Low Power DX

Someone mentioned George Schlom up the page. Wasn't he the guy who used to DX TIS stations?

W9wi,there was a 10 watter at a chemical plant Houston ship channel that got out all around the Gulf when it would test monthly. I believe it was on 1640?

There's are a couple of pirates on the east coast running on 1705 and 1710. The latter,Radio Mosiach, has been heard well into the midwest. It serves a Hasidic community in NYC. I have no idea of it's power but I've heard rumors of 60 watts. The other on 1705 serves a Haitian community in the Boston area. When it first showed up it was thought to be coming from Haiti by many Dx'ers because of it's all Creole programming. I'm in Kentucky and hear it fairly regularly.

I'm not a hard-core DXer with expensive receivers & huge antennas. I try to get the best from my portables, car & home stereo radios. That said, I was suprised to look at my Delavan, WI log & find that on the morning of Feb 6 of last year I recieved KUNI's 52-watt translator on 98.7 at a distance of 102 miles. I did it using a tiny Aiwa personal (Walkman-like) radio-only unit (model CR-LD101) about the size of a cigarette lighter. If I remember right, stations from Dubuque & the Quad Cities were wiping out Milwaukee, (which is about 45 miles away). I always keep the Aiwa with me just in case. The only thing that would make it better, would be a speaker.

My best FM catches are a 10 watt translator at 70 miles (10m above ground) and a 30 watt one at 90 miles (592m HAAT). My best regular catch is 160 watts at 130 miles (429m HAAT). they must be on the mountains west of me.

My best AM catches are WTCW, 43 watts, 340 miles (114m) and WVAB, 9 watts, 90 miles. No data listed for its antenna.

What's the furthest you got a station less than 100 watts (and less than 50 feet HAAT)?
I just received a 10 watt station from about 20 feet above ground level 25 miles away in the car.

Not sure about the HAAT, but last summer (August 22nd at 3:30 am) I had MPR's translator in Hinckley, MN, W293AV, running 55 watts and 60 miles. It was actually coming in quite well.
