LOVEfm

Anyone know where Ric Lippincott is going? Feder only reported he's leaving...didn't say to where (if anywhere). Sorry he's going...he's a class act.

First the morning guy leaves. Then LOVE FM places an ad on their web site "looking for announcers". Now the PD is leaving? What's going on? Anybody know?

Maybe it could be the tweak to a true "Movin'" format that people have been speculating about? They are pretty much close to it now.

Re. RL ending up at 'LS. Anything's possible, but not sure why he would. The AM is well programmed and doing great. ZZN just hired a new PD. I'm sorta hoping he lands back in San Francisco or some other warmer climate. If he does, I'll be bugging him for work.

They're commited to the current format as according to Drew Horowitz.

Tommy Edwards is an amazing air talent and broadcaster who could do just about any job in radio. And he sounds virtually ageless on the air and like he still enjoys doing it.

Unfortunately, Larry doesn't. That doesn't take away from the great years of radio he did. But he's certainly not LOVEfm material. Robert Murphy would give them a spike for a while -- but not sure whether he would sustain it (he could if he wanted to).

Dunno. The A/C game is pretty tough to win these days, especially in major market/urban centers. WLTW in New York seems to do it -- they have a brilliant programmer and all resources on deck. I don't particularly envy anybody trying to program any variety of A/C in major markets today. Airing yesterday's jocks probably isn't the answer.

Tommy is good..even with the scripts he has to read.....They dont sound like scripts when he does 'em....Depending on who the "yesterday" Jock is-might not a bad thing...

My 2 cents on LOVE-fm:

Actually, I would like to see more of an urban based programming with mass appeal.... (not too much, though) at LOVE-fm with a touch of 1990s B96 sprinkled in...a good dance PD could pull this off.....scale back on the Motown and decent dose of 80s (R&B included) would do the trick......

More listener interaction...(or a decent show of a listener call in)

Contest that are not based on a "high school variety show" concept....maybe more on a young professional level.....(cash give-aways work)

Rally concert promoters so that they use your station for concert nights.....

Rally around the ethnic listeners - (African American & Hispanic) are more loyal listeners  so you can get higher TSL.....achieve the balance for ethinic appeal without sounding too bubble gum or cheesey to keep them listening....and yet keep it broad appeal for non ethnic listeners..... balance is everything....

Lippy is a bonehead and the brain trust over at Bonneville should have never hired a guy like Rick to program that station. He was and is a has been. The reason they continue to fail is becasue they call the station LOVE FM and play KC and the Sunshine Band. Had they been "Movin" from the start, they would have probably succeded.

They are owned by a bunch of freakin mormons

They cannot even have beer commercials

Funny...it wasn't until I read your post for about the fourth time that I realized you wrote "mormons" and not "morons." It's a weird paradox -- seeing entrepreneurs who are apparently principled (even if it isn't 'our' principles) isn't so bad. Other side of it is that's it's damned hard enough to win the ratings and revenue game without idiosyncratic restrictions on what you can and can't do. Of course, TMX does well enough in that environment. Seems like they should do even better with such a strong morning show and pretty good on-air talent across the board.

I wonder what people think it would take to enter this market and take a real, concerted shot at the leaders. The last really successful incursion I can remember was when Buddy Scott came blasting into the market with the original B-96. It was straight ahead top-forty. With the exception of Biondi (which was as much a stunt as anything), he deliberately went out of market for his air talent. He put on a great product out of the box.

What would you do 25 years later? Go head to head in a format? Go after US-99? GCI? WGN? WOJO? What could ZZN do if it was actually a really well-produced, great-talent? Are the days of head-to-head all out format battles with the goal to be the overall ratings winner over? Will it be own-a-cluster-and-use-it-to-lock-up-a-demo for the rest of time?

Lots of programming consultants out there claiming that the last distinguishing mark of over-the-air music radio is what happens between the songs. Are they just justifying their existence or will there be a new day for great radio?

Excellent post! If I had two stations, I'd attack V103 and Lite. They're both the weakest they've been in years. Lite would be attacked with a "Lighter than Lite" position, where the music was the star and personalities secondary.

For my V-attacker, I'd go back to V103's roots with a wide variety of Today Hits & Dusties, sprinkled with Chicago steppers and House classics.

I've been listening some to WNEW-FM in NY lately -- their new "Fresh" format. It sure isn't my cup of tea, but it sounds right to me -- lighter than light. Even jockless for now, it's got a palpable "stationality."

It's interesting that CC's NY-version of Lite -- WLTW -- wins the market. They have an outstanding programmer at the helm and he seems pretty adept at living within the CC culture and at the same time using his considerable programming acumen to stand out and make occasional bold moves (like recently re-tooling their morning show). It's amazing what extra latitude and leeway winning will buy you.

To attack V103 I don't think you can flank 'em (i.e. the movin' format or rhythmic A/C). It's gotta be straight ahead adult urban. World class talent...community involved...super well produced...well-placed jumps out of the regular format (like a Sat. night dusties show). I'd do anything and everything I could with Op. Push and other community organizations. Come to think of it, I'd make a run at Jay Dixon (OM of WALR Atlanta) and let him do his urban oldies format here. I bet he'd win.

Agree with the V-attacker, but with a few tweaks......I would go back to WBMX. Why you might ask? Well for one all the 'BMX Club kids are grown now..(on average 30-49). I would regulate "steppin" to Sundays...besides steppin is what put V on the map...try something different.....

Take the "If it feels good" play it approach that 'BMX had....Cut back on the ballads to give more energy....As far as currents, Go along the vibe that Omarion - "Entourage" & Gnarles Barlkey - "Crazy" ..Go for a 3 to 1 ratio on currents to classics....

9am to 2pm give a decent energy ..where you wont fall asleep in your office, but make you hum and tap your foot to it...but not too much, after all listeners are at work....

2pm - 4:30 take it up a notch with the energy...

5pm hit em with a BMX classics mix to get 'em home....

6pm to 10pm hit em hard with classics & currents

11pm mellow it out a bit....

Weekend Show? Mixshow of course-Friday (classic BMX)
Mixshow -Saturday (new House/Underground)

Suggested jocks- Fiona Verde (middays)
Rick Party (evenings)
Let Doug Banks (afternoons)
Richard Steele(Overnights )
Devonte Stone (weekend days)

Not sure on mornings......

Outside of that, your idea is fine.......

Tommy Edwards is the only reason I listen to that crap on WILV

waking up to Tommy in the morning is almost like the good old says when he was playing music
