I heard Jimmy Cliff's version of "I Can See Clearly Now." (1993, the newest song I've personally heard on their playlist)....RIP Jimmy Cliff (died last month).

I think the local AMs (what's left of them, anyway) would sound better with this format versus whatever it is they have (also a Westwood One format, I think). Indeed, at least one of them (KXBX 1270, which is pretty much the last one standing now) was a MOYL affiliate for a number of years during the early to mid 2000s. I'm not sure when they flipped to their current format, but it was probably sometime between 2009 and 2014.

you want the last remaining am to die an even quicker death then eh?

I was to going to say that MeTVmusic is a great alternative to ABM. But with the end of KMEE Palm Springs, and now down to a few affiliates....maybe not.

Good point.

Unfortunately, I don't think any format will save them at this point, which is sad.

There's no reason why my station can't do it, though! I figure I can run my Part 15 station (with a fully licensed stream via Live365) for under $200/month, and since I don't have ratings, sell ad spots or answer to corporate bean counters, I can play whatever music I want (within reason; I think the licensing through Live365 restricts what I can do somewhat).

I thought that was just a frequency swap, and KMEE wasn't going away, just to a different dial position?

EDIT: Just read up a bit. I think I figured it out. KMEE isn't going away, but will be flipping to a new format. I guess MeTV FM wasn't the hit we thought it might be?

Speaking of a Part 15 network. Someone in Texas is doing just that!

So, I’m 41 and have been a standards/Soft AC listener for most of my life, The pattern I’m seeing is we’re losing a good station about every 2 / 2.5 years. Since I’ve been listening we lost…WJAS…KJUL…KCEE…KAAM…KBVA in Bella Vista Arkansas was locally programmed and fantastic before they were bought out and air a classic hits format now…WDEA flipped to a classic hits format instead of picking up ABM and now we’re about to lose WNAM…I’ll be streaming Gold Rush Radio out of Alaska but it’s getting harder and harder to find a station that primarily plays just music and TOH news. Personally, I thought the Adult Standards format that Local Radio Networks (LRN) aired was far superior to ABM, especially because they played a good bit of 50s and 60s instrumentals, but they recently killed off that format, which forced WDEA’s hand.

It would be nice if LRN or Westwood One just allowed you to stream the format. It also boggles my mind that this format with songs from the 50s to early 90s is not on Sirius/XM. One thing I’m glad I did, was keep a detailed playlist of WDEA for about a month before they flipped formats…this allowed me to download most of the LRN standards format and download them onto my phone so if this format ever does completely fall off I’ll be able to stream the classics on my phone. It turned out to be close to 1,000 different songs including the seldom heard 1951 version of “Because of You” by Tony Bennett, 1945’s “Rum & Cola-Cola” by the Andrews Sisters, all the way to more recent songs such as “All I have” by Beth Neilsen Chapman.

There hasn't been a hit soft AC format in decades. Many years ago, perhaps around 2010, a sponsor of this message board was "Timeless Cool", a syndicated format that was meant to be an evolution of soft AC with some elements of smooth jazz. I quite liked it, but it flopped.

Me too! I grew up listening to oldies, and discovered big band when I listened to my grandparents' record collection.

I'll check it out.

Agreed! MOYL has a stream, I know. Why ABM doesn't is beyond me. It's not like it's proprietary or anything.

Ooo, would you be willing to share this?

I have many lists of my own, but I'm always looking to add more because I'm hoping to create a similar format for my Part 15 station.
