LOVE 89 BLOWS UP

I hear that 89.1 FM and 88.3 FM are being sold. New programmers will air syndicated feeds such as K-LOVE. Local air staff is being fired. Is WRJZ affected as part of the sellout?

Where did you hear the info? The FM's 89.1 and 88.3 are the non-comm's of the bunch while the AM's 620 and 760 are licensed as commercial. The FM's are owned through Foothills Broadcasting and the AM's are owned through Tennessee Media Associates, aka Tom Moffit Jr. Which are all one in the same.

I don't listen to their FMs, but I'll occasionally flip to WRJZ, and used to flip to 760 for Laura Ingrahm before that new WNOX stole the show and put it on late nights during my TV time. bottom line, it's sad to lose any local presence

I'm sure EMF will file a waiver with the FCC saying they can't afford to maintain local studios due to the cost like they did in Morristown.

May EMF lose their garbage translators and low power stations. May the FCC's wrath come down on them when the public file and EAS violations get uncovered. They are a scourge on radio. And the other translator pirates. Note to EMF, get thee in Knoxville a studio location, CAP compliant EAS, and a up to date public file.

With this development, WIJV 92.7 can get Love 89.1 listeners by making some audio quality improvements and good audio processing. They are a almost decent station when they do stay on the air.

K-Love and Air 1 do have great music and great on-air staff, but sad we're losing local talent. They will be missed!

As for Victory 92.7/107.3, they need to 1) turn the stereo pilot back on, 2) crank up their output volume, 3) stop airing commercials for questionable businesses, 4) ditch Rick & Bubba! ::)

Still, WIJV is barely a local station. The music is on satellite from Salem (same as 93.7/94.1 The Fish in Nashville) as are the DJ's. And really, with 92.7's signal being so poor, they can't really be classified as a Knoxville station.

K-Love and Air 1 will still dominate the CCM market here in Knoxville.

Last I checked EMF is not violating any FCC laws ... They have EAS on all their full power stations and with the MSW's their Public Files are maintained at the Rocklin HQ of EMF.

I think in CCM music in East Tennessee, WLLJ-FM J 103 will be the dominant station. They have the signal and live and local programming and heavy influence in the industry. I like K-Love programming even if automated. The only beef I have with EMF is their flouting the translator laws. I would love to see them just get them licensed as LP stations instead. Satellite Fed Translators are not Legit. Translators are required to be fed by an in-market station.

This is better than what is happening with WNAZ in Nashville, which has been sold to Bott. At least the format will still be CCM and actually may be better, although I do hate to see the job losses. Bott is one of the best in the Christian talk format, but they do nothing with music of any type.

Satellite translators ARE legal on non-commercial FM frequencies. Also, K-LOVE's translators in West TN that are on commercial frequencies rebroadcast the full power stations from either Dyersburg or Memphis.

Some people think that EMF is the "Evil Empire" of CCM radio, but there are a lot of places that wouldn't have CCM radio if not for them. They came into West TN when no locally owned Christian station outside of Memphis had the backbone to do anything with CCM. Also, if Love 89 was struggling I'd rather see it sold to EMF than to some other group that would do little or nothing with CCM, or even worse, possibly to some anti-CCM group.

anotherguy, I couldn't agree more. If it can't be done locally, then I'm ecstatic that EMF came in to preserve CCM music in East Tennessee. It could have gone talk, BBN, southern gospel, Bott, etc.

I've traveled to many cities (some large, some not) that didn't have local CCM. I've read over and over where EMF didn't "ramrod" their way in and take over, but instead came to rescue a local station that couldn't keep the transmitters on the air. Also, as they've done in West Tennessee, they've added CCM to many cities that would otherwise not have it at all (Raleigh/Durham, Indianapolis, Myrtle Beach, Little Rock, Lexington, London/Corbin KY, Huntington/Charleston WV, etc.).

If locals can't (or won't) do it, then we should applaud the EMF's and Way FM's that come in a keep them on the air!

I'd agree with your comments on WAY-FM as well. They put translators in Dyersburg and Union City at before K-LOVE came in, but they were never able to go any further. In the last few years they've sold the UC translator after Air 1 came in, and the Dyersburg translator is off now. Air 1 is now in Hayti, MO, and it reaches into Dyersburg, so I can't help but wonder if it will be up for sale as well.

WAY-FM's focus has changed to going into larger cities, and they are selling off the translators in smaller towns like UC and Dyersburg. I'll miss getting to hear them, but at least Air 1 is taking their place.

So did the changes hapen today as scheduled?

All indications from good bye posts on the Love 89 Facebook pages indicates that the switch happened as planned... Love89's webstream is now slient so I can't tell from a far what is actually airing but someone did post on their facebook page "I am hearing Air1 now and it's not the same"

Yes, they switched over on 1/1/11 as planned. WDLF 88.3 is K-Love and WYLV 89.1 is Air 1.
