In today's Wilmington News Journal:

Radio's Allan Loudell moving to WDEL after 18 years at WILM

Wilmington radio host Allan Loudell will move to the AM news station WDEL on Monday after 18 years at rival WILM. Today is Loudell's last day as host of WILM's morning news show. Loudell will host two weekday programs for WDEL, which is owned by Delmarva Broadcasting.

And here's the text of the news release from WDEL:

WDEL’S LOCAL LINEUP GETS STRONGER WITH LOUDELL

DELMARVA BROADCASTING COMPANY, PARENT COMPANY OF 1150 AM WDEL IN WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, IS EXCITED AND PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE ADDITION OF DISTINGUISHED LOCAL BROADCASTER ALLAN LOUDELL TO ITS MARKET LEADING TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS.

LOUDELL IS A 17 YEAR VETERAN OF THE DELAWARE RADIO MARKET, SERVING THE ENTIRE TIME AS PROGRAM MANAGER OF WILMINGTON STATION WILM. HE IS KNOWN AS A KNOWLEDGEABLE NEWS ANCHOR WITH AN EXTENSIVE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF PERSONAL NEWSMAKER CONTACTS.

“ALLAN IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO OUR FAMILY OF TALENTED, AWARD- WINNING PROFESSIONALS”, REMARKED DELMARVA BROADCASTING PRESIDENT PETE BOOKER. BOOKER NOTED THAT LOUDELL “ENHANCES A LINEUP OF LOCAL PERSONALITIES THAT IS ALREADY UNMATCHED.” THAT LINEUP INCLUDES WDEL HOST AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR RICK JENSEN, WELL KNOWN COLUMNIST AND TALK HOST AL MASCITTI, AND SPORTS DIRECTOR “BIG” DON VOLTZ.

LOUDELL WILL HOST “AT LEAST TWO LONG FORM PROGRAMS” EACH WEEKDAY, ACCORDING TO BOOKER. HE WILL PROVIDE REGULAR COMMENTARY, ON-THE-SCENE BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE, AND WILL BE VERY INVOLVED WITH PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAMMING AND THE COMPANY’S INTERNET PRODUCTS.

This could be interesting

As the news release indicates, WDEL already has a full schedule and a roster of local hosts. When exactly is Loudell going to do "two long-form programs each weekday." Unless "long-form" is not a three hour talk show (like Mascitti and Jensen already do) but a three to five minute commentary or feature (like Jensen does and Rush used to do on the station).

Clear Channel (like Delmarva Broadcasting and many other group owners) requires employees to sign non-compete agreements. Wonder if Clear Channel's lawyers will have something to say about this? This is not like Preston and Steve (no format change is involved).

What is most unusual, talent raids usually involve taking a strong competitor to a weaker competitor. Why should a stronger competitor hire from a weaker competitor? Especially, in this case, why hire talent whose appeal (based on past Arbitron data) skews to the "pre-death" demo?

This arrangment may be an "odd couple" pairing. Before Jack/Ben made "we play what we want" fashionable, Loudell's format was "I do what I want." Now, he's working for someone else, someone with firm ideas on how things should be done. Stay tuned.

Re: This could be interesting

Just some educated guesses in an attempt to answer your questions:

> When exactly is Loudell going to do "two long-form programs each weekday?"
I'm guessing the two talk shows will be shortened by an hour -- putting Loudell in AM drive from 9 to 10 and back again from 12 to 1 in his old WILM timeslot.

I'm guessing Alan either 1) probably was not required to sign one, since he was in management or 2) never got around to it or 3) CC never got around to getting any of the people to sign 'em.

Alan beat DEL in morning drive more often than not over the years.

> This arrangment may be an "odd couple" pairing.
His natural brains and talent, combined with the discipline of real radio could actually be a good mix.

Re: This could be interesting

It must have been frustrating for Allan to play the corporate middle-management game after years of having the run of the toy store. My guess is that he just decided he needed a fresh start. Allan may be a maverick, but he is a seasoned broadcaster with large-market chops. I think he'll do just fine at Delmarva.

Re: This could be interesting

It's going to be interesting to see how all this plays out. A year ago, WILM had more news/interviews and less satellite talk where as WDEL had less news/interviews and more satellite talk. Now it's all reversed. WDEL has almost all local talk, other than the three hours of Hannity from 3pm to 6. Of course with Allan moving to WDEL, who knows, maybe he'll do a 3pm-6pm news/interview/talk show and replace Hannity giving WDEL all local talk during day. Say, from 3-4 local talk with Allan (who does a great job as a talk show host), 4-6 an afternoon news/interview update program WDEL style except with Allan doing his interviews, etc, with Chris Carl still doing the 6-7pm newscast. Or another scenario maybe Hannity only from 3pm to 4, then from 4-7pm the news/interviews which would bring them to Len Holmquest at 7pm.

It will be interesting to see how the 12+ numbers react to all these major changes in Wilmington radio between WDEL and WILM.

Re: This could be interesting

As a WDEL fan, I have always been surprised at the number of radio listeners who really liked Loudell. A group of business owners I get with (a couple of dozen) each week, all in their late 40's and early 50's, are daily WILM listeners, who don't like Rush. They really like Loudell (these are non-radio geeks who, as I stated, own successful businesses)and will probably follow him to 1150AM. A funny aside, I had to tell all of them, native Delawareans all, what frequency WDEL was on!

The move makes a lot of sense. CC took Rush from WDEL so WDEL takes Loudell from WILM. Of course, I remember a few years ago when WDEL stole a woman named Bradley from WILM. She had done a good job there, but totally flopped on 1150. You never know...

Re: This could be interesting

That would be Carlotta Bradley, who I believe now is a radio correspondent for AP.

(What ever happened to the guy who replaced Carlotta Bradley at WILM? He was pretty good. Handsome, too...) :p
