Love is in the air!

Whenever I hear “What The World Needs Now Is Love” by Jackie DeShannon on SiriusXM, I find it hard to believe that the tune is almost 60 years old. It figures that would be a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song. Pure genius. Still timely and relevant especially today.

Anyway, I started thinking about all the songs about love. No other subject comes close. Christmas/holiday tunes are a part of many artists’ repertoire, but there’s also a lot of the same exact song but with a different spin.

Love songs, on the other hand, have covers but most songs are unique. Love songs also cross many different genres of music. Every decade has its share of love songs. You’d think “Love” would be a popular format on the radio, but it isn’t. You’d also think “Love” would be a more popular name brand, but it’s not.

I recall “Love 94” when I lived in the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area. But the playlist was more soft pop hits than anything else with some jazz titles in the mix. They had a popular Sunday morning jazz program. Sure, there were songs about love, but it was one of many song themes.

Similarly, soft rock formats, like Sirius XM’s “The Bridge” or “Yacht Rock Radio” didn’t have the staying power to last on terrestrial radio. And so, there’s literally tons of love songs that have sold well but listeners want other genres and subjects in their favorite radio station. Then again, there are rock formats that just offer rock and the folks are content with that.

Perhaps an anomaly but there’s a lot of fickleness when it comes to the public and their tastes. All one must do is look at songs over the years that were mediocre or dreadful but made it to #1 or songs that had all the qualities of being a hit but just never went anywhere. There’s personal tastes and preferences but like it or not, the masses rule.

With Valentines Day approaching, I also wonder how much special programming there will be dedicated to love songs. I don’t recall seeing things like that for a long time.

I don’t remember when this was but when Rob Sidney and Gary Williams were at the helm of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale’s AC’s WLYF and WFEZ, both stations did a Valentine’s Day/weekend music specialty featuring love songs.

What I found extremely interesting was there was very little overlap in the songs both stations chose to air. The songs that were featured on both stations solidified each respective brand IMO. This was not a rehash of songs usually played. There was obvious work and effort in all of this and something I applaud.

And so, for the approaching Valentine’s Day, I present to you an A-Z list of love songs. It’s not like anything I’ve ever done before. Virtually, every one of my “music specials” were done in a Classic Hits/Oldies format style. This time, it was Soft AC/AC. And much is like AC as it once existed. I also never featured songs from this century ever before either. It was time to break out of my comfort zone.

There are titles that are featured on other formats. This list of songs has a wide variance in origin date. Despite that, I concentrated on romantic ballads and soft pop music. Just because a song has “Love” in the title didn’t mean it had a place here.

So, I hope we can keep comments about why this song was featured and not that song to a minimum. There are over 800 songs that will be presented and so I tried to be as inclusive as possible. Not all songs or artists may conform to “The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits.” I’m sure there’s some typos. I’ve corrected what I found to be obvious mistakes. It’s also the nature of Excel to prefill in information. I tried to be careful but sometimes these things can fall through the cracks.

There’s a slight South Florida lean in the song selections. There are also a few dozen songs both WLYF and WFEZ played on their Valentine’s Day special. I have the habit of writing down titles when stations have features such as this one.

Because Radio Discussions has limits to the number of characters that can be posted, I will offer X number of songs each day until Valentine’s Day. I decided not to do a popularity ranking because it’s way too difficult to make that distinction with many of these very fine tunes. The other is the habitual complainers will find fault with how I ranked the songs or what was #1.

Our personal preferences are unique as we all are. And so, with the amount of work that was involved in putting this all together, I still find the 1970s to have been an incredible decade for love songs, especially the early part of that decade. Consider all those beautiful renditions especially by the soul groups of that time in the early 70s. Add Manilow, Streisand, The Carpenters, Bread, Chicago, Olivia Newton-John, Roberta Flack....can go on and on. Each decade has its share of great love songs. I shared my preference. You may agree or disagree and that's fine.

Enjoy…hopefully!

I will be doing my annual “Love Is In The Air” show on Monday on a local LPFM. Why not on the special day? Well, that gives procrastinators a two-day heads up, or they will end up getting that special something for that special someone from the all-night gas station (LOL)

I often get questions about how I put this kind of thing together. For starters, I did have a listing of songs in the love category but I did wind up discarding about half of them. They were not apart of what I wanted to do as they were more classic hits oriented and I want to move away from that direction.

I looked at Top 100 year end song lists to get some ideas. But it's YouTube that plays heavily into my deciding the songs I pick. That was especially true for the more current titles of which I wasn't too familiar or not familiar at all. YouTube also provides other songs in that particular style I'm hearing. It's a very slow and arduous process but I find it all escape, enjoyable, and not work at all.

Out of all the songs in the last set. Etta James' "At Last" is a classic if there ever was one. Such passion that song. Probably at or near #1 if I did a ranking. There are a number of Beatles tunes that will appear in this survey. But something I remember is when Miami Magic 102.7 (Classic Hits/Oldies) did their various countdowns, "And I Love Her" always scored high. It also fits in the overall sound I wanted here.

Patsy Cline's "Crazy" is just a great song. The "Closer I Get To You" by Roberta Flack is another good one. In fact, all her renditions were just fantastic. A good starter set. The Association's "Cherish" was a song that lasted a very long time on the radio. It was frequently in a lot of ranking music specials where it performed very well. The public may have their quirkiness about them but they get a lot of it right too. Honestly, I love most of the songs in that first segment.

Regarding how I put this list together, I neglected to mention that I also utilize "Last Song Played" features both in terrestrial radio and SiriusXM. It's more of a guide than anything else. I do take account the amount of spins. Some surprise me as I don't think the song deserves that. For example, Sirius features "Him" by Rupert Holmes in a number of their channels, including "Love." I didn't include it because I waffled on it. When I'm not sure, I go with my gut and don't include it.

There were a number of songs in the last set I could have included but didn't for all sorts of reasons. There was "Escape ( The Pina Colada Song)," "Fool if You Think It's Over" by Chris Rea and a "Dream Lover" by Bobby Darrin. My thinking was are they really true love songs or more pop oriented? Then again, I featured Looking Glasses "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl). Perhaps a little contradictory.

But that brings me to song selection in the real world. I have long found the music selection process fascinating. Perfect, it is not. Although I think the music testing of today is far more accurate for attracting target audiences than what existed, say back in the days of hit music on AM. There it was mostly based on sales both locally and what the various "trades" reported.

PDs of the past went with their gut in a lot of instances just like I'm doing here. It wasn't until recently that I began to question the entire music selection process of the past. Don't get me wrong, there were was a lot that proved to be correct decisions. But it was far from a perfect way to select songs.

Earlier, I talked a little about songs that reached #1 and sometimes you'd scratch your head and wonder how could that be. Well, it was the kids and teens who bought those "45's" because they were cheap. Adults could afford to buy LPs. If you ever read accounts of the big-named PDs of AM Radio's glorious past, they would mention that for a song to be included in the playlist, it would have to appeal to multiple demographics. How did they know that? As far as I could tell, they made assumptions.

It was a mass-appeal philosophy for the AM hit music radio stations of the day. A lot of it did work. But they were human just like everyone else so they didn't always get it right. Many hit music radio stations during that time would print playlists for the week and they could be found at various record stores. Many also included new songs they identified as "Pick Hits" or "Hot Prospects" etc. Let's just say, when I looked through many years of playlists for a WABC, the batting average for identifying what would become a big hit was pretty dismal.

Anyway, I digress a bit but music selection continues to fascinate.

There were a lot of great songs in the last set. A standout one is Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I saw Your Face." In case you didn't know, this was not an original song but it was a huge hit. She won Grammy Awards two years in a row for the aforementioned song and then "Killing Me Softly."

Lionel Ritchie & Diana Ross' duet "Endless Love" was not only a huge hit but it was a favorite wedding song for many years, especially through the 80s.

I had some issues with "cut and paste" in the previous posting. Some of it was done piecemeal. As a result, "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" by Mark Chessnutt was left out.

But this also provides an opportunity. Obviously, the one by Aerosmith wasn't included by me by design because I didn't think it positioned well the overall sound. It's been quite a while now but formats that bill themselves as "Lite" and "Easy"play the Aerosmith song and more such as Bon Jovi and Whitesnake etc. It's not exactly light and easy in my book but to the desired demos - it is.

I've told this story multiple times before but it applies here. When I lived in Jacksonville and was in a doctor's waiting room, AC WEJZ was playing in the background. It was also quite loud. One of those aforementioned artists popped up and the older folks waiting weren't too happy about that. They demanded the volume be lowered which did happen. In subsequent visits, you could hardly hear the station. I'm sure the complaints kept coming from some of the patients.

I spoke to the doctor about that in casual conversation. He laughed, especially when I used the term "hard rock." He was in mid 40s at the time and his definition of hard rock was way different. He mentioned a lot of heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath. Now that kind of music was not "waiting room" material but to him there was nothing wrong with Bon Jovi and many 80s hair bands that had Top 40 hits.

What my doctor said was reinforced in my own research. I worked marketing projects at the time and we researched all kinds of things about consumer preferences, including music. I'll never forget that some of the ladies talked about being in love with Shaun Cassidy as teens. As they grew older, Shaun's pin-up poster was replaced with Jon Bon Jovi. And so it goes, folks.

The song list will resume tomorrow...hopefully with no issues!

Okay. I identified the problem. My mouse needed a battery and that's why I had trouble tracing large amount of data to copy. There was also an issue with auto save. So, I copied in bits and pieces and sometimes leaving behind songs as my mouse had a mind of its own. In matching my list to what posted, I've identified the following songs that were left behind:

Air That I Breathe The Hollies 1974
Believe Elton John 1995
Hold On To The Nights Richard Marx 1988
I Think It's Love Jermaine Jackson 1986
I'll Never Find Another You The Seekers 1968
I'll Never Fall In Love Again Dionne Warwick 1970

Noteworthy songs in the last set, again many to choose from. "I Say a Little Prayer" is another Burt Bacharach/Hal David masterpiece. Aretha Franklin covered the Dionne Warwick original. She did such a fantastic rendition with the song and that's why she gets the mention. Also, Dionne Warwick has more than adequate representation on this survey song list.

"I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos is an oldie but still a goodie. SiriusXM has two dedicated Love formats. One is web-based only - Sirius XM Love The 70s and there Art Garfunkel's cover is played to death on a number of their channels. The original is still by far the best and still sounds good when one thinks of romantic songs.

Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light" is one of those songs that's been in the lost category for quite some time. It's one of those songs that you have to listen to carefully to truly appreciate the brilliant lyrics and the story told.

While Foreigner is regarded as a rock band overall, their rendition of "I Want To Know What Love Is" is packed with emotion and lyrics that tell the story very well. It's a well-done song.

Likewise, Steve Perry's "Foolish Heart" shows the versatility of the artist. He pulls that song off very well. In my travels, I would have liked to have heard that song more on the radio.

In my attempt to be as accurate as possible, the song "One Hundred Ways" is a collaboration between Quincy Jones and James Ingram. To this day, it's one of my favorite songs of all times. Despite reaching #14 nationally, that song really got a lot of airplay back in 1982 in South Florida. (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale radio market). As I recall, BOTH WLYF and WFEZ featured the song in their Valentines music specialty.

One of so many songs that proved to be a big hit in Miami and not so much elsewhere. We've already seen "All This Love" by Debarge, a song that got a lot of airplay in Miami. Nationally it charted #17 in '83. Kenny Loggins' "Heart To Heart" is my favorite song from him and one that wasn't heard much anywhere over time. I don't recall the old Classic Hits Magic 102.7 ever playing it. It got to #15 nationally.

There's a number of songs throughout the list that I included here from my recollections of South Florida, especially in the 80s. But, not all are there because I felt some have really become obscure. Billy Stewart's "I Do Love You," a mid 1960s song was played occasionally for decades there. The song charted #26 back in 1965. You may know the GQ version.

A huge South Florida hit back in 1982 was Shalamar's "A Night To Remember." In fact, that song was so popular, it was the #1 song on Y-100's Top 100 year-end survey. BTW, that song never even cracked Billboard's Top 40 charts. To this day, it's one of my all time favorites from the entire 80s decade. I didn't think it would work on this survey. New Order's "A Bizzare Love Triangle" is another great song that got a lot of Miami airplay even up to the not too distant past when the old Coast (WFLC) did their 80s themed weekends.

"Goodnight My Love" by Gloria Estefan was listed. I'm quite convinced that she covered this song after hearing Rick Shaw of the old WQAM-AM play it as his closing song for years. That was during the AM hit Radio days of the 60s. BTW, Rick featured Ray Peterson's version of the song. As I recall, it was covered by a few folks....a great song too.

The song list will resume tomorrow and will conclude Wednesday, Valentines' Day!

To follow up on the previous post, I did research Gloria Estefan' s version of "Goodnight My Love" and yes she was influenced to cover the song in one of her CDs because of Rick Shaw. In Rick's last show before retirement on WMXJ (former Magic 102.7) this was discussed. I also saw mentions of that in various blogs. While I thought there were a handful of covers for that song, there were literally dozens. The song was covered from the 50s through this century.

The L-O segment of songs have so many personal favorites that just about all of them warrant discussion. But, we'll limit it to a few.

"Love is Blue" by Paul Mauriat is an instrumental. And yes, instrumentals were played on the radio at one time and there were good numbers of them that were monster hits. This song was from 1968. I'm old enough to not only remember the tune but I bought the record almost immediately after hearing it for the time. Why that was, it's hard to explain. But sometimes it's haunting kind of melodies that are just as effective as the lyrics.

In researching that song, it was #1 nationally for 5 weeks. On WABC-AM, the station I would have heard that song, it first appeared on the playlist on January 30, 1968 in the #20 position. On February 5, it leaped to #2. And then it enjoyed an impressive #1 position for 7 weeks. In the stations' Top 100 for 1968, it was in fifth place overall. The Beatles' "Hey Jude" had one more additional week at #1 on WABC.

The beauty of not being familiar with songs is you can easily hear them online. When I hear that tune still, it's almost as if you can hear a love conflict being told without words. That was the amazing thing about instrumentals. There's a few of them scattered through this survey. If you are so inclined, listen to them and others you don't know and form your own opinions.

Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis" from 1974 tells a unique kind of love story with a desert setting. It's that sultry voice of hers that makes it a classic and an underrated one I might add. She had one other Top 40 hit no one really knows but you'd think she would have had some staying power. Then again disco came along soon after and her style came and went real fast.

Johnny Mathis' "Misty" is a song from 1959 and only reached #12 nationally. You'd think it would have done better but as is often the case, higher ranking competing songs don't all last the test of time.

While there were some obvious songs that I didn't include because of length concerns, I was generous when it came to songs that began with the word "Love" and there's a lot of good ones there.

The Stylistics are featured a number of times. The soul sounds of the early 70s were just incredible. Bloodstone's "Natural High" is another example. A great tune no matter how you slice it.

I didn't include Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park" from that same phenomanal music year of 1968. In addition to instrumentals, the general public for quite some time now has given thumbs down for songs like this. Donna Summer's version has survived better. While I thought the lyrics conveyed incredible poetic imagery, there's also music history sites that pan the song as having the worst lyrics ever. Over the years, posters on this discussion site has said the same. So, it goes to show our favorite songs are truly personal but the masses rule, like it or not.

More songs on the way! P-S

Regarding the songs that didn't transfer correctly here, I found another one. So, apologies. I didn't highlight it in yellow as I did the others so I will give it special recognition here. Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" had all the elements of not only a fantastic song about love but the stuff of what makes a song a big hit. And that it was - #1 for 6 weeks nationally in late 1960.

You may recall the expression "Elvis has left the building" to signify that a radio station would no longer feature any of his songs with the exception of perhaps a "Blue Christmas" during holiday season programming. What we can't deny is Elvis' contributions to music but also to music radio of the early days. People listened because they loved what he delivered. If you have Joel Whitburn's "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits," you'll see just how many great hits he had.

It brings me to passion and versatility. Take a band like Chicago. In the early 70s they could go from a "25 or 6 to 4" to a "Colour My World" seemingly effortlessly. Obviously, Peter Cetera of the band certainly rebranded himself and wound up as an AC staple for many years.

I'd also like to acknowledge Stevie Wonder. He's well represented on this list but only about songs of love. He was much more and he could get serious too. "Living for the City" is one such example. He was also a gifted writer. He's one of the writers of Aretha Franklin big 1974 hit "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Going To Do) That song you will eventually see on this list. It's one of so many that never got the kind of recognition deserved. Too late now. But think about how many classic hits stations featured that song. It wasn't many. The reply is almost always about music testing and so that shuts further discussion down.

There were exceptions. In my humble estimation, Philadelphia's WOGL was just about the best classic hits station in the nation. There was a time they did do love song specularity countdown programming for Valentine's Day. And they did a good job with it too. I recall discussions on this radio board about the fact that they didn't play "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone. That song has pretty much met the same fate as "MacArthur Park" I discussed earlier. You'll have to wait and see if that song will be included here. Think overall sound of the songs featured and you'll get your answer.

Jose Feliciano's cover of "Light My Fire" was brilliant in my view. Here's a rock song that was completely transformed. Yes, the song was loaded with passion but outside of the lyrics, it really is an entirely different song. In the past, I did hear that tune occasionally on some Classic Hits stations, especially Miami's WMXJ.

Taylor Dayne's "Love Will Lead You Back" has passion written all over it. She did a tremendous job bringing those lyrics to life. Here's another artist who didn't quite get the kind of recognition deserved. Madonna you might say took all the oxygen out of the room.

There may have been some surprise seeing "Come Fly With Me" by Sinatra on this list. I'll let you in on a little secret. It was many years ago, I had the opportunity of speaking with Sue O'Neill who was once a weekend host on WCBS-FM. It was also during that time I had done another one of my music specials on this board. Her advice to me was to inject surprise into the list. This was the approach PD Brian Thomas used when he was at the helm. In keeping with that I toyed with including Sailcat's "Motorcycle Mama" on the list. While it's not considered a love song per se, it's about finding freedom. Often, we do see that when love has turned sour. I do remember that song was played during Cousin Brucie's tribute to love segment he would do in the last half hour of his Saturday night show. Anyway, there's much that can be done to keep music presentations interesting.

Now that's it's Valentines' Day, we'll "hear" the final songs as we wind down the alphabet.

There's 84 songs in the T, U, and V set and I wound up listening to all of them back-to-back. Amazingly, it all sounded pretty good given the many decades represented. I didn't pay much attention to dates for this special dedicated to love but it's possible 7 decades of music was represented. More likely it's 6 but still it was to show just how popular the subject of love is in music. And love songs go way beyond this soft pop, sometimes Standards approach.

For those who love oldies, that set of songs also had a very good representation. It's just the nature of the alphabet. The Classics IV had 2 songs in this list and they could have easily had 4 with songs like "Spooky" and "Everyday With You Girl," a song you may not be familiar. They originated from Jacksonville, Fl and are credited with originating a soft southern rock style. There were efforts over the years to get that group into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but I don't believe that ever happened. Speaking of Jacksonville, it was home to quite a lot of musical artists.

That segment had so many great songs in it that 90% would warrant comment but that would get tedious to the masses who obviously aren't too interested in this subject as it is and they certainly don't like to read long posts. So, I'll keep most of it to myself.

"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" by the Casinos is a song that sounds older than it is. When the old Magic 102.7 in Miami did their various music specials, they would sometimes print the songs in a kind of pamphlet. I used to get my own copy at the old Peaches Records & Tapes store on Sunrise Blvd in Ft. Lauderdale. I bought zillions of records there too. The song was listed as 1967 and I remember changing it to 1957. Eventually, I came to realize it wasn't a typo.

Then again, there are some artists like Michael Buble who have made a career out of sounding like singers like Sinatra but as they say the original is still the best.

The song "Time" by The Alan Parsons Project may have raised a few eyebrows but it's haunting lyrics and execution remain timeless in my view. It's a song about the ravages of time and life. We move or we lose contact with those we may have had a deep affection or even love. "Who knows when we shall meet again, if ever. But time keeps flowing like a river to the sea."

Dean Martin's "That's Amore" enjoyed a resurgence in recognition and popularity with the movie "Moonstruck," one of my personal movie favorites of all time. Because of my Italian heritage, I saw so much reality of my own family and their emotions. Anyway, Dean Martin deserved a place here. That guy could sing about a dish rag and make it sound sexy.

If this were a countdown, The Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" would certainly be in the Top 3 most favorite songs. You may recall, that song was usually #1 in various oldies countdowns. Again, a move - Ghost - acquainted the younger generation with the song.

Barry Manilow has some good representation on this list. I could have added more. While it's hard to say what song of his would be a favorite, that segment had two really outstanding songs in "This One's For You," and "Tryin' To Get The Feeling." SiriusXM has those two songs on a power rotation from what I can tell.

"This Guy's In Love With You" by Herb Albert was another song from 1968, similar to Richard Harris, in that it wasn't sung by a singer. It was a monster hit coming in at #7 in Billboard's Top 100 for that year. Yes, I had that record in my collection. I think the appeal of that song was Herb Albert just looked like a regular guy who sings like most of us so it was relatable. A great song and no wonder, it was another Burt Bacharach and Hal David collaboration.

A final note for that segment. Lulu's "To Sir With Love" was another monster hit in the midst of the "British Invasion." It was the #1 song of the year in 1967. It was many years later that I heard an interview with WABC legendary jock, Dan Ingram. He admitted to absolutely hating that song. But for all those very many weeks it was #1 and it played every single hour 24/7, you can just imagine what that was like if you didn't care for a song.

I loved the song and still do. But it proves that each of us have unique tastes. But back then, it was all about how the song sold so if the masses loved it and it fit into the format, it was played. To this day, I often wonder the torture the jocks must have felt if they didn't like a song but heard it over and over again long before voicetracking came alone.

More final thoughts to come.

We conclude with song commentary and I'd like to revisit a couple tunes in the "S" portion of the survey.

I would be negligent if I didn't discuss "Spanish Harlem" by Ben E. King." At first blush, you may have been surprised with that song's inclusion but it truly is a love song. And love has many different aspects to it. Whether you interpret the song as one who loves the beauty of a flower and nature or the rose likely being a metaphor for a girl who is "soft and sweet and dreaming," it's a classic all the way through.

This song was written by the legendary Phil Spector. Need we say more? And as jocks would remind us for a long time, Ben E. King recorded that song along with "Stand By Me" on the same day. It was a very good day for him, the music world, the public, and radio.

Thirty Eight Special is probably best known for their rock-oriented hits. Here's another band that originated in Jacksonville, Fl. "Second Chance" simply fits into the overall sound and theme of love songs. There were plenty of other rock-oriented artists who had a softer, love type song. Perhaps that's something to explore the next time around.

In the last music segment, I included both versions of "You Send Me" by design. There's Sam Cooke and a cover by Michael Bolton. Clearly the original is the better song, at least in my view. As I listened to a lot of this list, I couldn't help but think that an emotional attachment is needed to truly make a song your favorite.

For the more contemporary selections with artists like Adelle, Celine Dion, Toni Braxton and others even in the pop arena such as The Backstreet Boys, there were solid performances and a lot of good singers. But when I think of the incredible voice of Barbra Streisand, none of the others can be thought of as better. Again, that's just my view. I had toyed with included "Memory" for this selection. Perhaps I should have. But when you listen to that song, you just can't help getting pulled in to the whole story.

After listening to a lot of this music over the past couple months, I still regard the 1970s as being a really good decade for love songs. The early 70s was especially good given all those soulful and mellow tunes from artists like The Stylistics. Al Greene is worthy of a mention too. He had a lot more hits than just "Let's Stay Together." The 60s would be a close second. The 50s had it's share of really good love songs too. Whitney Houston graced the 80s with a lot of fantastic songs. There were others. But I suspect if you ask the average person to describe music of the 80s, I doubt they would think of it as a decade loaded with love songs.

As I mentioned at the start of all this, there are some subtle leans of songs that were quite popular in South Florida. There's Al Jarreau. To this day, whenever I hear his music I can't help but think of the old "Love 94." They played a lot of his music and so did all the CHR stations in the early 80s. His music complements South Florida.

There was an Expose selection, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Stevie B and quite a good number of artists who had national hits but did especially well in South Florida. "Through The Fire" by Chaka Khan was not a Top 40 hit but it received significant airplay in South Florida. It's a really good song. Listen to it if you are not familiar with it. I also recall both WLYF and WFEZ featured this song in their Valentine's Day music special from the years past.

Finally a song in that segment that deserves special recognition is Dinah Washington's "What a Difference A Day Makes." This is a 1959 tune that reached #8 nationally. It had all the makings of being an even bigger hit but it was rock 'n roll that dominated the charts in the late 50s. A new kind of music and sound had taken over from what the first half of the 50s sounded like. Eventually there would be The British Invasion, disco, and everything else in between over time.

Musical preferences change over time. But what remains constant is people will gravitate to those songs and artists they enjoy. To get to that place, talent must be exceptional and there must be extraordinary efforts to get that song in front of the public. Radio tests what listeners want to hear. It's all a never ending cycle.

On the subject of love songs, we've only scratched the surface even with over 860 songs presented here. Many I consider classics. It's a popular theme of singers and lyricists alike. And we'll hear a lot more.
