Loud awful screeching noise on 1100

Did some overnight DXing on the AM band this morning and noticed that WTAM at one point was playing this loud screeching noise for at least 5-6 minutes at about an hour after midnight. after that, some silence before coast to coast resumed.

NRC DX test??

Are you sure it wasn't interference?

I have heard this kind of interference on 1100 when passing the WFUN (970) tower in Ashtabula. An obnoxious high-pitched tone that is evident for about two miles in any direction from the transmitter site just southwest of the 90/11 intersection. Glad I didn't hear this particular noise though.

Rogers Radio in Canada runs a Saturday night "party" show that runs on all 7 of their Adult Hits formatted "Jack" stations. An awful screech was eminating in place of what one would assume to be "Safety Dance" or whatever else stands for party music on the Jack stations N of the border. The screeching sounds continued for easily half an hour but the liners, legal IDs, local ads etc. sounded just fine on both of the Vancouver and Victoria outlets. Suddenly all audio just stopped...45 -60 seconds of dead air, then regular weekend programming started with just jockless songs and spots. This was on the Vancouver outlet. The screech continued on the Victoria outlet for another 10 minutes, then much the same- dead silence, then regular locally generated automated programming. I assume from this evidence there was something very funky going on with the nationwide feed. Maybe something similar happened on the feed that you heard as well?

It was just a clip of Mark Levin getting upset!

I once heard Mark on WLS and KDXU at the same time with both signals coming in on my radio at the same time but a bit of a delay.. sounded like he was arguing with himself and was getting quite worked up. I thought to myself,. "That man is going to stroke out on air on day!"

Not surprised as a slowly dying industry (AM and FM radio) has cut engineering staff dramatically and the people left often have to keep track of a dozen or more stations.

I heard it too.. I recently also heard a 1khz tone for several minutes and their usual dead air episodes continue. WTAM is really a joke for such a powerful station.
