Lou Reed's Birthday - WZLX plays "Rock & Roll"

at 10:07 AM on 100.7 (hmmm, pretty easy to remember), was it "Tom Collins", a good voice filling in for Carter Alan, playing The Velvet Underground "Loaded" version of "Rock & Roll."

The song is such a classic hit it should be in rotation. Ridiculous that once a year they get to play it on Lou's birthday during the day.

It is a shame that anything other than "Sweet Jane" has to have a special reason to be played (come to think of it, I haven't heard Sweet Jane in a few years either). It is even more of a shame that someone named 'Tom Collins' had to play it. Who is his wacky side-kick, Olive Another?

Nahhh, Big Al, if those lines didn't get censored in 1972 there is no reason to do it 35 years later; they just don't play hits like "Perfect Day" (a worldwide smash thanks to television and U2), "Satellite Of Love", "I Love You Suzanne" or "Dirty Boulevard" because Pink Floyd, Bob Ceegah, Aerosmith and Freebird need the additional spins.

Was a time on WZLX that The Beatles and Aerosmith had a tough time, so it just goes to show there's no logic to classic rock radio. "Rock & Roll" is such a staple.

By the way, I'm listening to an advance copy of Ian Hunter's brilliant new album that arrived today.
It's called SHRUNKEN HEADS - and one wonders why Classic Rock radio doesn't play "Cleveland Rocks" (theme to the Drew Carey show), Hunter's version of "Ships" (a big hit for Barry Manilow) or Hunter's version of "Once Bitten Twice Shy" instead of the version by the unmentionable band.

No logic to classic rock radio. These songs are popular. That's why I listen to WBOQ more than any other station - they play some awesome stuff. Just watched THE CYRKLE doing "Turn Down Day" over a friend's house, and lo and behold it was on WBOQ...what great production, what great musicians THE CYRKLE were.
WODS should add this stuff. They only toured with THE BEATLES.

Sheesh.

"Sweet Jane" (the live version) is in regular rotation on WZLX's HD-2 "Lost Classics and Deep Tracks" channel. I splurged and bought an HD Digital tuner a couple of weeks ago. ($199 - 20% off coupon = $159 plus tax).

they don't even play "Walk On The Wild Side" anymore? I wonder, if they don't, if it's becaused of the "colored girls" line...

"Walk On The Wild Side" is still in regular rotation on WBOS and WXRV. I guess programmers think it's fits more into "adult alt-rock" rather than "classic rock".

Mike 93.7 did at 5:15 today. Maybe you guys come over and give us a try sometimes.

I ended my show with it on Monday after wishing Lou a happy 65th and said I guess that means we're all getting older... but said I won't talk about that and just played the song... pretty perfect fade-out for the show. if I say so myself. Considering the usual loud punk/hardcore/garage I tend to play, maybe "Sister Ray" would have been better. Now THERE'S a song you won't hear on WZLX! :D

I'll be indulging in my sporadic show-pimping next week when I do the 7th anniversary show.
