Lovin' Star 98.7

When Star 98.7 flipped a few weeks back I started listening in the office during midday. I have to say folks, I'm really liking the mix of music, the reduction in jock chatter, and the overall pace and feel. Granted, it's not the most imaginative playlist but I haven't gotten bored yet. And I am hearing bands and performers I wouldn't have heard before unless I surfed KROQ and other alternative stations. Anyone else have the same reaction? :)

Yeah I'm a fan of the changes too. It's nice to have some alternative on the air without all the hard stuff that KROQ plays. It would be nice if they played some songs every once in a while that wern't so super mainstream, but it is clear channel and KROQ itself is pretty mainstream I guess. I think it's kind of funny to hear them make fun of KROQ every once in a while.

Snore 98.7 yaawwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnn.

With some tweaking it could be interesting. Sorry guys, don't mean to be negative. Just my opinion.

Star is sounding much better but I think it's missing the personality it had with it's jocks. Let them open up a little more.

Most of these songs have already been burnt to a crisp by KROQ. Who are they targeting? A narrow group of guys who somehow didn't catch these songs on KROQ but have stumbled upon them on Star because their girlfriends/wives (who are now pissed) listed to the station, and haven't figured out how to switch the dial?

Putting up billboards touting Pearl Jam? Really? That's hot. In 1995.

I've noticed they've already tweaked the playlist since moving in this new direction.

It's now adult-leaning Alternative Rock as opposed to Modern AC. There are defintely a lot of common artists, but the station is now playing some stuff you would *never* hear on a Modern AC station.

The playlist definitely reminds me of Radio 104-5 in Philly.

I don't think they're done "morphing" Star yet. They're not going to do a full-fledged flip like KBIG, but the changes will be just as drastic once they're done.

I truly hope that you are correct. They are indeed better than they were. The mix is definately more rock leaning, but the the songs are one or two cuts deep and have all been well fried....decent songs, but tired. Let's hope they continue "morphing" into something very interesting.

I seriously doubt we'll see anything interesting.
But enough with the identity crisis. Are they "Star" or not? The billboards have replaced the "star" in the logo with a guitar. And the DJs and sweepers only mention "98.7." Yet the website, which is still mentioned on the air, remains "Star987.com" and there, the logo still includes a star.

Good call!

Looks like Mr. Martin has already made changes to the music. The progression toward more of an "Alternative" sound is continuing...

I imagine I'm EXACTLY in this station's target demo (male, too old for KROQ anymore, but was an avid listener) and my reaction is also a big yawn. Same ol' stuff.

They have a new, completely ridiculous billboard that says "This billboard was censored by corporate suits. But they can't touch the music."

How was it censored? What did it "say" before it had to be "changed?" LOL.

Maybe...."We play a lot of boring s**t?" Or....."We have no ideas for this frequency. WE'RE F***ED!"

Talk about irony. The station could not be more corporate. Is there anyone naiive or stupid enough to buy into this station as a rebellious "pirate radio" or something?

The target has always been expressed as 25-39 females. It is part of Clear's "wall of women." How are you in this target?

Given its harder sound, is Star still women 25-39? I'd think men of that age better remember Sublime, Pearl Jam, etc.

It's not hard enough.

Drop the stupid "soft rock" crap and add some Ozzy, Metallica, Seven Avengefold, Korn, etc etc etc, and then we'll have a good rock station.

Until then, it's my "only when KROQ is boring itself" station.

You may be right... with PPM coming, and given the near 25% greater radio usage by men in that measurement system, they may be realigning to be friendly to a male segment also.

The new Star is much more listenable, even though I don't identify with a lot of the music. too old?. If there was a music station that talked to much,it was the old Star. More music Yeah! :)

Well, the whole "rebellious" ad campaign screams male, doesn't it?

To me, it sounds too hard-edged for women. Indeed, almost everyone I work with is female, and I can't imagine any of them diggin' this station. My guess is they want to nab some of Jack's and KROQ's audience, both CBS, right? Guys buy stuff too.

I did hear 98.7 in the Culver City Togo's, though. So they are stickin' it to "the man" while they make those meatball sandwiches. (PS - The crew is all guys....)
