Lots of changes in Charleston

The Charleston media market has gone thru lots of changes over the past few weeks, and a few more have been made. WIOP (95.9), has changed their imaging from FM 95.9 to 95.9 IOP, and have added a new voice guy, replacing John Driscoll (the guy before) with another guy.

WSPO (1390/99.3) has dropped Imus in the Morning after less than six months, and now airs Steve Czaban every morning from 6-10. They also dropped Dan Patrick, and now air Tim Brando live from 10am-1pm, and a new show called Y'all Sports Daily on Tuesday-Friday from 1-3pm. They air a local show with the same people that do the House Divided from 1-3pm on Mondays.

WCBD-DT (CW) has finally been added to DirecTV, after being on for four years. It airs on Channel 3 on DirecTV, between WCBD on 2 and WCIV on 4.

Satellite and cable companies are way behind on catching up with the newer secondary channels that digital TV can provide across the country. For satellite it is tough to provide for the entire country. On cable it seems that they should be able to catch up if they really want to do so which if they think about it more local programing means more viewers.

With the bandwidth limitations until the satellite companies move completely to MPEG4 even with both Dish and Direct having new birds up it will be a few years till they add the sub channels... CC1

Stations east of the Mississippi are getting rid of the W, while stations west of the Mississippi are getting rid of the K. I wonder if that is a gradual elimination of the distinction between east and west.

...also ABC NEWS 4/WCIV is now streaming live newscast on its website. After all the years, I finally get to watch the news in Chucktown from ATL. Im shocked LIVE 5 NEWS/WCSC still doesn't stream.

That is indeed shocking, b/c isn't Channel 4 owned by Barrington and aren't they still in 3rd (or 4th) place in local news? Please correct me if I'm wrong...

WCIV is still a distant #3 in most of their newscasts, even with the best sportscasters in town, Scott Eisberg and John Nugent, and good weather reports. WCSC dominates the other stations. Albritton actually owns Channel 4, but they put less money into it than any of their other stations.

The problem is that they can't get any stablity going in the morning. They have the best main anchor team in town, IMO (better than Bill and Debi's banter) but in the past decade, they've probably gone thru five or six morning news and weather anchors.

Patrice Smith was the morning anchor forever, then she got moved to weekends and retired. They tried Mike Hiott with her, and that didn't work. Angela May came on, and just when they were starting to make a dent at the other stations, she left. Erin Colgan (formerly at WCSC) was on for a while, but she left.

Now they have Jon Bruce or Evan Kelly and Laura Harris anchoring the morning news. At least, with Dave Williams, they found a good meteorologist. Until he came, they literally had a new morning weatherperson every 6-9 months. None of them were that good. Erin Coakley went to Miami, but the others didn't really last.

I've been watching channel 4 news for the past 7 years. I use to watch channel 2 but for some unknown reason I switched to channel 4. I'll still glance at channel 2 but for no more than 2 or 3 minutes or if its the weekend and a game is running over on channel 4. Also with channel 4 their top story (if theres nothing big happening) is different from channels 2 and 5. Channel 4's top story is usually something you'll hear reported on channel 2 & 5 about 5 to 6 minutes into their newscast.

Any whereabouts on Renee Williams, Angela May, Sarah Demarco, & Erin Colgan? Erin left WCSC/WTAT cause her husband is in the military and got transferred I wonder if thats why she left WCIV.

Are all three stations broadcasting in HD? I know that Live 5 News does and it looks real sharp. Not sure about the other two News 2 and 4. I am guessing News 2 would be in HD as the General Media station here in Myrtle Beach WBTW News 13 has their newscasts in HD. Getting back to Charleston seems as Live 5 News has always been the leader followed by News 2. And it shows why Live 5 is leader great anchors, weather team, reports along with great graphics and news set. ABC 4 seems to need some updating news set graphics etc. Seem to be the same for the ABC station in Myrtle Beach, WPDE 15.

Five is the only HD station. The other stations haven't shown any hint of doing it. 4, maybe. Channel 2 still doesn't carry any of their syndicated shows in HD.

Four at least shows Ellen, ET and Regis in HD. Erin Colgan has her own photography studio now. Angela May does those Housecalls Roper updates on all the stations, that air almost every day. Sarah DeMarco now works at a high-tech firm (she was tired of doing crime), and Renee Williams left to Atlanta to go to some type of agency.

Charleston has a large amount of reporters who head to other ventures after going there. Unless you're one of the mainstays, you either take a job at a local firm or move up.

Interesting that News 2 isn't in HD as its owned by General Media. Seems like they would be. General Media must be putting more money into News 13 Myrtle Beach then sister station in Charleston. This as all 13 newscasts are in HD along with syndicated shows such as Oprah, Wheel of Fortune, etc... Also 13 just got brand new weather graphics and maps. Plus just about 2 years ago they got a brand new state art building. Its surprising about Charleston a top market. Only one HD with Myrtle Beach has 2 stations with newscasts in HD and being a smaller market.

There is very little difference in the size of the Charleston and Florence/Myrtle Beach TV markets---MYB/Flo is 104 and CHS is 99. Columbia, on the other hand is ranked #78 and has zero HD newscasts. GVL/SPA/ASH is ranked #36 and has 2 out of 4 newscasts HD.

Hold up now. WOLO definately broadcasts their news in HD and have for quite a while. Which is sad because most people wont notice or care. :D

There used to be a billboard on 77-south with Reg Taylor's hands pushing themselves outside of a 16:9 box.... I chuckled every time I saw that.
