Looks like the rumors were true about jettisoning Love 94 in Miami. Went to the website and a new logo with the slogan "Move To The Music" appears. I was listening for a little holiday SJ and they're gone. What does this mean for Billy Raven with respect to his Smooth Jazz Network slot? I assume he was doing it from Love 94 and sending his tracks to the Network? Or was he at the Network sending his show to Love 94?
 
Another BA programmed station bites the dust. It's really sad that the format is dying off. I was over at the Miami board, trying to defend the format as a whole. There are some really good artist out there and there's a loyal fan base, but that's slowly drying up because of the content that is being presented out there now. It drives me nuts when these idiots (radio corp heads) try to call Fergie and Mariah Carey "smooth jazz". It's like they are watering down the brand name. They need to get on the Internet and check out stations like "The .wav", smoothjazz.com, sky.fm or wnjl.com to see some decent quality smooth jazz music.
 
This was a bit of a surprise since they were on the Network and CC owns the Network. Cutting your own subsidiary? Before they went all Christmas they were down to about 1 SJ track an hour. Lots of old Motown, Babyface (written, produced or sung by), Collins and Dion and Barry White. So it's a loss in name only
 
Yes, CC did make a mistake blowing up the jazz station. CC filled a gaping format hole with Rhythmic AC which was perfectly fine since Miami is a city big on dance music. I love the new station, but CC should have flipped Big 105.9 for Rhythmic AC. Love 94 had better ratings than Big had. What a shame.
 
Love 94 and the 93.9 frequency in Miami had a history of being innovative that's lost now. Before playing Smooth Jazz the station was very successful as a Mellow Rock station playing a kind of Soft AOR. Kenny Loggins, Melissa Manchester, Billy Joel, the album tracks the other stations never played.

Prior to being known as Love 94 it was WBUS which started out as a "Business News" station but then came "The Magic Bus" a Progressive Rock station and later they played Jazz while still WBUS "The Music Bus".

In those days 93.9 was the little guy, with a small signal on Miami Beach, the big signal came later.

In classic Clear Channel style they messed it up, then blew it up. I doubt the new format will last anywhere close to the 18 years the station enjoyed success as "South Florida's Smooth Jazz Station".
 
Always tuned into Love 94 on my various trips to Ft. Lauderdale. It WAS a great station. Sorry to hear that it has gone the way of so many other former Smooth Jazz terrestrial radio outlets this year.

There is some great new instrumental music being made out there by new and up-and-coming artists, and some by guys who have been around but would have never been heard on BA, like Jim Adkins. It is just going to take more effort to dig it up, but it's there. From talking to Pete Gitlin, it seems the genre is seeing a sort of rebirth in Europe. And as long as these artists continue to avoid covering tunes and stay creative, there is hope -- at least for outlets not under corporate influence or control.

I will be in Ocean City, MD, this weekend for the first time since WQJZ flipped from Jones to BA. Odds are I'll be looking for a classic rock station :mad:.

I just returned from Green Bay, WI for only the 2nd time since WAUN-FM flipped from Jones to BA. I tuned in only briefly last week while there, only to hear that WAUN-FM hadn't completely abandoned Jones!! ;)

Like AC's "The.wav", WAUN-FM continues to use the Keith Riker station ID liners!! :D :D

Keith Riker lives on in the Green Bay WI market via WAUN-FM, and streaming around the world via the finest smooth jazz station on the planet, "The.wav" :) ;)

Just for the record, as if you were not already aware, I am a big fan of Jones, Keith, and AC's "The.wav"...pay no attention to those "cheesy" icons at the end of my sentence...they should have been :) :) :)"s!

Sorry for the hijack, guys.

@DD: No Riker on WQJZ, but plenty of Boyz 2 Men!! :D :'( Not sure whether to laugh or cry. I have so many fond memories of visiting my folks at the beach and concurrently enjoying Jones' programming. It's only fitting that they have moved back across the Chesapeake and I will be making far fewer trips to Ocean City in the future.

CC never learns from their mistakes. They are repeating the same mistakes that sunk Mega 103.5 . Very repetitive, limited variety, very closed minded to suggestions. A well programmed rhythmic AC should thrive here in Miami. There are no excuses on why it shoudn't work. Being that they play music from the 70's to today, there are lots of rhythmic songs that were huge during these four decades here in Miami that aren't getting played. The #1 reason why they failed the first time around with rhythmic AC was because of repetitiveness and playing the same burned out safe songs over and over. It will be the same reason why they will fail the second time around if they don't make changes, paving the way for WIOD-FM.
