when i was in south carolina around the summer of 1999 there was a station broadcasting just south of myrtle beach called the asylum does anyone have any infomation about it, & if you're asking it sounded like a mix of KZQ & Hampton road's MAX FM
I bet you are "Kin" to long time newsman Ralph Smith of WDSL Mocksville ..WBUY Lexington fame...
I know the exact dates on this. January 1999 is when it signed on. Cool 104.9 took rhythmic oldies, so they chose rock (as if Myrtle beach needed yet another one of those stations). In June 2000 a Sun News reporter mourned the loss of Asylum, which switched to a satellite format. I heard this format the next time I went to the beach, and a few years later a station where I lived did the same thing. It was called "Unforgettable Favorites". I'll bet it did very well with Brunswick County's retired population. Someone wrote a letter to the editor praising the station after Joy 92 dropped easy listening, but before Easy 105.9 picked it up.radiodxrichmond said:You sure it was to the south or to the north?
There was a station in Brunswick Co., NC on 93.5/WDZD called the asylum. That's midway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. It had a pretty tough time reaching Myrtle Beach proper...and considering the fact that KZQ was the rock juggernaut, they only lasted two or three years as active rock. Right before they flipped, I think they called themselves Z-93.5 or something like that. I think they flipped to AC in 2001 or 2002, then flipped to spanish in 04 or 05.

Actually, I'm distant kin to a Ralph Smith. He's long gone, but he has a brother, Arthur, still living. While never a newsman, this Ralph Smith once teamed with musician Tommy Faile as "The Counselors of the Airwaves".
Not that any of those "famous" Smiths claim me as their kinfolk, but I've quite enjoyed their work through the years.

Wow, this thread has, if you will pardon the expression, gone off "chasing rabbits". (Sorry, I couldn't resist!!) Seriously, I believe Bunny Bread is a franchise brand, and it was indeed baked and marketed by its local franchisee Bost Bakery for many years. I think that is where the Bost/Bunny connection comes in. I don't remember when, but years later the Bunny Bread franchise for this area ended up with the Flowers Baking Company. Thats when the Bost branded bread started showing up in area stores. I don't recall seeing any in the upstate area in years. Is Bost Bakery still around?
I remember the Arthur Smith Commercials for Bunny/Bost very well. One that I particularly liked was for the "Bunny Country Grain" Bread. It showed Tommy Faile looking up in the sky and saying "country rain, why theres not a cloud in the sky" and then Ralph Smith telling him "you're more aggravating than a loose hoe handle".
