Love It

JoJo Kincaid's real first name is Joe. He's gone by JoJo Kincaid since 1970 on the air (with the exception of when he was at WSGN/Birmingham, where he was Amaysa KinCaid), including in 1975 which was when I worked with him, about a year after I first met him. JoJo had worked several stations in Boston, Detroit, L.A., San Fran (two stations), Miami, San Diego, Denver, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Philly, Dallas, Charlotte...

He worked twice in his hometown of Gainesville, also in Daytona and Ocala. He's no interloper; this is a Florida guy come home.

We're not talking about a guy that's got a lightweight track record. He's worked for a lot of heavy hitters in his career. And believe it or not, he's one of the most REAL people on the air- he's got that energy in person as well.

I feel for the Q105 people who were released, because I've been there before; heck, I'm there NOW. And I've been on the other side- in 1974 when the staff at WJDX/Jackson walked out or was fired, I was one hired to replace one of those people. And if it hadn't been me, it would have been someone else. Whatever I chose had nothing to do with what happened to those before. When they're fired, they're gone.

If you wish to be angry, be so. But place your anger in the right place.

By the way, the silly all-caps thing with JoJo Kincaid is kind of childish...

Don't know how the caps thing started unless a tribute page did that and i copied it. I also thought he spelled his last name with an "e" at the end. I know what you are saying, it's just that Q was the last fully local station of it's kind here. All the others have been or are also being dismantled. Q hired people who were dropped by other stations and found a place for them. I think Nikki Cruz was cut loose from CC for one. Now there is seemingly nobody in the market who might be picking up the old staff for anything because all the other stations are COX and CC.

I know it is AM but hopefully with 1470 now doing Oldies, they might pick up some of the old staff. The PR alone would help direct the listeners to the AM dial. Genesis Radio has been pretty aggresive lately with hiring Luis Albertini and and better sales staff. And yes, I know it is still AM but..... at least they seem to be growing rather than shrinking like the big 3, CC, Cox and CBS.

We all have "war stories" to share. The reality is that unkind cuts happen in every business, not only radio. Of course, radio people are high profile and we know when they get the "pink slip". Years ago, WFLA-FM dropped "beautiful music" for a slick country format. Changed the calls to WOJC and hired some pretty good people. The late Bill Campbell was one of those. Bill Garcia was PD and hired me to do mid day. About nine months into the format, management called a "mandatory" staff meeting. We all assembled in the conference room. The GM came in announced a format change and opened his jacket only to pull out a stack of envelopes. Those envelopes contained a final check and severance. Without that experience, and others, my 11 year GM gig at WLVU would have never happened. Have to agree with Ms Music. A high profile guy like Marvin would make sense for 106.3 or 1470 if the economics add up.

I wasn't offended, just didn't understand the all caps.

I can understand everything in this discussion except... being personal against someone, especially when that someone DOES have an excellent track record, and is a good guy to know.

What site were you referring to, Stringer?

Re: JoJo K all-caps thing ... it was in caps on the thumbnail of the link - sorry 'bout that! And I am very carefully not to personally attack Mr. Kincaid because I do not know him personally. After learning that he came here to be with his ailing Mother (on another thread), I even wished him Mom well. I don't care for his radio style. It's one of those hyper, vintage things that should have stayed in the 70's-early 80's, in my opinion (along with timing his chatting over musical interludes down to the last, exact second).

He talks about Mason, but doesn't talk TO Mason, or any other Jock. Plus, it seems that the few, minor references he makes to something that Mason did, were probably spoon-fed to him by somebody who actually listened to Mason's show and said "here ... reference this ... it'll seem like you are actually interacting w/Mason." He also doesn't talk about local things, events, places, because he doesn't know them. We liked our local connection to our local jocks. We simply do not like (a) the direction the new and improved Q has taken; or (b) the steps the new leaders took to get there.

I honestly don't know what the station thinks it is going to accomplish. The new mix of music is good, but not great. I still believe that they could do a better job of choosing great songs that make us go "aha! Forgot about that one!" ... instead of saying "why that Hall & Oates song, or Gladys Night song ... and why not Naughty, Naughty, or Part-Time Lover, or Pink Cadillac. As for the new jocks - it is apparent by the postings on the blogs that won't die that many of us are not going to warm up to those guys - period.

I've been listening to Max 98.3 a lot lately. I do have "a-ha!" moments with a lot of their songs. So, I will patiently wait for them to hire all of the Q jocks, so I can recapture my local connection, with local jocks who will talk about local things, events and places (as well as to each other), and I will spend two hours per day driving and hanging out with my old friends, supporting the advertisers who are buying time on Max ... and we the listeners, along with air talent, will have another great, local station. And it'll be Good Night Gracie to the old Q.
