Low Power AM in Wilson

Ever heard of Low Power AM?

Got to my website to read a review of the transmitter that I am using here in Wilson. I hope to have my new station fully programmed by the end of summer.

No.

That became painfully obvious 3 years ago when they purchased the stations. Everything went straight to hell after that.<P ID="signature">______________

Questions about your low-power stations

Hi Todd:

I checked out your site. I have always been fascinated with community radio, such as your stations. I see three stations mentioned on your site: A 70's station, a Christian FM station, and your new station (Radio 17). Are all three of these stations on-the-air? With the limitted signal, are you reaching enough of the population to garner up any listener response? I have been following the LPAM movement on the 'community radio' board and find some of the things some LPAM operators have been able to pull off! If your FM is still on-the-air...what kind of coverage are you getting from it? From all I have read about Part-15 broadcasters, there is more you can do to enhance your coverage with an LPAM as opposed to a Part-15 LPFM...I have heard of LEGAL part-15 AM's covering a couple to a few miles...where the FM's are lucky to get a 1/2 mile. Best of luck!

Re: Questions about your low-power stations

Thanks for checking out my site. You just made me acutely aware that I need to do a little housecleaning. I've been a lttle lax at updating it due to the time constraints of nursing school (one more year!).

So I'll clean up the site soon. But I'll try to answer your questions here...

Radio17 (AM 1700) is here for the long haul. I have yet to publicize it, but I will. The biggest reason for delaying the grand opening is onging vinyl to mp3 dubbing. Another big issue is paying BMI a yearly fee for the right to broadcast from their catalogue. As soon as I've finished dubbing about 300 more tunes and paid the royalties, I plan on printing stickers and publicizing the station to NW Wilson. In the meantime, Radio17 still broadcasts an eclectic mix of stuff. So check it out if you're here in Wilson.

Spin 1610, the 70's station, bought the farm soon after it debuted. But it is going to return this year as "Full Fidelity - Super 16" from another site here in Wilson. If WECU in Winterville doesn't actually make it to the air, Super 16 will be on AM 1570. This operation will not be using a Rangemaster, so it requires me to do a lot of coil/antenna construction. It also isn't my station anymore, so I can't tell you too much about it. But I can tell you that it will serve the "place where the people are".

Sadly, I just found out that my group's application for an LPFM was rejected last week. It had been in the works for over five years. We had planned a 'true public station' with a day-time AAA format, rocking' Christian music at night, free-form open-mic Saturdays, and all-religious Sundays (including Jews, Muslims, etc.) I would have loved to see the press that we would have gotten. But a downtown church won 106.9 due to their longer presence. My town is now plastered with translator apps that have priority over a local LPFM, so I was unble to move the construction permit to another frequency. Instead Wilson gets more out of town people begging for money, less localism, and more folks bolting for XM/Sirius. <rant over> Why can't someone put a translator here with something truly interesting on it? Like WNCW or WMIT?

Radio17 is all the unliscensed radio coming out of Wilson right now. We got a great signal. If response is good, who knows? I might just buy WGTM!
