I just returned from a trip to Charleston and got to listen to a few station while in town and during my trip back home. I mostly listened to WXLY, I enjoyed the music also tuned in WJKB doing classic country. The music was great but the station was all on the bird when I was listening. Their web site has local jocks for the drive times, I didn't get to listen in the morning but the afternoon shift sounded like satellite as well as the other shows. For a 10 kw station they had a weak sound on the coast even with their very directional signal. They also need to work on their computer programming. Lots of dead air when they should have had a drop in or jingle. On the trip home I carried WXLY past Orangeburg and then switched to a classic country station @ 94.3 FM. The music was good and they were definately on the satellite.
The best sounding AM station technically was WTZQ in Hendersonville, NC at 1600 AM. I would love to see their processing chain. The timeless classic satellite programming was good. The next time I'm heading that way I will try to plan out a listening schedule for other stations.
