Low Gain Over-the-air

When I started here I noticed we were considerably lower than most local stations. This problem has continued and I would like to know what could cause it. We have a BE FM1C1 transmitter, FX50 exciter and the Orban 2200. No budget to buy new things (we are a high school station).

I am a non-enginering person and we dont have an engineer here everyday. If you have an idea on what to change, please let me know. We are a 'college rock' station and are in music/medium with a few minor changes on the Orban.

-Thanks!

> Is the studio and transmitter at the same site or do you use STL? don't know what city you're in but there must be a eng close by who can assist you and be very reasonable about it..could be the way the processor is set up, could be a stl problem with the signal, kinda hard to trouble shoot from a distance.how much modulation are you showing??

Check the input level in Orban. Select some regular factory preset. Check modulation level going into STL. Finally (most likely culprit) check modulation level in TX! It should read 100% (or 75kHz, depending on the labelling).

Somebody in the area should have a tunable mod monitor.

Talk nice and see if you can get him to set your modulation.

The metering on the exciter may or may not be accurate; if you have an STL or some other intervening system between the 2200 and the transmitter you may have some losses that need to be compensated for.
